Book excerpt: Each phase of Arab-Israeli peacemaking has been inordinately difficult in its own right, and every critical juncture and decision point in the long process has been shaped by U.S. politics and the U.S. leaders of the moment. The Peace Puzzle tracks the American determination to articulate policy, develop strategy and tactics, and see through negotiations to agreements on an issue that has been of singular importance to U.S. interests for more than forty years. In 2006, the authors of The Peace Puzzle formed the Study Group on Arab-Israeli Peacemaking, a project supported by the United States Institute of Peace, to develop a set of "best practices" for American diplomacy. The Study Group conducted in-depth interviews with more than 120 policymakers, diplomats, academics, and civil society figures and developed performance assessments of the various U.S. administrations of the post–Cold War period. This book, an objective account of the role of the United States in attempting to achieve a lasting Arab–Israeli peace, is informed by the authors’ access to key individuals and official archives.

Book Busy Lives Restless Souls

Book excerpt: 2019 Best Book Awards, Finalist: Religion--Christian Inspirational If you've already figured out your life and feel totally complete, then this book may not be for you. But if you are like the rest of us, every day presents a mountain of to-do items, jobs to go to, errands to run, projects to complete, meals to cook, children to raise... You forge ahead and get it done, but you know that things aren't as they should be. Even when you check every item off your daily list, you still feel as though something meaningful and essential is missing from the very center of your life. Spiritual director and writer Becky Eldredge has felt that same longing, and she knows what people are missing--a relationship with God through prayer. In Busy Lives & Restless Souls, Eldredge interprets principles of Ignatian spirituality in a fresh way to equip us with prayer tools that are accessible and practical within the relentless realities of our daily routines. Just as important, she shows us how we can bring our relationship with God to life by becoming what St. Ignatius called "contemplatives in action." For all who sense that there is a missing peace in their lives, Busy Lives &Restless Souls will help them find it--right where they are.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most widely accepted ways of describing an addiction is as a disease, but do we realize what we are saying when we describe it that way? Our current language and approach to addiction is not only lacking in depth but is keeping us blind to an amazing way that God is working in each and every one of us. What if our addictions are not broken parts of us that we have to get rid of, but invitations from God to new depth and transformation? When we are able to hold this experience gently and look at it anew, it reveals a new depth to how we can understand ourselves, our suffering, and God. For too long we have been trying to treat addiction like a disease, and tear it out by the root, but we are invited to something more in our humanity; something that we will never find if we continue to wish away our suffering. Author David Tremaine explores the possibilities of understanding addiction not as a diseased part of our humanity, but as a blessed part of our spiritual journey, and sheds new light on this deeply engrained experience of God.

Book excerpt: The bestselling author of Love Unending and Midnight Mom Devotional reassures anxious women that even if you can't shake off fear, your faith is not broken. For years, Christian women have been told, "If you just prayed more, had more faith, and trusted Jesus, you'd have more peace." But what does it mean when a Christian momma continues to worry? How does she reconcile her feelings of fear with her faith in God? And how does she raise her children in a home full of peace when she feels anything but peaceful? Becky Thompson, a best-selling author with a degree in biblical studies, knows firsthand what it is like to suffer from the crippling effects of anxiety--a condition she has struggled to overcome for most of her life. For her and many others, the fear she faces is not a faith issue. It's a physical one that affects over 40 million adults in the US. As Becky examines the relationship between the promise of peace in Scripture and the reality of life, motherhood, and anxiety, she brings both a practical and spiritual approach to the discussion of anxiety and how it impacts your mind, body, and spirit. Peace meets moms in the forest of fear where they have felt isolated and alone and walks them toward hope, reminding them that there are millions of other women who walk the same dark, uncertain trails they do and there isn't something wrong with their faith because they can't shake the fear. Peace is a lifeline for the Christian mom desperate for solid advice based on sound doctrine and presented in a way that makes her feel understood and far less alone on her journey toward healing.

