Book excerpt: Welcome Home Again this Christmas: A delightful romantic comedy set against the magical backdrop of Christmas in the Scottish Highlands, from CP Ward, author of Autumn in Sycamore Park, I’m Glad I Found You This Christmas, and Christmas at the Marshmallow Café. When Brentwell Public Library closes over Christmas for renovations, young librarian Lizzie Cotton finds herself unexpectedly unemployed. With a credit card bill to pay, she finds herself googling for a Christmas miracle, and it comes in the form of a little secondhand bookshop desperately seeking a new manager. There’s only one problem. It’s in Scotland, at the other end of the country, in a little village that Lizzie can’t even locate on a map. A little village called Hollydell … With her chinchilla Albert in tow, Lizzie sets off for what she hopes will be a nice steady income over the Christmas season. What she’s not expecting is an adventure, one with large helpings of Christmas pudding, copious mince pieces, lashings of humour, and maybe even a little dash of romance … CP Ward’s fans have long awaited a return to Hollydell, the delightful Christmas village in the Scottish Highlands first visited in I’m Glad I Found You This Christmas. Now, their Christmas wish is about to come true.

Book excerpt: Reaching the lost, straying and cast down sheep of our generation - For such a time as this. Read how it's done. The author shares real life experiences from victim to overcomer. And the good news is: You can too. In a compelling true story the author tells how, as a child she worked all day in fields of sticky tobacco plants and prickly cotton bolls; and how cleansing it was at the end of the day to take the path less traveled back to the farmhouse. It was the path less traveled, which led to a refreshing pool of cool spring water where she could wash away all the dust and grime of the fields. She compares this to the experience when as a "cast down" sheep she came back to "The Father," who with outstretched arms of love offered Rivers of Mercy through Acceptance, Forgiveness and Restoration. Starwitness is a Central Florida Native, and a survivor of The Great Depression. During World War II, she worked on the Manhattan Project, employed by Tennessee Eastman Corporation in Oak Ridge Tennessee. Starwitness is a Retiree of the State of Florida where she worked as Nursing Home Coordinator with a team of Doctors, Nurses and Social Workers. After Retirement, she authored "The Viet Nam Hero" which was used in the Honors Program in Valencia Community College. She also authored "AS IS," A True Story of Hope. Now comes her latest release: "WELCOME HOME" - " As Is" She and her husband live in Central Florida and are the proud parents of two outstanding daughters, Patricia Stenstrom Agnew and Sharon Sue Barker, as well as four great grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Book excerpt: Aunt Angela knelt by the boys' bedside and bowed her head into the comfort of the blankets. "Oh, good and holy Saint Nicholas," she intoned, "you who bring joy to children, and plenty of presents too. It's me again, Angela Cavallo. Look, I know you're busy tonight, but put in my heart the spirit of childhood about which the Gospel speaks. Teach me how to sow happiness around me. Teach Little Dick never ever to touch women again. Teach The Turd to be nice to others, and teach Baby Michael to stop stealing stuff. Even if you must punish each of them with horrible afflictions, that's okay, we'll understand. Amen." "Amen," the boys chimed in together, hoping that tonight, Christmas Eve, would not be the night they broke out with some weird infection. When this mafioso family reunites for a Christmas celebration, things get wacky quickly as headstrong Silvio Cavallo and his unforgettable gay twin brothers become involved in a hilarious hit job gone wrong. Italian Holiday is a comical caper of Italian bluster, dysfunctional family dynamics, and an outlandish tale complete with wine, weapons, and wisecracks. For at least one family, turmoil rather than the serenity of a Norman Rockwell painting may be the real Christmas tradition.

Book Welcome Home

Download or read book Welcome Home written by Lita Linzer Schwartz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-08 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examine the pros and cons of nontraditional adoption! Welcome Home! An International and Nontraditional Adoption Reader is an essential guide to the process, pros, and cons of adopting children from outside the United States, with special needs, and/or from a different racial/cultural background. The book documents every aspect of the adoption procedure—from working with “facilitators,” adoption agencies, and attorneys to mixed reactions over a child’s possible loss of heritage as the result of a transracial or multicultural adoption. Parents and adoptees offer unique, firsthand perspectives on the cautions and benefits of nontraditional adoption. Americans adopted more than 20,000 children from other countries in 2001, a number that reflects humanitarian motives, the desire to adopt a child from a specific country, and/or frustration with the domestic adoption system. Including a foreword by United States Representative Ted Strickland, Welcome Home! is a practical resource for anyone thinking of establishing a family or adding to their own. The book provides insight into the adoption process, open adoption, biracial adoption, adopting a special needs child, cultural attitudes, and how to handle an adopted child’s questions in later years. It also addresses specific adoption issues, including: how to verify an agency’s credentials; how an agency negotiates with the birth mother; state and country laws and practices; tax benefits; and expenses, including legal and medical costs; and includes research findings on the Northeast-Northwest Collaborative Adoption Projects (N2CAP) Welcome Home! tells the stories of: Naomi and Fred, an intermarried couple (she’s Jewish, he’s not) who adopted a Greek baby in 1962 “Tina” and “Lee,” a lesbian couple, who adopted a baby from China Marianne, a professor of child and adolescent psychiatry at the University of Lund in Sweden, who adopted babies from Iran and Thailand—several years after her divorce Pamela, a divorced mother of four biological children who has adopted babies from Viet Nam and China All of her biological children Mildred—Pamela’s mother and the children’s grandmother Karen, adoptive mother and national chairperson for Families for Russian and Ukrainian adoption (FRUA) William, adoptive father of miracle sisters from Romania and many more! Welcome Home! is an invaluable source of unusual insight for psychologists, psychiatrists, marriage and family therapists, adoption agencies, counselors, social workers, attorneys, physicians, academics, and, of course, anyone considering adoption.

As we interact with the people we meet, their influences on our lives shape the way we grow and how we present ourselves to the world. The people in these poems lived, and died, with their own Traveling Shows as they tried to reach for rainbows. Some never did finish that journey. Through their eyes, I wrote about their travels through life. Through my eyes, they became my own travels.

Book Re Membering and Surviving

Download or read book Re Membering and Surviving written by Shirley A. James Hanshaw and published by MSU Press. This book was released on 2020-10-01 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book-length critical study of the black experience in the Vietnam War and its aftermath, this text interrogates the meaning of heroism based on models from African and African American expressive culture. It focuses on four novels: Captain Blackman (1972) by John A. Williams, Tragic Magic (1978) by Wesley Brown, Coming Home (1971) by George Davis, and De Mojo Blues (1985) by A. R. Flowers. Discussions of the novels are framed within the historical context of all wars prior to Vietnam in which Black Americans fought. The success or failure of the hero on his identity quest is predicated upon the extent to which he can reconnect with African or African American cultural memory. He is engaged therefore in “re-membering,” a term laden with the specificity of race that implies a cultural history comprised of African retentions and an interdependent relationship with the community for survival. The reader will find that a common history of racism and exploitation that African Americans and Vietnamese share sometimes results in the hero’s empathy with and compassion for the so-called enemy, a unique contribution of the black novelist to American war literature.
