Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The literature which has been reviewed presented overwhelming evidence for the need to consider weather in agricultural experiments. The primary purpose of this study has been to find a single atmospheric-soil moisture stress variable which is correlated with final corn yield. It is hoped that the use of this moisture stress variable will facilitate and encourage the consideration of weather with other environmental and technological factors in agricultural research and extension. The consideration of the weather will help evaluate the spatial and temperal representativeness of experimental results. Two atmospheric-moisture stress variables were found to be highly correlated with unreplicated plot corn yields from secon year corn in the 4-year rotation experiment, corn-corn-oats-meadow, at the Iowa State University Agronomy Farm, Ames, Iowa. One of the variable was the number of days on which the corn was estimated to be under no moisture stress, in the period 6 weeks before 3 weeks after date of silking. The estimation of moisture stress or no moisture stress conditions was based on the experimental relation found by Denmead and Shaw (10). OTL = f(ETFC), where OTL is the percent available soil moisture below which the corn plant loses turgor. The amount of available soil moisture at the turgor loss point depends upon the atmospheric demands or the evapotranspirations at field capacity, ETFC. The ETFC was estimated from the daily evaporation form a weather Bureau class a evaporation pan. (...).

Book Measuring the Effects of Weather on Agricultural Output

Download or read book Measuring the Effects of Weather on Agricultural Output written by LAWRENCE H. SHAW and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-04-24 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Measuring the Effects of Weather on Agricultural Output: Procedures for Constructing Weather Indexes When we talk about weather in agriculture, we are interested in the net influence of all meteorological and closely associated factors on output. Weather and technol ogy, therefore, are defined in their broadest sense. Weather is those conditions Of the crop-growing environment that are beyond the control of farmers; technology is the sum total Of controllable resources and how they are used. Weather indexes for corn yields and production in Iowa from 1929 to 1960 were constructed using a plot data approach. State indexes were developed by aggregating weather indexes for individual Crop Reporting districts. The weather indexes were used in adjusting for the influence of weather the State and district actual yields per harvested acre and total production of corn. Variation in the adjusted yield series is an estimate of the effect of changes in technology. The series of adjusted corn yields for Iowa, 1929-60, indicates that improved technology increased yields in two steps. Yields from 1929 to 1935 were relatively stable. Beginning around 1935, corn yields increased rapidly until the early l94o's. This was the period marked by the rapid acceptance Of hybrid seed corn. Less than 1 percent of the corn acreage in 1933 was planted with hybrid seed; the percentage increased to nearly 99 by 1942. Corn yields remained at the new level throughout the l94o's and early l95o's. Then about 1954 a second period of yield increase began. This second increase does not appear to be due to any single factor but to a combina tion of improved practices such as increased use of fertilizer and higher planting rates. Book Weather Effects on Expected Corn and Soybean Yields

Download or read book Weather Effects on Expected Corn and Soybean Yields written by Paul C. Westcott and published by . This book was released on 2013-08-30 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Weather during the growing season is critical for corn and soybean yields. Adjusting for weather in an analysis of historical U.S. corn and soybean yields is important for determining underlying trends and future yield expectations. Models for U.S. corn and soybean yields provide estimates of the effects of weather on yields for those crops, allowing an analysis of those effects to be used to derive weather-adjusted trend yields. The corn model also includes planting progress by the middle of May. The estimated models indicate that reductions in precipitation below its average result in larger declines in yields than the gains in yields resulting from increases in precipitation of equal magnitudes above its average. The yield models are used to track effects of high temperatures and drought on U.S. corn and soybean yields in 2012 and to provide estimates for expected 2013 yields. Further, the models provide a framework for assessing changes in expected yields due to planting progress and weather developments. Figures and tables. This is a print on demand report.
