Book excerpt: Drive down almost any street in Webster Groves and one is filled with a sense of timelessness. Entire neighborhoods are in the National Register of Historic Places, and there are lovingly preserved century homes, beautiful old churches, avenues lined with gardens, and shopping districts more reminiscent of small-town America than a thriving suburb next door to the city of St. Louis. History runs deep here, as it is home to the first chapter of the Red Cross and the first Boy Scout Troop west of the Mississippi, the oldest women's organization in Missouri, the first professional fire department, and the first public library in St. Louis County. North Webster once held the only accredited high school for African American students in St. Louis County. Beginning as a site of country homes for St. Louis professionals, growing through a post-World War II boom that expanded into new neighborhoods, Webster Groves has remained true to its heritage and history.

Book excerpt: What does it mean to be part of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)? A denomination that intentionally unites Christians who have different ideas about what it means to be Christian is bound to struggle to agree on its core values and beliefs — but respected Disciples Michael Kinnamon and Jan Linn believe unity is possible through reforming worship, relationships, and mission. A timely update of their landmark book, Disciples identifies common ground and continues the conversation started by Stone and Campbell two centuries ago on the American frontier.

Book Collaboration of Women s and Men s Leadership

Download or read book Collaboration of Women s and Men s Leadership written by Edith Khakasa Chemorion and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2023-02-24 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Moving from Hegemony to Partnership in Leadership When God created women and men, the intention was for them to be partners with each other and to serve in the world as cocreators with God. The story of human beings, however, has been impacted with culture and other social factors to create different forms of hegemonies. These hegemonies have been key in values that create social injustices that are in all spheres of life but more so in women and men relationships. In cases of leadership and in many cultures, men have adopted attitudes that justify exclusion of women from leadership. In religious circles, it is justified by the ways texts are read and interpreted through the lens of culture. If we begin from the premises of justice and believing in a God of justice, then hegemonic ways of understating leadership should be null and void. Acknowledging that human beings are created in the image and likeness of God demands that we act differently. What this has meant is to challenge injustice in leadership by men and women in partnership. The circle of concerned African women theologians in Africa, where Rev. Edith Chemorion is a member, has, over the years, provided safe spaces for mentoring women to research and write about the experiences of women but much more so to call for justice in all areas, including the study of theological education and for leadership in the churches. This has borne results because of the partnership of men and women. Reverend Edith's contributions to the rallying call is that society moves from hegemony to partnership in all fronts, but especially in offering leadership by all. We are strong when we partner, and we image God's will for society in partnership. Prof. Esther Mombo Lecturer, Faculty of Theology St. Paul's University, Limuru, Kenya

Book J H Garrison and Disciples of Christ

Download or read book J H Garrison and Disciples of Christ written by William E. Tucker and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2015-04-28 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The years between the Civil War and 1930 constitute the most critical period in the history of Disciples of Christ, yet little attempt has been made to understand that era's most prominent leaders, one of whom was J. H. Garrison. For more than sixty years, he edited and contributed to The Christian-Evangelist, the journal that became the weekly periodical of the Disciples. An editor with vast influence, he played a significant and sometimes decisive role in the life of his communion. This book is more than the story of one man; it is a critical study of the turbulent and transitional era in Disciple history spanned by his editorial career. The value of this book is enhanced by the extensive use that is made of J. H. Garrison's letters and diaries. This rich collection of source material has only recently been made available for historical research.
