Book San Anselmo

Download or read book San Anselmo written by Judy Coy and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: San Anselmo has been a crossroads if not a center of activity from the days when the Coast Miwok inhabited the valley and fished the fresh waters of the creek. Red Hill, a town landmark, was the meeting point of three 1840s Mexican land grants. The rancho days had come to an end by 1875, when the North Pacific Coast Railroad completed its line, with its tracks branching east and west at San Anselmo. Railroad officials encouraged real estate activity, but it was not until the San Francisco Theological Seminary was completed in 1892 that the town began to grow. Incorporation followed in 1907, after refugees from the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire built permanent homes. The population grew in the years following World War II, but San Anselmo has remained a small, family town.

Book Early San Rafael

    Book Details:
  • Author :
  • Publisher : Arcadia Publishing
  • Release : 2008
  • ISBN : 9780738559414
  • Pages : 132 pages

Download or read book Early San Rafael written by and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2008 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Coast Miwok and the early friars of Mission Dolores chose San Rafael both for its good weather and running streams, and the mission was named after the Archangel Raphael, the patron saint of bodily healing. When looking for a country estate, many wealthy San Franciscans sought the clean air and ideal weather here to escape the city's damp fog. San Rafael grew fast thereafter--it was the first city in Marin County to incorporate, the first to build a railroad, and the first to build a luxury hotel. San Rafael is the seat of county government, the center of commerce, and a cosmopolitan community in a natural setting. The dusty village of long ago was refined by fine schools and churches, the coming of the library, and by the ambitious efforts of the San Rafael Improvement Club. These early efforts made this a charming place to live, with Victorian homes, sylvan streets, and historic buildings in the business district. The pioneers would be pleased with the state of today's San Rafael.

Book excerpt: Burns and Hadfield are back ! When the horse of rancher Lyon Hamilton arrives at a neighboring ranch riderless, everyone fears the worst. Hamilton practically lives in the saddle, often surveying his family's huge tracts of land in the San Rafael Valley near Patagonia, Arizona astride his stallion. To unseat such a seasoned rider, something needed to go terribly wrong. When local law enforcement fail to find Hamilton or a believable reason for his disappearance, Hamilton's sister hires Jolene Hadfield, a retired police chief, to look into the mystery. Jolene and romantic partner, Andy Burns are soon on their way to the remote Hamilton family ranch, a spread that sits close to the Arizona-Mexico border. Unknown to Hadfield and Burns, FBI Agent Ron Kroll has also arrived in Arizona. Kroll is going deep undercover to infiltrate a criminal group suspected of smuggling narcotics and human trafficking from Mexico along the same remote section of borderland as the Hamilton's ranch. The smuggling group is headed by a disgraced ex-agent, so Kroll and the Bureau's interest in this case is more than professional—it's about settling the score with one of their own that has gone bad. Racial tensions, drugs, big money and dangerous rivalries converge in a covert war brewing in a remote section of American high desert, and it's about to boil over into something profoundly deadly. Hadfield and Burns quickly realize the rancher may have been the first of many casualties to come. Both gritty and realistic, this new novel from author/retired police officer Tom Ellis, is the action-packed followup to Biloxi Lights, featuring retired cops Andy Burns and Jolene Hadfield. About the Author: Tom Ellis is a retired police sergeant. As former contributing editor for Law Enforcement Technology Magazine he authored numerous articles on firearms, equipment, and training. He was a member of the Alabama Police High Power and Small Bore Rifle Teams, participating in the International Law Enforcement Games in Sydney Australia, Edmonton Alberta Canada, and Washington DC, USA.

Book The Daughters of Edward Darley Boit

Download or read book The Daughters of Edward Darley Boit written by Sara Loyster and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2021-08-31 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When fifteen-year-old Victoria grudgingly accompanies her mother to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, she has no idea her life is about to change forever. While there, she falls under the spell of the famous John Singer Sargent portrait The Daughters of Edward Darley Boit. Drawn into the portrait’s shadowy depths, Victoria finds herself transported back in time to the world of the four troubled Boit sisters. By the time she returns to her own world, Victoria understands that the sisters are in serious trouble and need her help. She dedicates herself to solving the mystery of their peculiar loneliness and isolation—only to discover that at the same time she is having an impact on the Boit sisters’ future, they are having an equally dramatic effect on her own. Spanning a brief period in the lives of John Singer Sargent and the Boit family, The Daughters of Edward Darley Boit is a coming-of-age tale that explores both the murky world of Paris in 1882 and the upheaval going on in Victoria’s own time, the early sixties, all the while pondering possible answers to the questions raised by Sargent’s most enigmatic work of art.
