Book Sylvius Leopold Weiss Three Late Sonatas for Classical Guitar

Download or read book Sylvius Leopold Weiss Three Late Sonatas for Classical Guitar written by Allen Krantz and published by Mel Bay Publications. This book was released on 2021-04-23 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Silvius Leopold Weiss (1687 – 1750) is known to guitarists as the greatest baroque composer for the lute, yet most are only familiar with the earlier portion of Weiss’s prolific output found in the British Library in London. Inspired by a forty-year friendship with the late Douglas Alton Smith - a major figure in the scholarly study of the history of the lute - guitarist, composer, and head of the guitar program at Temple University in Philadelphia, Allen Krantz explored the Weiss manuscripts found in other European cities, particularly the Dresden editions which contain the fifteen sonatas that Weiss produced from the late 1730s to the end of his life. Transcriptions of three of those fifteen late sonatas are featured in this book in modern standard notation along with the original lute tablature as found in the Sächsische Landesbibliothek - Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek, Dresden. While the baroque lute’s tuning makes some works awkward or impossible on the guitar, the three works presented here—Sonatas No. 35 in D minor, No. 42 in A minor and No. 45 in A Major— are in their original keys which happen to be guitar-friendly. The author’s generous and scholarly “Preface” provides thorough historical and performance notes for the music in this volume. While just three of Weiss’s 109 multi-movement lute sonatas are represented here, the importance of this publication cannot be overstated. It contains some of the greatest music of a masterful lutenist— Weiss once faced-off with J. S. Bach on keyboards in a counterpoint improvisation contest—now made accessible to the modern classical guitarist.

Book Handbook of Guitar and Lute Composers

Download or read book Handbook of Guitar and Lute Composers written by Hannu Annala and published by Mel Bay Publications. This book was released on 2010-10-07 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In compiling this landmark sourcebook, Finnish guitarists Hannu Annala and Heiki Matlik consulted more than 70 music texts as well as dozens of composer resumes acquired from the musical information centers of several countries. During the writing process, which lasted for more than three years, they received additional information from many modern composers, including Leo Brouwer and Reginald Smith Brindle among others. In addition, several internationally renowned performing guitarists provided valuable information; these include Magnus Andersson (Sweden), Remi Boucher (Canada), Margarita Escarpa (Spain), Aleksander Frauchi (Russia) and David Tanenbaum (USA) among others. The authors' aim was to write a well-structured book with separate chapters for each instrument, such as the Renaissance and Baroque guitar, the Renaissance and Baroque lute, the vihuela, etc. This unique structure enables the reader to easily discover which composers wrote for a certain instrument during any given period. In addition to the composers one would expect to find in such a comprehensive listing, the book documents several historical and modern composers for whom little previous information has been available. the book's list of more than 400 guitar and lute concertos dating from the Baroque era to the present day is a totally unprecedented.Short introductions regarding guitar and lute-like instruments as well as their basic histories are provided at the beginning of the book. the authors hope that the Handbook of Guitar and Lute Composers will serve as a practical guide for both amateurs and professionals, encouraging further study of the history of these instruments and expanding the repertoire heard on today's concert stage.
