The youngest, Kausar, grapples with the incomprehensible loss of their parents as she also charts out her own understanding of gender; Aisha, the middle sister, spars with her “crybaby” younger sibling as she desperately tries to hold on to her sense of family in an impossible situation; and Noreen, the eldest, does her best in the role of sister-mother while also trying to create a life for herself, on her own terms. As Kausar grows up, she must contend with the collision of her private and public worlds, and choose whether to remain in the life of love, sorrow, and codependency that she’s known or carve out a new path for herself. When We Were Sisters tenderly examines the bonds and fractures of sisterhood, names the perils of being three Muslim American girls alone against the world, and ultimately illustrates how those who’ve lost everything might still make homes in one another. Book excerpt: This book is about sisters. It is a celebration of the special relationship we have with our sister. Sisters who we love no matter what. Most of all it is a book about appreciating the unique bond we share with our sister.Filled with inspirational words and exquisite photographs of animals, this book will warm her heart. Combine your own special message along with the uplifting words of others, to bring a smile to your Sister’s face and create fond memories each time she opens it. The Little Book of Sisters will be a treasured keepsake for years to come. Introduction Sisterhood is a special kind of place Sisters have a special relationship quite unlike any other. Whether you are close or distant to your sister, there is something that unites you. It is the knowing that you both share a common place where you grew up in. It's a special kind of community filled with childhood memories and family secrets that only sisters really share. Sisterhood is a unique kind of neighbourhood. Within this place sisters afford themselves a special kind of freedom, a freedom to share their inner thoughts, and be themselves to express their lightness and dark shadows. There is a kind of beauty in this place where sisters can be real. It's where expressing one's fears is acceptable, well, tolerated anyway. In the sisterhood, the rules are not the same as in most societies - sisters here feel safe to be themselves because deep down even if their sister drives her to want to strangle her, they both know that a special kind of love exists. In the outside world time waits for noone. Yet in the sisterhood, time can stand still. Husbands may come and go, friends grow up and move on, children too grow up and spread their wings. But sisters share a special place that time cannot change. Having a relationship that no matter what life may bring will always be there is heartwarming. In childhood, sisters teach each other great lessons, and the biggest lesson is sharing. Some sisters are very competitive for their parents affection and attention and this may follow on into adult life. Sisterhood is a hothouse for growth. It is where we sisters learn great lessons in life in the safety of this inside world. Sisters learn about sharing, about getting along with others, cooperation, fairness, patience, tolerance and love. If ever there was a place to gain wisdom it is in sisterhood. It often takes somes sisters to reach old age before they can fully appreciate each other. It is then that memories take on a new life. It is then that sisters reminisce of good and bad times, of childhood indiscretions, fights, and joyful times shared. There is a special place that outsiders can't fathom or fully understand. It's where two old ladies can sit on a porch or on the phone for hours, and laugh and smile and giggle and remember all the characters that inhabited their special neighbourhood. It's a place where they know their conversation won't bore the pants of each other. In the sisterhood, some things never die.