Book Creating a Culture of Invitation in Your Church

Download or read book Creating a Culture of Invitation in Your Church written by Michael Harvey MBA and published by Monarch Books. This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We like to think our church welcomes visitors. But how welcoming can we be, if we are not inviting? We are welcoming as long as people get themselves across the church threshold, but we fail to take our welcome outside. During the years Michael has been developing Back to Church Sunday, he has conducted an extensive study on the seemingly simple subject of 'invitation'. Over 650 times in 12 countries he has asked: 'Why don't we invite our friends to take a closer look at Christ?' The many answers form the impetus for this book. After considering why it seems so hard to invite friends to church, Michael looks at our concerns over acceptance and rejection, and suggests ideas gleaned from years of trying to establish a culture of invitation. 'When I have specifically encouraged Christians to issue an invitation, some people say yes and some no. God sent his son to invite us all into a relationship, and so to be like God is to be a person who invites!'

Book I Burned for Your Peace

Download or read book I Burned for Your Peace written by Peter Kreeft and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2016-08-10 with total page 236 pages. He collects key passages and offers incisive commentary, making Confessions accessible to any reader who is both intellectually curious and spiritually hungry. The Confessions is a dramatic personal narrative of a soul choosing between eternal life and death, an exploration of the timeless questions great minds have been asking for millennia, and a prayer of praise and thanksgiving to God. I Burned for Your Peace is not a scholarly work but an unpacking of the riches found in Augustine's text. It is existential, personal, and devotional, as well as warm, witty, and thought-provoking. With Kreeft to guide them, readers of the Confessions can overhear and understand the intimate conversation between a towering intellect and the God whose peace he at last humbly accepts.

Book Crossing the Great Divide

Download or read book Crossing the Great Divide written by Dr. Charles Frazier and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2023-01-22 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In my pursuit of worldly success, I became lost in the darkness of the world. The road I was walking, God gave me signs and detours I choose to ignore. I let the enemy lead me into the dark abyss of life. Then one day, God shined a ray of hope into the darkness and brought me to a dead-end road. He led, I followed, and He brought His lost sheep home. He spoke, I listened, and I heard His voice. “He said, let us take our journey, and let us go, and I will go before thee” (Genesis 33:12). He would heal me, our home, marriage, and family. He would bless us through obedience; give me grace I did not deserve. He would teach me to have faith in Him as we walked the white rock path to cross the Great Divide to the other side. He would teach me as we journeyed to the top of the mountain in search of the lone tree atop the mountain.

Book An Applied Theory of Self

Download or read book An Applied Theory of Self written by Jorge A. Barriere-Mendez and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I stand here with a difficult task: to propose and to discuss an Applied Theory of Self that saved my life. Let me say that again – saved my life. I wish someone else had written it thirty years ago and had placed it in my hands. It would have been a life with less heartache and headaches. A better, fuller life. And so, this is why I’m here: I’m here to say that the reality you see, is not real. I’m here to say that those words you speak and those acts you author, are not yours. I’m here to say that life is not out there as you have been taught, but inside of you and that it is yours. I’m here to say that all that exist and will ever exist is now, here, right now. That it will always be NOW. I’m here to say that this is your movie, that this is your life, and I’m here to ask: what is it about? Your movie – what is it about? The question is not what is it about during, but what is it about at the end? I’m here to say that that decision you make right now, you are always making.! I’m also here to say that I’m not going to get metaphysical on you. Not religious. Not even philosophical. I’m here to say that if you wish, you can see what I’m about to say in a spiritual way, but it's not a requirement. I’m here to say that it's all about fears, that if you know and learn about fears you'll know all that there's to be known about you and about man. I’m here to point the way to authenticity, and to point the way 'out of the woods.' You must do the heavy lifting and the walking yourself, because this is your journey. This is your life. This is your movie. I’m here to ultimately ask: at the end of this movie of yours, what is it going to be about? I’ve got three steps. I’ve got twelve insights. I’ve got ninety-two enumerated addendums to these insights. These insights and their addendums will propose a simpler, truer reality where you can be yourself fearlessly. I’ve got a book, Out of the Woods, that may save your life.
