There was a light shower accompanied by a smattering of hail on the afternoon of May 27. Since then it has been fairly windy and hot most of the time, so that soil moisture has been dissipated rather rapidly, and where wet soil has been turned up it has baked hard. Rain has threatened nearly every day. The sorghums were planted May 29. The soil was in ideal condition. On the surface planted plots the seed seems to be germinating, but on the listed plots the soil has dried out in the seed bed in many places and the seed is in dry ground, unsprouted. The corn has been thinned and the alleys cultivated. Some of the Spring small grains are beginning to head. They are still very short. Wind velocity, especially during the first half of the month was somewhat excessive. Velocities of and miles per hour on the 14th and 15th, respectively, caused considerable drifting of snow which before that date was 7 to 9 inches deep. Snow on the ground at the end of the month averaged only about one inch, Chinook winds of the past ten days removing most of the cover. Precipitation amounting to 13 inch brought the annual total to inches, making 1931 the fourth consecutive year with below normal rainfall. Winter feeding experiments with cattle and hogs are fully under way after the renewal of the flow in Beaver Creek, which up until two weeks ago had failed to supply water for some of the cattle lots.
