Book Weird Tales Magazine No 368

Download or read book Weird Tales Magazine No 368 written by Jonathan Maberry and published by Blackstone Publishing. This book was released on 2024-04-30 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Weird Tales magazine is known for launching a number of sub-genres of fiction—cosmic horror, swords & sorcery, dark fantasy, and others. It has also greatly added to existing genres like science fiction, horror, and—a personal favorite of editor Jonathan Maberry—weird mystery stories. Or, as they became known—occult detective tales. Here are all-original tales about people who peer into the shadows in order to solve a mystery. Sometimes successfully ... and sometimes the darkness wins. The stories range from nail-biting horror to very dark comedy, and there’s a generous mix of short stories, flash fiction (shorter works of about 1500 words), and poems. The lineup is killer, as you’ll discover, and the interpretations of what constitutes “occult fiction” is unique to each writer. “The Eyrie” by Jonathan Maberry“Dead Jack and the Mystery of Room 216” by James Aquilone“Beneath the Scarred Pulpit” by Kenneth W. Book excerpt: "Some stories are more explicitly Lovecraftian than others, but all demonstrate how Lovecraft's dark mythology continues to inspire outstanding tales of modern horror." - Publisher's Weekly Many of the best weird fiction writers (and creators in most other media) have been profoundly influenced by the genre and the mythos H.P. Lovecraft created eight decades ago. Lovecraft's themes of cosmic indifference, minds invaded by the alien, and the horrors of history - written with a pervasive atmosphere of unexplainable dread - are more relevant than ever as we explore the mysteries of a universe in which our planet is infinitesimal and climatic change is overwhelming it. A few years ago, New Cthulhu: The Recent Weird presented some of the best of this new Lovecraftian fiction from the first decade of the twenty-first century. Now, New Cthulhu 2: More Recent Weird brings you more eldritch tales and even fresher fiction inspired by Lovecraft.

Book The Call of Cthulhu and at the Mountains of Madness

Download or read book The Call of Cthulhu and at the Mountains of Madness written by H. P. Lovecraft and published by . This book was released on 2021-01-31 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This single-volume edition features a pair of H. P. Lovecraft's best and most popular tales of horror and fantasy. Originally published by Weird Tales magazine in 1928, "The Call of Cthulhu" recounts the discovery of a mysterious box among the personal effects of a recently deceased archaeologist. The box's contents--a disturbing bas-relief sculpture and manuscripts hinting at forbidden knowledge--offer sinister clues about a secret cult and its attempts to resurrect an ancient monster that will envelop the planet in chaos. "At the Mountains of Madness," serialized in 1936 in Astounding Stories magazine, traces a disastrous expedition to the Antarctic that uncovers an abandoned city haunted by an unnamed evil. Both stories contributed to the formation of the Cthulhu Mythos, the framework for a shared universe that has inspired countless writers, musicians, readers, and visual artists. These enormously influential tales are must-reads for all fans of speculative fiction.

Book Arkham House Books

Download or read book Arkham House Books written by Leon Nielsen and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-02-18 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reference work covers the supernatural and speculative fiction published by Arkham House Publishers, Inc., of Sauk City, Wisconsin. In 1937, promising Wisconsin writer August Derleth decided to publish a collection of the stories of his recently deceased friend, H. P. Lovecraft. After two years of failed attempts, Derleth and another Lovecraft fan, Donald Wandrei, published the collection themselves under the name of Arkham. In the years that followed, Arkham House published the works of many of the foremost American and British writers of weird fiction, including Basil Copper, Lord Dunsany, Robert E. Howard, and Robert Bloch. Arkham published Ray Bradbury's first book, Dark Carnival, in 1947. The work begins with a history of the house and biography of August Derleth; it also includes a chapter on H. P. Lovecraft's connection to Arkham. The main body of the text consists of chronologically listed descriptions and current values of the more than 230 titles published by Arkham House and its two imprints, Mycroft & Moran and Stanton & Lee. These entries detail editions, reprints, special points, restoration, care, buying and selling, investment, and future trends. Other features include alphabetical indeces of titles and authors, lists of scarcity and value ranking, a list of annual stock lists and catalogs, and a bibliography of reference literature. The book is illustrated throughout with dust jacket reproductions and photographs.
