Book We Need a Department of Peace

Download or read book We Need a Department of Peace written by William L. Benzon and published by . This book was released on 2016-07-01 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the prospect of a never-ending war on terror before us, the need for a Department of Peace in the federal government has never been more urgent. Bills for establishing one have been introduced to Congress throughout the twentieth century until today. The authors of this compelling book of essays contend that the costs of war always outweigh the benefits, even for the victors. They argue that the only way we're going to be able to stop fighting senseless wars is if we have a division of the federal government devoted every day to making peace. In We Need a Department of Peace readers learn the history of such a proposal through original documents and hear new arguments calling for such a department. The story begins in 1793 with "A Plan of a Peace-Office for the United States" by Benjamin Rush, one of the Founding Fathers and a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Frederick Schuman's "Why a Department of Peace?" makes the case for the creation of a Department of Peace and tells the story of twentieth century efforts through the late 1960s. Mary Liebman, a prominent activist, continues the legislative story into the 1970s. Finally, Charlie Keil's "Waging Peace" is a manifesto for the new millennium and his "Resolution for a Department of Peace" sets out the core legislative program in only one hundred fifty words.

This book was released on 2022-11-20 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live in a warring and conflicting world where peace is only discussed when chaos, conflicts, wars, and crises exist. Having looked around and realized the direction and approach we are using to curb war and discuss peace has become futile in most cases, I researched better ways to enhance a peaceful world. Peace is well defined with its benefits to every individual in our daily lives. The advantages of peace, how to maintain peace in our homes, communities, and places of work globally, and how to actualize personal peace are inclusive. The impact of war is vividly discussed, including its causes, disadvantages, what can be done to avoid war, and ways it can be achieved with stipulated measures. Several reasons as the causes, how to prevent it, and the aftermaths of war, were outlined, especially in African countries. This book will serve as a manual for peace education and personal use. Many books have been written about peace and war, but this is the most satisfactory literature that explains peace and war, as it has been confirmed and recommended by different peace educators. This is the revised edition, and it contains more advanced information, structures, and added facts to represent the global difficulties we are facing today caused by war and conflict. In this book, I explain many reasons why we need a ministry or department of peace in every country, as we have a ministry or department of defense. The ministry of peace should handle peace talks, initiate dialogue, truce, and parley. Most peace educators agree that the office should be permanent like all other ministries or departments in the government parastatals. Suppose we have a department or ministries of peace in our respective countries that will help peace talks and dialogue to be more effective. In that case, it should be headed by peace professionals who would help enhance a peaceful transformation rather than appointing inexperienced individuals to represent or initiate peace negotiations only when there`s war. More importantly, war should be the last resort when peace negotiations and dialogues have failed.

Book A History of Peace in Dayton Ohio

Download or read book A History of Peace in Dayton Ohio written by Tammy Newsom and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2015-10-19 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the Gem City is better known as the birthplace of aviation, Dayton has an impressive history of working toward peace. Generations of Daytonians worked passionately to create a nonviolent and welcoming community to inspire others. Abolitionists assisted escaped slaves from one Underground checkpoint to the next. Quakers peacefully abstained from war and chartered several colleges in the Dayton area. The Wright brothers invented the airplane to end all wars, and the landmark Dayton Peace Accords famously ended the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Author Tammy Newsom explores the inventiveness, compassion and courage of the men and women who have made Dayton a city of peace.

Book The Frontlines of Peace

Download or read book The Frontlines of Peace written by Severine Autesserre and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-02-01 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At turns surprising, funny, and gut-wrenching, this is the hopeful story of the ordinary yet extraordinary people who have figured out how to build lasting peace in their communities The word "peacebuilding" evokes a story we've all heard over and over: violence breaks out, foreign nations are scandalized, peacekeepers and million-dollar donors come rushing in, warring parties sign a peace agreement and, sadly, within months the situation is back to where it started--sometimes worse. But what strategies have worked to build lasting peace in conflict zones, particularly for ordinary citizens on the ground? And why should other ordinary citizens, thousands of miles away, care? In The Frontlines of Peace, Séverine Autesserre, award-winning researcher and peacebuilder, examines the well-intentioned but inherently flawed peace industry. With examples drawn from across the globe, she reveals that peace can grow in the most unlikely circumstances. Contrary to what most politicians preach, building peace doesn't require billions in aid or massive international interventions. Real, lasting peace requires giving power to local citizens. Now including teaching and book club discussion guides, The Frontlines of Peace tells the stories of the ordinary yet extraordinary individuals and organizations that are confronting violence in their communities effectively. One thing is clear: successful examples of peacebuilding around the world, in countries at war or at peace, have involved innovative grassroots initiatives led by local people, at times supported by foreigners, often employing methods shunned by the international elite. By narrating success stories of this kind, Autesserre shows the radical changes we must take in our approach if we hope to build lasting peace around us--whether we live in Congo, the United States, or elsewhere.

Book Blue Skies and the Dove of Peace

Download or read book Blue Skies and the Dove of Peace written by Mitchell W. Pezdek and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2024-02-09 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All of us experience times of joy and sorrow, times of success and failure, and times of doubt and certainty. In our lives on earth, we need to ask ourselves why we are here and what purpose does God have for us. Life is a journey. In my life, I have had the moments referred to, and my guiding light has been a belief in God and Jesus, his only begotten Son. I am not a priest or preacher, but I do have some experiences that each of you readers can relate to. My purpose in writing this autobiography is to tell you about them and hope that they will interest you and, if you need it, help you in troubled times. Modern times are truly testing all of us, and many people have turned away from God. This is a sad occurrence, and I pray that my book will convince some of you who have doubts that God does love us, cares about us, and will help us when he ask for it. God bless you, and I hope my journey will enrich your faith. Without that, we are like a ship sailing with no compass.
