MlmlBMMMSIm Swmip jINTRODUCTORY. f1- IIIX two brief generations tt wild waste of unbroken wilderness lias been transformed into a cultivated rep, gion of thrift and prosSfife. perity, by the untiring zeal and energy of an enterprising people. The trails of hunters and trappers have given plaee to rai roads and thoroughfares for vehicles of every description; the cabins ami garden patches of the pioneers have been succeeded by comfortable houses and broad fields of waving grain, with school-houses, churches, mills. os?oftices and other institutions of convenience for each community. Add to these the prosperous city of Greencastle, and numerous thriving villages, with extensive business and manufacturing interests, and the result is a work of which all concerned may well be proud. The record of this marvelous change is history, and the most important that can be written. For sixty five years the people of Putnam County have been making a history that for thrilling interest, grand practical results, and lessons that may be perused with profit by citizens of other regions, will compare favorably with the narrative of the history of any county in the Xorthwest; and.; considering the extent of territory involved, i it. is as worthy of the pen of a Bancroft, as! even the story of our glorious Republic.; While our venerable mice-tors may have said i and believed No pent up 1 iir.a contracts our powers, For thp whole boundless continent is ours, 1 jthey were nevertheless for a long time con Itent. toccupy and possess a very small cor Iner of it; and the great West was not opened! to industry and civilization until a variety of causes had combined to form, as it were, a jgreat heart, whose animating principle was i improvement, whose impulses annually sent jwestward armies of noble men and women. jand whose pulse is now felt throughout the i length and breadth of the best country the sun ever shone upon from the pineries of Maine to the vineyards of California, mi! jfrom the sugar-canes of Louisiana to the i jwheat, fields of Minnesota. Download or read book History of Putnam County New York written by William Smith Pelletreau and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-24 with total page 1010 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Putnam County, New York: With Biographical Sketches of Its Prominent Men N the summer of 1885, the writer of this work was called from his home, at Southampton, L. I., to undertake the task of preparing a History of Putnam County, for the Publishers, W. W. And L. E. Preston. Upon arriving at the scene of his labors, the grandeur of the mountain scenery impressed his mind, with the contrast, so great, between the High Hills of the Highlands and the ocean shore, which had been within his View from earliest childhood. 'a more extended acquaint ance began to demonstrate, not only the difference in physi cal, but in historical matters, and he found increasing interest in searching for the sources of information upon which the historian must rely. The little knowledge that is left of that aboriginal race whose origin is unknown and whose end is oblivion; the coming of another race, and their conquest of the soil; the settlements they made and the towns they founded; with the endless diversity found in family history, and the change of events in political affairs; the history of that family, who were once lords and owners of all the land around; the banishment and the death in a foreign land of some of their number; all these soon became the subjects of search after knowledge, which became the more fascinat ing from its being laborious. If the author has succeeded in throwing any light upon the darkness which hides the past; it he has recorded information which otherwise would have been lost, and if the researches he has made shall ln duce others to follow the path he has marked out, he will feel that his labors have not been in vain. It only remains to express our sincere thanks for the valu able assistance received from those who have sympathized with the work, and especially to John De wvitt W'arner, Esq. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Putnam County, N. Y: With an Enumeration of Its Towns, Villages, Rivers, Creeks, Lakes, Ponds, Mountains, Hills, and Geological Features; Local Traditions; And Short Biographical Sketches of Early Settlers, Etc WE hardly know what excuse to Offer the reader, for daring to introduce our little work into his literary presence, and lay his time under an embargo for its perusal. We have not written for fame or profit. Had we done either, or both, we would have selected a different subject than the history of a little County like that of Putnam. What we have written is the result of leisure hours, which might possibly have been squandered in the pursuit Of a less worthy Object, pro ductive Of no benefit to self or community. If we have garnered up one fact that was in danger of being lost, and which is beneficial and worthy to be pre served, in a historical point Of view, we are satisfied and rewarded for our labor. That our little work is defective, no one is more thoroughly satisfied, and ready to admit it also, than our humble self. Our sources of information have been narrow and limited, and in many instances defective. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
