Mirabile dictu!” Professor Robert Cowen How have modern societies arrived at assuming: · Culture is non-essential! · Higher education is to train economically but not socio-politically active & engaged citizens! · Economic wealth is the most important and prominent form of individual and national assets! · Precariousness and socio-economic gaps are due to individuals’ skills and capacities but not the failure of legal, political, and social systems! · Freedom and equality are about “choices in having” but not necessarily about “ways of being and becoming”! Torabian argues these assumptions have not been constructed overnight and that COVID-19 has simply revealed their long-term fabrication and impact since the 1970s. This book is a fascinating voyage from the Middle Ages to today. It travels across different socio-cultural and political contexts drawing on arts, literary works, music, philosophical thoughts, economic and social concepts. It explores value systems and perceptions of wealth, poverty, and inequality and depicts the mutual impact and shifting role of (higher) education and culture and societies- particularly when related to social revolutions, political participation, and collective quests for equality and justice across time and spaces. Examining instrumentalisation of culture and education by the powerful elite, Torabian delineates mechanisms through which values are fabricated and imposed on the masses. Drawing on some catching examples, she explains the authoritarian elite do so through visible rewards and punishments, while in capitalist societies power remains invisible and indirect. In both contexts, though, she skilfully demonstrates, the powerful groups transform the role and meaning of culture and higher education to facilitate normalisation and internalisation of their fabricated value system among the masses. Consequently, Torabian celebrates the recently accelerated quest for socio-ecological justice and sustainability across societies as a fortunate cosmopolitan shift. This, she believes, announces a rupture with the dominant capitalist ideology that has reigned the world since the 1970s through celebrity culture, media, propaganda, and by reducing higher education to an economic activity. The pursuit of a socio-ecological contract based on fairness, justice, and participation, Torabian argues, requires a renewed value system in which the socio-political role of culture and higher education can be revitalised. To this end, she introduces an innovative framework, i.e., the Big Wealth Pie (the topic of the author’s upcoming book in this series) and proposes using transgressive education, resistance pedagogy, and teaching ignorance. She reckons such a social contract can be a global reality if “being” replaces the capitalist ideology of “having”; a process that can be started and reified by questioning what is or is not essential in socio-ecologically just societies. The book is thought-provoking and timely in questioning values and social institutions that have normalised precariousness, inequality, and poverty within a consumerist logic.

Book excerpt: Patrick Geddes is one of the most important figures in planning history, variously presented as an inspiration to regional planning, environmental planning and sustainability, grass-roots planning, citizen democracy, historic preservation, neighbourhood upgrading, university–community partnership, lifelong learning, and co-operative housing. Though well-known and often praised by planning historians, his scholarship extended across a much broader range of disciplines, with extensive publication on biology and on civics, and significant contributions to sociology, economics, geography, education, and the arts and humanities. With the exception of his plan of Dunfermline, published in 1904, his plans are very hard to find. Most of his plans were prepared in India between 1915 and 1923, but beyond brief extracts from four of them included by Jaqueline Tyrwhitt in the book Patrick Geddes in India, they are very difficult to obtain. Some are lost altogether and the remainder are available in a handful of libraries, often held in Archives. Of all the plans prepared after Dunfermline, the most extensive is for the city of Indore, originally published in two volumes that combine a comprehensive scheme for the urban development of the city with a detailed plan for the proposed University of Central India.

