Book Hydro Power

Download or read book Hydro Power written by Charles Simeons and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-04-24 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydro-Power: The Use of Water as an Alternative Source of Energy deals with the use of water as an alternative source of energy. The principles of the technology involved in the extraction of energy from water for use in some other form are discussed, and some of the projects that are being undertaken in a number of countries are described. Comprised of 12 chapters, this book begins with an overview of global energy consumption and projections for energy demand, along with electricity generation using hydraulic resources and developments in the use of hydroelectric power. The next chapter focuses on the principle of wave power as an energy source, with emphasis on how power can be derived from the slow oscillation of the waves; the economics of wave power; structural design of wave energy converters; and mooring considerations. Subsequent chapters explore national wave power programs in countries such as the United Kingdom, Japan, South Africa, Egypt, Mauritius, Norway, Sweden, and the United States; tidal power and hydrogen; and energy storage and hydroelectric schemes in Europe. The final chapter assesses the environmental impact of hydroelectric power. This monograph will be a useful resource for experts and policymakers in the field of energy as well as those with little knowledge of the potential contribution that water can make to the world's energy needs.

Book Australia s Water Resources

Download or read book Australia s Water Resources written by John Pigram and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2007-05-25 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australia’s Water Resources seeks to explore the circumstances underpinning the profound reorientation of attitudes and relationships to water that has taken place in Australia in recent decades. The changing emphasis from development to management of water resources continues to evolve and is reflected in a series of public policy initiatives directed towards rational, efficient and sustainable use of the nation's water. Australia is now recognised as a pacesetter in water reform. Administrative restructuring, water pricing, water markets and trade, integrated water resources management, and the emergence of the private sector, are features of a more economically sound and environmentally compatible water industry. It is important that these changes are documented and their rationale and effectiveness explained. This timely work provides an important synthesis of these issues. This revised paperback edition is a fully corrected reprint of the hardback edition.

Book What s Changing Population Size Or Land use Patterns

Download or read book What s Changing Population Size Or Land use Patterns written by Val Attenbrow and published by ANU E Press. This book was released on 2007-02-01 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Upper Mangrove Creek catchment was an ideal locality in which to undertake field investigation into Aboriginal use of the coastal hinterland. The area, 101 square kilometres in size, is rich in sites that provided significant archaeological evidence of Aboriginal use of the coastal hinterland. The catchment became the focus of major archaeological salvage work in the late 1970s, prior to the construction of the Mangrove Creek Dam. Further research, undertaken by Val Attenbrow, on the total catchment expanded upon the results of earlier work. This monograph describes the later research project and summarises the salvage program results. This evidence is used by the author to explore current research issues relating to the interpretation of the mid- to late-Holocene archaeological record in Australia, particularly quantitative changes relating to population numbers and aspects of human behaviour, such as risk management, subsistence, mobility and land-use patterns.

Download or read book Cities written by Ian Douglas and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2013-05-30 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cities are amongst our greatest creations. Yet, with cities now home to over half the world's population, there is increasing concern over their unchecked expansion and the detrimental effect this is having on the planet. This unfettered growth is affecting every ecosystem on Earth, from the deepest oceans to the highest mountains, as induced climate change and ever increasing demands upon the world's resources take effect. As the pace of urbanisation quickens, how can we make the world's cities more sustainable? Ian Douglas tells the story of cities. He shows why they exist, how they have evolved and the problems they have encountered, revealing how from the very beginning environmental management played a key role in urban life. He addresses specific problems, such as noise and air pollution, water supply and waste management, as well as the vulnerability of cities to hazards such as earthquakes and flooding. And he considers strategies to make cities more sustainable and help them adapt to climate change, such as waste recycling, energy conservation, dual water systems, sustainable housing, as well as initiatives to retrofit existing cities. Written by an acknowledged international authority, this unique volume will be welcomed by students and specialists in environment, planning, geography, ecology and the built environment.
