Book Exploring some uses for instrumental variable calibration weighting

Download or read book Exploring some uses for instrumental variable calibration weighting written by Phillip S. Kott and published by RTI Press. This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The WTADJX procedure incorporated into the 2012 release of SUDAAN 11® does instrumental-variable calibration weighting using a flexible nonlinear weight-adjustment function. We review the theory behind this procedure and discuss two potential uses. The first tends to reduce mean squared errors in the absence of unit nonresponse or coverage errors. The second adjusts for unit nonresponse when the variables governing the response mechanism differ from the variables used to calibrate the weights. This occurs either because the survey variables of interest cannot be roughly modeled as a linear function of the response-model variables or because the values of the response-model variables are known only for the respondents.

Book Predictive Variables for Weight Change Two Years Following Participation in a Weight Loss Intervention Program

Download or read book Predictive Variables for Weight Change Two Years Following Participation in a Weight Loss Intervention Program written by Margaret Angela Lavery and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A historical prospective study was designed to assess the man weight status of subjects who participated in a behavioral weight reduction program in 1983 and to determine whether there was an association between the dependent variable weight change and any of 31 independent variables after a 2 year follow-up period. Data was obtained by abstracting the subjects records and from a follow-up questionnaire administered 2 years following program participation. Five hundred nine subjects (386 females and 123 males) of 1460 subjects who participated in the program, completed and returned the questionnaire. Results showed that mean weight was significantly different (p

Book Encyclopedia of Survey Research Methods

Download or read book Encyclopedia of Survey Research Methods written by Paul J. Lavrakas and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 2008-09-12 with total page 1073 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To the uninformed, surveys appear to be an easy type of research to design and conduct, but when students and professionals delve deeper, they encounter the vast complexities that the range and practice of survey methods present. To complicate matters, technology has rapidly affected the way surveys can be conducted; today, surveys are conducted via cell phone, the Internet, email, interactive voice response, and other technology-based modes. Thus, students, researchers, and professionals need both a comprehensive understanding of these complexities and a revised set of tools to meet the challenges. In conjunction with top survey researchers around the world and with Nielsen Media Research serving as the corporate sponsor, the Encyclopedia of Survey Research Methods presents state-of-the-art information and methodological examples from the field of survey research. Although there are other "how-to" guides and references texts on survey research, none is as comprehensive as this Encyclopedia, and none presents the material in such a focused and approachable manner. With more than 600 entries, this resource uses a Total Survey Error perspective that considers all aspects of possible survey error from a cost-benefit standpoint. Key Features Covers all major facets of survey research methodology, from selecting the sample design and the sampling frame, designing and pretesting the questionnaire, data collection, and data coding, to the thorny issues surrounding diminishing response rates, confidentiality, privacy, informed consent and other ethical issues, data weighting, and data analyses Presents a Reader′s Guide to organize entries around themes or specific topics and easily guide users to areas of interest Offers cross-referenced terms, a brief listing of Further Readings, and stable Web site URLs following most entries The Encyclopedia of Survey Research Methods is specifically written to appeal to beginning, intermediate, and advanced students, practitioners, researchers, consultants, and consumers of survey-based information.

Book Predictor Variables of Successful Weight Loss

Download or read book Predictor Variables of Successful Weight Loss written by John L. Peggau and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Being able to predict who will be successful in a particular health promoting or wellness program has long been a difficult task. This study, in a post hoc analysis, looked at the weight loss data of 176 overweight men and women who entered a weight loss program . It combined these data with their pre-treatment questionnaires to determine if the subjects' description of outcome goals was statistically significant in separating those who had lost 12% or more of their beginning body weight from those who had lost less or who had gained weight. It found that those subjects who had described outcomes in terms that included increased physical activity; increased exercise; or changed lifestyle were four times more likely to lose 12% or more of their beginning body weight than those who had used other descriptors, when matched for age, race, sex, and beginning body-mass-index. These results are significant at the .001 level, suggesting that subjects who report goals of increased physical activity, exercise, or a changed lifestyle experience program-intrinsic reinforcement, leading these subjects to greater weight loss.

Book Robust High dimensional Data Analysis Using a Weight Shrinkage Rule

Download or read book Robust High dimensional Data Analysis Using a Weight Shrinkage Rule written by Bin Luo and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In high-dimensional settings, a penalized least squares approach may lose its efficiency in both estimation and variable selection due to the existence of either outliers or heteroscedasticity. In this thesis, we propose a novel approach to perform robust high-dimensional data analysis in a penalized weighted least square framework. The main idea is to relate the irregularity of each observation to a weight vector and obtain the outlying status data-adaptively using a weight shrinkage rule. By usage of L-1 type regularization on both the coefficients and weight vectors, the proposed method is able to perform simultaneous variable selection and outliers detection efficiently. Eventually, this procedure results in estimators with potentially strong robustness and non-asymptotic consistency. We provide a unified link between the weight shrinkage rule and a robust M-estimation in general settings. We also establish the non-asymptotic oracle inequalities for the joint estimation of both the regression coefficients and weight vectors. These theoretical results allow the number of variables to far exceed the sample size. The performance of the proposed estimator is demonstrated in both simulation studies and real examples."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.

Book Practical Tools for Designing and Weighting Survey Samples

Download or read book Practical Tools for Designing and Weighting Survey Samples written by Richard Valliant and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-05-16 with total page 678 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Survey sampling is fundamentally an applied field. The goal in this book is to put an array of tools at the fingertips of practitioners by explaining approaches long used by survey statisticians, illustrating how existing software can be used to solve survey problems, and developing some specialized software where needed. This book serves at least three audiences: (1) Students seeking a more in-depth understanding of applied sampling either through a second semester-long course or by way of a supplementary reference; (2) Survey statisticians searching for practical guidance on how to apply concepts learned in theoretical or applied sampling courses; and (3) Social scientists and other survey practitioners who desire insight into the statistical thinking and steps taken to design, select, and weight random survey samples. Several survey data sets are used to illustrate how to design samples, to make estimates from complex surveys for use in optimizing the sample allocation, and to calculate weights. Realistic survey projects are used to demonstrate the challenges and provide a context for the solutions. The book covers several topics that either are not included or are dealt with in a limited way in other texts. These areas include: sample size computations for multistage designs; power calculations related to surveys; mathematical programming for sample allocation in a multi-criteria optimization setting; nuts and bolts of area probability sampling; multiphase designs; quality control of survey operations; and statistical software for survey sampling and estimation. An associated R package, PracTools, contains a number of specialized functions for sample size and other calculations. The data sets used in the book are also available in PracTools, so that the reader may replicate the examples or perform further analyses.
