Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Puncture Vine in California Among the various weeds that are contributing to agricultural losses, in California, the puncture vine has rapidly become one of the most harmful. In certain counties it is causing enormous losses, and rendering almost worthless large acreages of valuable land. More over, it is spreading, the agencies responsible for its dissemination being many and difficult to control. But, the important point is that it can be prevented from spreading itself generally over the state if proper measures are followed. This bulletin 'is a genuine contribution to the knowledge of the life history and habits of puncture vine and of practical methods for its control. It will be welcomed by those growers who now have infesta tions of the weed, and also by those who wish the information which will enable them to recognize the plant and to stamp out incipient infestations effectively. Book Tests of Chemical Means for the Control of Weeds

Download or read book Tests of Chemical Means for the Control of Weeds written by George Putnam Gray and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-11 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tests of Chemical Means for the Control of Weeds: Report of Progress These conditions constitute a very serious menace to the agriculture of the state and were fully discussed at a meeting of the county horti cultural commissioners of California held at I Stanford University, July 26, 1915. The use of chemicals was frequently mentioned as a possible solution of the weed problem, butthe fact was brought out that very little information is available concerning their usefulness under California conditions. Following this meeting, Mr. William Wood, Los Angeles County Horticultural Commissioner, took up with the director of the agricultural experiment station at Berkeley the mat ter of an investigation of -methods of weed control by means of chemicals. It was suggested that a judicious use of chemicals might solve the problem of the control of those weeds which too often survive and increase in spite of expensive mechanical control measures. The suggested investigation was undertaken by the station in the fall of 1915, and the writer was assigned-to the Work. A review of the literature discloses the fact that the use of chemicals has simplified to some extent the solution of the problem of weed control on both agricultural and non-agricultural land in localities other than In one case at least, the use of chemicals for the destruction of weeds has become a common practice.9 Some of the experiments have demonstrated the usefulness of chemicals for the destruction of weeds on a large scale. Methods which have proved efficient elsewhere may also prove to be efficient here. The soil and climatic conditions of California, however, are so different from those of regions where the chemical method has proved satisfactory, that it is by no means certain that this will be the case. A study of the literature gave encouragement that weed pests might be controlled under local conditions if the conditions were carefully studied and the treatment made accordingly. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Weeds: With Descriptions of All the Most Pernicious and Troublesome Plants in the United States and Canada, Their Habits of Growth and Distribution, With Methods of Control Nature is the great farmer. Continually she sows and reaps, making all the forces of the universe her tools and helpers. The sun's rays, wind, rain, frost and snow, insects and birds, animals small and great, even to the humble burrowing worms of the earth, all work mightily for her and a harvest of some kind is absolutely sure. And to the people who must wrest a living from the soil, not only for themselves but for all mankind besides, it must seem that Nature's favorites are the hardy, aggressive, and often useless and harmful plants which they have named weeds. Yet, when man interferes with the Great Mother's plans and insists that the crops shall be only such as may benefit and enrich himself, she seems to yield a willing obedience, and under his guid ance does immensely better work than when uncontrolled. But Dame Nature is an eye-servant only by the sternest determina tion and the most unrelam'ng vigilance can her fellow-worker subdue the earth to his will and fulfill the destiny foreshadowed in that primal blessing, so sadly disguised and misnamed, when the first man was told, Cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat of the herb of the field. A stern decree. But the civilization of the peoples of the earth is measured by the forward state of their agriculture; and agriculture in its simplest terms is the compelling of the soil to yield only such products as shall conduce to the welfare of the people who live upon it. It resolves itself into a contest with nature as to what plants shall be permitted to grow, and the discovery of the easiest, surest, and most economical means of securing a victory in the strife. Book Weed Control Classic Reprint

Download or read book Weed Control Classic Reprint written by Walter Scott Ball and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-05 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Weed Control According to the State Seed Laboratory, alfalfa seed may contain the seeds of barnyard or water grass, dodder, Russian thistle, creeping mallow, yellow star thistle, Johnson grass, morning-glory, bull thistle, Russian knapweed, and hoary cress. Found in barley are yellow star thistle, morning-glory, blessed thistle, barnyard grass, and Johnson grass. Seed oats and wheat may contain these same impurities. In Sudan grass the common weed seeds were barnyard grass, morning-glory, Russian thistle, Johnson grass, and yellow star thistle. Though these cases were observed by the Seed Laboratory, the ex change Of seed from farmer to farmer usually involves inferior grades never submitted for analysis. This uncontrolled sale largely explains the thousands of acres of morning-glory, yellow star thistle, Russian knap weed, and other noxious weeds in California today. Book Handbook of Biological Control

Download or read book Handbook of Biological Control written by T. W. Fisher and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1999-09-20 with total page 1073 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many years the use of chemical agents such as pesticides and herbicides has been effective in controlling the many varieties of pests that infest both agricultural crops and backyard gardens. However, these pests are gradually becoming resistant to these agents, because the agents themselves are acting as selective factors making the pests better and better able to resist and persist. As a result, the use of biological controlling agents is increasing. This book is a comprehensive and authoritative handbook of biological control.
