Book Energy Methods in Continuum Mechanics

Download or read book Energy Methods in Continuum Mechanics written by S.N. Antontsev and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the Workshop Energy Methods for Free Boundary Problems in Continuum Mechanics, held in Oviedo, Spain, from March 21 to March 23, 1994. It is well known that the conservation laws and the constitutive equations of Continuum Mechanics lead to complicated coupled systems of partial differential equations to which, as a rule, one fails to apply the techniques usually employed in the studies of scalar uncoupled equations such as, for instance, the maximum principle. The study of the qualitative behaviour of solutions of the systems re quires different techniques, among others, the so called, Energy Methods where the properties of some integral of a nonnegative function of one or several unknowns allow one to arrive at important conclusions on the envolved unknowns. This vol ume presents the state of the art in such a technique. A special attention is paid to the class of Free Boundary Problems. The organizers are pleased to thank the European Science Foundation (Pro gram on Mathematical treatment of free boundary problems), the DGICYT (Spain), the FICYT (Principado de Asturias, Spain) and the Universities of Oviedo and Complutense de Madrid for their generous financial support. Finally, we wish to thank Kluwer Academic Publishers for the facilities received for the publication of these Proceedings.

Book Mathematical Theory in Fluid Mechanics

Download or read book Mathematical Theory in Fluid Mechanics written by G P Galdi and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1996-08-01 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume consists of four contributions that are based on a series of lectures delivered by Jens Frehse. Konstantin Pikeckas, K.R. Rajagopal and Wolf von Wahl t the Fourth Winter School in Mathematical Theory in Fluid Mechanics, held in Paseky, Czech Republic, from December 3-9, 1995. In these papers the authors present the latest research and updated surveys of relevant topics in the various areas of theoretical fluid mechanics. Specifically, Frehse and Ruzicka study the question of the existence of a regular solution to Navier-Stokes equations in five dimensions by means of weighted estimates. Pileckas surveys recent results regarding the solvability of the Stokes and Navier-Stokes system in domains with outlets at infinity. K.R. Rajagopal presents an introduction to a continuum approach to mixture theory with the emphasis on the constitutive equation, boundary conditions and moving singular surface. Finally, Kaiser and von Wahl bring new results on stability of basic flow for the Taylor-Couette problem in the small-gap limit. This volume would be indicated for those in the fields of applied mathematicians, researchers in fluid mechanics and theoretical mechanics, and mechanical engineers.

Book Energy Methods for Free Boundary Problems

Download or read book Energy Methods for Free Boundary Problems written by S.N. Antontsev and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the past several decades, the study of free boundary problems has been a very active subject of research occurring in a variety of applied sciences. What these problems have in common is their formulation in terms of suitably posed initial and boundary value problems for nonlinear partial differential equations. Such problems arise, for example, in the mathematical treatment of the processes of heat conduction, filtration through porous media, flows of non-Newtonian fluids, boundary layers, chemical reactions, semiconductors, and so on. The growing interest in these problems is reflected by the series of meetings held under the title "Free Boundary Problems: Theory and Applications" (Ox ford 1974, Pavia 1979, Durham 1978, Montecatini 1981, Maubuisson 1984, Irsee 1987, Montreal 1990, Toledo 1993, Zakopane 1995, Crete 1997, Chiba 1999). From the proceedings of these meetings, we can learn about the different kinds of mathematical areas that fall within the scope of free boundary problems. It is worth mentioning that the European Science Foundation supported a vast research project on free boundary problems from 1993 until 1999. The recent creation of the specialized journal Interfaces and Free Boundaries: Modeling, Analysis and Computation gives us an idea of the vitality of the subject and its present state of development. This book is a result of collaboration among the authors over the last 15 years.

Book The Connection between Infinite Dimensional and Finite Dimensional Dynamical Systems

Download or read book The Connection between Infinite Dimensional and Finite Dimensional Dynamical Systems written by Basil Nicolaenko and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1989 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last few years have seen a number of major developments demonstrating that the long-term behavior of solutions of a very large class of partial differential equations possesses a striking resemblance to the behavior of solutions of finite dimensional dynamical systems, or ordinary differential equations. The first of these advances was the discovery that a dissipative PDE has a compact, global attractor with finite Hausdorff and fractal dimensions. More recently, it was shown that some of these PDEs possess a finite dimensional inertial manifold-that is, an invariant manifold containing the attractor and exponentially attractive trajectories. With the improved understanding of the exact connection between finite dimensional dynamical systems and various classes of dissipative PDEs, it is now realistic to hope that the wealth of studies of such topics as bifurcations of finite vector fields and ``strange'' fractal attractors can be brought to bear on various mathematical models, including continuum flows. Surprisingly, a number of distributed systems from continuum mechanics have been found to exhibit the same nontrivial dynamic behavior as observed in low-dimensional dynamical systems. As a natural consequence of these observations, a new direction of research has arisen: detection and analysis of finite dimensional dynamical characteristics of infinite-dimensional systems. This book represents the proceedings of an AMS-IMS-SIAM Summer Research Conference, held in July, 1987 at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Bringing together mathematicians and physicists, the conference provided a forum for presentations on the latest developments in the field and fostered lively interactions on open questions and future directions. With contributions from some of the top experts, these proceedings will provide readers with an overview of this vital area of research.

Book An Introduction to the Mathematical Theory of the Navier Stokes Equations

Download or read book An Introduction to the Mathematical Theory of the Navier Stokes Equations written by G.P. Galdi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1994-04-28 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The volumes deal with the fundamental mathematical properties of the Navier-Stokes equations, such as existence, regularity and uniqueness of solutions, and, for unbounded domains, their asymptotic behavior. The work is an up-to-date and detailed investigation of these problems for motions in domains of different types: bounded, exterior and domain with noncompact boundaries. Throughout the work, main problems which, so far, remain open are pointed out and for some of these conjectures are offered. New results are presented throughout, while several classical subjects are treated in a completely original way."--Google Book Search.