In the contemporary epoch of globalization and the advent of Industry 4.0, global communication transcends temporal and spatial boundaries, with language assuming a preeminent role therein. The fortification and consolidation of Indonesian's role in this communicative milieu are imperative. Yet, given the intricate nature of the Indonesian populace, the augmentation and fortification of Indonesian's role necessitates sustained endeavors to ensure the preservation of Indonesian cultural identity within the nation's human resources. Diligent initiatives to fortify Indonesian as the lingua franca of scientific discourse in this era of globalization demand concerted engagement from various stakeholders, including the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Program (PBSI) within the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) at the Islamic University of Malang. The forthcoming Third International Conference on Language, Literature, and Cultural Education (ICON-LLCE) will center its focus on augmenting the role of Indonesian language towards the advancement of scientific inquiry and global civilization. The digital transformation, which has pervaded Indonesian society, has been markedly accelerated by the global pandemic that has gripped the world since early 2020. Communities worldwide have transitioned their activities to virtual realms, necessitating adaptability to the digital milieu across diverse sectors encompassing commerce, industry, governance, and education. This transition is marked by an increasing reliance on the digital domain, internet infrastructure, and intelligent computing systems, including artificial intelligence, which Bill Gates heralds as commensurate in impact to the advents of mobile telephony and the internet ("The Age of AI has Begun," 2023). The digital transformation denotes a comprehensive process wherein organizations integrate digital technology across all facets of operation, thus altering the manner in which value is delivered to Indonesian-speaking constituencies. In the Indonesian context, this entails the fundamental adoption of innovative digital technologies to effect cultural and operational shifts that harmonize with evolving demands, habits, and exigencies of the Indonesian-speaking populace. Significantly, this encompasses an expansive online Indonesian dictionary, the integration of information technology and the internet in the pedagogical sphere of teaching Indonesian Language and Literature, and the infusion of artificial intelligence into the educational process for Indonesian as a Second Language (BIPA). Additionally, the repository of books and reference materials in Indonesian will be transitioned to a cloud-based mode, facilitating universal accessibility. In summation, the Internet of Things (IoT) precipitates a discernible transformation in the modes of access and utilization of the Indonesian language, particularly within the domain of scientific inquiry. From the foregoing elucidation, it is underscored that Indonesian, as the official language of the Indonesian state, assumes a pivotal and strategic role in fortifying the national identity and safeguarding the enduring vitality of the language itself. In light of this, the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Program (PBSI) within the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) at the University of Islam Malang will convene the third iteration of the International Conference on Language, Literature, and Cultural Education (ICON-LLCE) in September 2023, under the overarching theme of "Augmenting the Role of Indonesian for the Advancement of Science and Global Civilization. This international conference, which has been ongoing since 2015, succeeds the second edition convened in November 2021. Through this imminent iteration of ICON-LLCE, distinguished scholars and academics representing various global locales will convene to engage in thoughtful deliberations pertaining to initiatives aimed at safeguarding and fortifying the enduring pertinence and robustness of the Indonesian language within the ambit of forthcoming intellectual pursuits and the broader global cultural discourse.

Educational rights are included in many national constitutions written since the global spread of human rights ideas after World War II. But as a global idea, the meaning of educational rights varies between civilizations. In this book, which builds on the concept of the universal right to education set forth in Spring's The Universal Right to Education: Justification, Definition, and Guidelines, his intercivilizational analysis of educational rights focuses on four of the world's major civilizations: Confucian, Islamic, Western, and Hindu. He also considers the tension this generates within different civilizational traditions. Next, he proceeds to: *examine the meaning of educational rights in the Confucian tradition, in the recent history of China, and in the Chinese Constitution; *look at educational rights in the context of Islamic civilization and as presented in the constitutions of Islamic countries, including an analysis of the sharp contrast between the religious orientation of Islamic educational rights and those of China and the West; *explore the problems created by the Western natural rights tradition and the eventual acceptance of educational rights as represented in European constitutions, with a focus on the development and prominence given in the West to the relationship between schooling and equality of opportunity; and, *investigate the effect of global culture on India and the blend of Western and Hindu ideas in the Indian constitution, highlighting the obstacles to fulfillment of educational rights created by centuries of discrimination against women and lower castes. In his conclusion, Spring presents an educational rights statement based on his intercivilizational analysis and his examination of national constitutions. This statement is intended to serve as a model for the inclusion of educational rights in national constitutions.

We would love to hear responses to either or both opinion articles and are working on plans to share such responses, perhaps on one of our related websites. At this point, we plan on publishing more opinion articles, and for now, by invitation. However, we are always willing to consider unsolicited articles for possible inclusion in the JCE.

At this time of ever-increasing ecological crisis, such education is needed more than ever before.
