Book Inheriting Wealth in America

Download or read book Inheriting Wealth in America written by Edward N. Wolff and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-01-27 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inheritances are often regarded as a societal "evil," enabling great fortunes to be passed from one generation to another, thus exacerbating wealth inequality and reducing wealth mobility. Discussions of inheritances in America bring to mind the Vanderbilts, Rockefellers, and "trust fund babies"---people who receive enough money through inheritances or gifts that they do not have any need to work during their lifetime. Though these are, of course, extreme outliers, inheritances in America have a reputation for being a way the rich keep getting richer. In Inheriting Wealth in America, Edward Wolff seeks to counter these misconceptions with data and arguments that illuminate who inherits what in the United States and what results from these wealth transfers. Using data from the Survey of Consumer Finances---a triennial survey conducted by the Federal Reserve Board that contains detailed information on household wealth, inheritances, and gifts---as well as the Panel Study of Income Dynamics and a simulation model over years 1989 to 2010, Wolff reports six major findings on the state of inheritances in America. First, wealth transfers (inheritances and gifts) accounted for less than one quarter of household wealth. However, for persons age 75 and over, the figure was about two-fifths since they have more time to receive wealth transfers. Indirect evidence, derived from the simulation model, indicates a figure closer to two-thirds at end of life - probably the best estimate. Second, despite prognostications of a coming "inheritance boom," it has not materialized yet. Only a small (and statistically insignificant) uptick in average wealth transfers was observed over the period, and wealth transfers were actually down as a share of household wealth. Third, while wealth transfers are greater in dollar amount for richer households than poorer ones, they constitute a smaller share of the accumulated wealth of the rich. Fourth, contrary to popular belief, inheritances and gifts, on net, reduce wealth inequality rather than raising it. The rationale is that inheritances and particularly gifts typically flow from richer to poorer persons, thus lowering wealth inequality. Fifth, despite a rapid rise in income inequality, the inequality of wealth transfers shows no discernible time trend from 1989 to 2010, neither upward nor downward. Sixth, among the very wealthy, the share of wealth accounted for by wealth transfers is surprisingly low, only about a sixth, and this share has trended significantly downward over time. It is true that inheritances and gifts are unequal, with only one fifth of families receiving wealth transfers and these transfers benefitting the rich far more than the middle class and the poor. That, however, is not the whole picture of inheritances in America. Clearly-written and illuminating, this books expertly distills an abundance of data on inheritances into important takeaways for all who wonder about the current state of inheritances and gifts in the United States.

Book The Inexhaustible Wealth the World Little Knows about

Download or read book The Inexhaustible Wealth the World Little Knows about written by Donart Ngarambe and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2017-08-11 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Inexhaustible Wealth ... Often people think that God doesn't exist, and if he does at all, he might be too far away to care about what happens on earth. We often assume that life starts on earth and ends on it, but actually, life starts from beyond and continues beyond the earth stage. The book elaborates on the fact that life is both of physical and spiritual dimensions, of which we're obliged to know. William of Ockham, in the Dialogus, 1614 Edition, stated: "ignorance of a divine law that has been made known among everyone does not absolve, just as ignorance of natural law does not absolve ..." We generally feel that what matters is to conquer the insecurities of life through amassing wealth, power, education, and other things, but life is more than livelihood. The Inexhaustible wealth satisfies both the physical and spiritual needs of a human being. The book also elaborates on the fact that a human being consists of body, soul and spirit of which the body and the soul describe the person but his spirit describes the spiritual IDENTITY and DESTINY of the person. Our spiritual identity determines our destiny, and our spiritual identity is acquired through spiritual birth, and has nothing to do with our good manners or observance of religious best practices. The Bible clearly indicates that God is the source of the INEXHAUSTIBLE WEALTH: "His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness." (2 Peter 1:3). About the Author Donart Ngarambe received his basic training in electrical and electronics engineering and PhD in computer engineering. Currently he serves as the dean of the School of ICT in the University of Rwanda. Since he got born again in 1982, Dr. Ngarambe has been involved in evangelistic and intercessory ministries. Presently, he serves as an elder in the Christian Life Assembly - Kigali, which is under the Assemblies of God ministries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We realized that riches do not come as a result of a life of struggle and sacrifice. According to the Bible, we obtain wealth through specific spirits for this. These spirits are at our service because that is their job and function. Each spirit sent and created by God to help human beings on earth has its activity and capacity. Just as God empowers every human being for specific functions and activities, so are spirits. From now on, we just need to know each spirit's correct and specific assignment to reach the end we want. The result that WE desire, as GOD Himself promised us. "For I know the thoughts that I have concerning you, saith the Lord; thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you the end you hope for." (Jeremiah 29:11)

Book The Theology of Craft and the Craft of Work

Download or read book The Theology of Craft and the Craft of Work written by Jeremy Kidwell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-06-03 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An important reconceptualisation is taking place in the way people express creativity, work together, and engage in labour; particularly, suggests Kidwell, a surprising resurgence in recent years of manual and craft work. Noting the wide array of outlets that now market hand-made goods and the array of popular books which advocate ‘making’ as a basis for activism or personal improvement, this book seeks to understand how the micro-politics of craft work might offer insights for a broader theology of work. Why does it matter that we do work which is meaningful, excellent, and beautiful? Through a close reading of Christian scripture, The Theology of Craft and the Craft of Work examines the theology and ethics of work in light of original biblical exegesis. Kidwell presents a detailed exegetical study of temple construction accounts in the Hebrew bible and the New Testament. Illuminating a theological account of craft, and employing the ancient vision of ‘good work’ which is preserved in these biblical texts, Kidwell critically interrogates modern forms of industrial manufacture. This includes a variety of contemporary work problems particularly the instrumentalisation and exploitation of the non-human material world and the dehumanisation of workers. Primary themes taken up in the book include agency, aesthetics, sociality, skill, and the material culture of work, culminating with the conclusion that the church (or ‘new temple’) is both the product and the site of moral work. Arguing that Christian worship provides a moral context for work, this book also examines early Christian practices to suggest a theological reconceptualisation of work.

Book The Oxford Handbook of Daniel Defoe

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Daniel Defoe written by Nicholas Seager and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-02-29 with total page 721 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of Daniel Defoe is the most comprehensive overview available of the author's life, times, writings, and reception. Daniel Defoe (1660-1731) is a major author in world literature, renowned for a succession of novels including Robinson Crusoe, Moll Flanders, and A Journal of the Plague Year, but more famous in his lifetime as a poet, journalist, and political agent. Across his vast oeuvre, which includes books, pamphlets, and periodicals, Defoe commented on virtually every development and issue of his lifetime, a turbulent and transformative period in British and global history. Defoe has proven challenging to position--in some respects he is a traditional and conservative thinker, but in other ways he is a progressive and innovative writer. He therefore benefits from the range of critical appraisals offered in this Handbook. The Handbook ranges from concerns of gender, class, and race to those of politics, religion, and economics. In accessible but learned chapters, contributors explore salient contexts in ways that show how they overlap and intersect, such as in chapters on science, environment, and empire. The Handbook provides both a thorough introduction to Defoe and to early eighteenth-century society, culture, and literature more broadly. Thirty-six chapters by leading literary scholars and historians explore the various genres in which Defoe wrote; the sociocultural contexts that inform his works; his writings on different locales, from the local to the global; and the posthumous reception and creative responses to his works.