Book The Role of Sisters in Women s Development

Download or read book The Role of Sisters in Women s Development written by Sue A. Kuba and published by OUP USA. This book was released on 2011-04 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psychological theory has traditionally overlooked or minimized the role of siblings in development, focusing instead on parent-child attachment relationships. The importance of sisters has been even more marginalized. Sue A. Kuba explores this omission in The Role of Sisters in Women's Development, seeking to broaden and enrich current understanding of the psychology of women. This unique work is distinguished by Kuba's phenomenological method of research, rooted in a single prompt: "Tell me about your relationship with your sister." Rich in detail, the responses (many of which are reproduced at length within the book) provide a complex picture of sister relationships across the lifespan. Integrating these stories with current literature about gender and family composition for sisters of difference (disabled and lesbian sisters) and ethnic sisters, this book provides useful recommendations for therapeutic understanding of the significance of sisters in everyday life, integrating diverse perspectives in order to address the ways clinicians can enhance psychological work with women clients. A valuable contribution to the field of mental health, The Role of Sisters in Women's Development is highly recommended for therapists who wish to broaden their inquiry into the sister connection, as well as anyone who wants to further understand the importance of sisterhood.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The remarkable true story of the Queen Alexandra frontline nurses in the Second World War. The amazing experiences of the Queen Alexandra nurses in the Second World War form one of the greatest adventure stories of modern times, and - incredibly - remain largely untold. Thousands of middle-class girls, barely out of school, were plucked from sheltered backgrounds, subjected to training regimes unimaginably tough by today's standards, and sent forth to share the harsh conditions of the fighting services. They had to deal with the most appalling suffering, yet most found reserves of inner strength that carried them through episodes of unrelieved horror. Over 200 nurses died, torpedoed in hospital ships, bombed in field hospitals or murdered in Japanese prison camps. Dozens won medals for gallantry. From the beaches of Dunkirk, to Singapore and D-Day, they saw it all. Whether tending burned pilots from the Battle of Britain or improvising medical treatment in Japanese death camps, their dedication was second to none. This is their story.

Book excerpt: Ask the Grey Sisters: Sault Ste. Marie and the General Hospital, 1898-1998 tells the story of the creation and one-hundred-year history of the Sault Ste. Marie General Hospital. At a time when Canada's healthcare system is at a crossroads and we are asked to make crucial decisions for its future, it is intriguing and enlightening to look at the colourful past of a typical community hospital. Throughout the 1890s, Sault Ste. Marie was a town in search of a hospital. Its glory days at the centre of the fur-trade route were long gone and the Sault was in the process of becoming a modern industrial community. Such a community needed a hospital as a centrepiece to attract investors and as a necessary social institution to care for the hundreds of workers who were flocking to town without family support. The General Hospital was established in 1898 after the town committee charged with developing a hospital had been refused funding by both the federal and provincial governments. In desperation, the committee met with the provincial Inspector of Asylums and Prisons (the only provincial official with hospitals in his mandate). "If you wish a hospital of which the work is serious and lasting," he is reported to have advised them, "ask the Grey Sisters." And so began a fruitful association between the community of Sault Ste. Marie and two orders of Grey Sisters who have operated the hospital through its one-hundred-year history. Based in part on the extensive archival collections of both orders of nuns, this history includes material from the sisters' Chronicles and their personal reminiscences. The result is an intimate and detailed portrait of a community hospital, placed in the context of an emerging provincial system of health care.

They are both united, though, by their secret, paranormal power to read other’s minds, their only saving grace in a world that seems bent to destroy them. This time the nuns seem intent on killing her. Yet that doesn’t pain her as much as her broken heart. Will Sebastian realize his mistake and come back for her? Her younger sister Kate, 15, embarks on her training with the witch, coming of age under her auspices, mastering the sword, gaining more power than she ever imagined possible—and determined to embark on a quest to save her sister. She finds herself immersed in a world of violence and combat, of a magic she craves—and yet one that may consume her. Jane with her broken bones--leg and pelvis--and scars on her head and the loneliness she had on waiting and waiting while her sister Jessie laid unconscious for days. Jessie Mohe and Jane Ann thought that they had a simple and easygoing life with their biological parents as they were always playing outside and only had a few responsibilities. As they would play with their other siblings, they would also perform several mischievous acts that would get them into some trouble. Their older immediate family seemed to almost always be around as these harmless schemes would happen, and they would get a good laugh from it all. Where is everyone whom we know personally--our parents, Gpa Jess, Uncle Jerry, and Uncle Bernard--and we are closest to? It's cloudy, and we can't see no one. Where is our life that we knew? Our little brains were working and going around in circles and circles. Our trauma, the anger we had in separate ways. After the accident, they would join their family with a new and very different lifestyle. They would experience new food, people, and unbelievable ways of life. The foster mother would push them to try new things, learn to be independent, and to be better people. As they go through new experiences, she would be right there to guide them. In their adult life, they would figure out many unsolved mysteries in their family, while several would still remain unsolved.
