Book We Should Hang Out Sometime

Download or read book We Should Hang Out Sometime written by Josh Sundquist and published by Hachette+ORM. This book was released on 2014-12-23 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Paralympic ski racer and YouTube star Josh Sundquist, comes an always-funny (and sometimes-awkward) memoir about teenage misadventures. When I was twenty-five years old, it came to my attention that I had never had a girlfriend. At the time, I was actually under the impression that I was in a relationship, so this bit of news came as something of a shock. Why was Josh still single? To find out, he tracked down each of the girls he had tried to date since middle school and asked them straight up: What went wrong? The results of Josh's semi-scientific investigation are in this book. From a disastrous Putt-Putt date involving a backward prosthetic foot, to his introduction to CFD (Close Fast Dancing), and a misguided "grand gesture" at a Miss America pageant, this story is about looking for love—or at least a girlfriend—in all the wrong places. Poignant, relatable, and totally hilarious, this memoir is for anyone who has ever wondered, "Is there something wrong with me?" (Spoiler Alert: the answer is no.)

Book Now Is the Time We Must Be Strong

Download or read book Now Is the Time We Must Be Strong written by George Van Vleet and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This story is based on the true experiences of Doris Roth Van Vleet during the war years between 1937 and 1947 in the Japanese occupied City of Shanghai, China. She is the narrator of this amazing story. The war between China and Japan had started and the Japanese soon occupied the territory surrounding the city of Shanghai. The United States Government moved all American citizens to the Philippine Islands until the conflict was resolved. Although the International Settlement was isolated, the Japanese made no attempt to occupy that section of the city so the family returned to their apartment. Life went on in a fairly normal manner but the war in Europe had started and the British military was leaving Shanghai to join their respective battle units, primarily in Hong Kong. Life in the city was becoming more difficult, but the United States maintained neutrality until the Fourth Marines departed on Nov.28th. On the morning of December 8, 1941 there were Japanese tanks on the streets of Shanghai. The Japanese ruled the city in a sort of benign way until the American air raid on Tokyo which triggered the Japanese military to move all Americans over the age of twelve to prison camps. Her father, older brother and sister were interned and Doris, her mother and brother were now alone. They soon realized how difficult it would be just to stay alive, but due to the tenacity and courage of Zina they managed to survive. If the war had lasted into the winter of 1945, they, and most of the people in Shanghai, would have starved to death. It was the dream of all to gain passage, a visa for Zina and move to America as quickly as possible. It took the remainder of 1945 and 1946 to meet that goal. For the first sixteen years of his life George lived in a logging camp, owned by his father, located in Northwest Oregon several miles from the town of Astoria. He graduated from Jewell Grade School with six other kids in his eighth grade class. He entered Grant High School, the largest in the state of Oregon at that time, with five hundred freshmen; it was a social shock to say the least. He still worked every summer as a logger until his enlistment in the U.S. Marines. His entire professional occupation, after military service and college, was in the timber business. His writing career began as a result of a torn Achilles tendon putting him down when he was encouraged to write short stories by his wife and a good friend. After a move to Eugene he decided to enter the creative writing school at the University of Oregon. Starting in a freshman class, at seventy nine years of age, was a real adventure. With help, support and much patience from all his family and friends he finished this book. He hopes you enjoy reading this story as much as he did writing it.

Dorothy was torn from her colourless world and thrown into the vibrant land of Oz. She was forced to make a journey and on the way found not only herself but a chosen family. The Scarecrow, Lion and Tinman went on a journey to find something that they had inside them all along. The Land of Oz and it's inhabitants have always had a very special place in my heart and have given me great comfort through hard times. It has inspired me to write this collection of poems that I hope you will enjoy.

Book Portraits of Old Russia

Download or read book Portraits of Old Russia written by Donald Ostrowski and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces readers to a little-known place and time in world history – early modern Russia, from its beginnings as Muscovy, in the fourteenth century, through the reign of Peter I (1689-1725) – by portraying the lives of representative individuals from the major levels of the society of that era. The portraits, written by professional historians, are imaginative reconstructions or composites of individual lives, rather than biographies. The portraits are arranged into socio-political categories, and include members of ruling families, government servitors, clerks, military personnel, church prelates, monks, provincial landowners, townspeople and artisans, Siberian explorers and traders, free peasants, serfs, slaves and holy fools. Using these portraits, the book brings old Russian society to life in an interesting way.

Book It s Not You

Download or read book It s Not You written by Sara Eckel and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2014-01-07 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Why am I still single?” If you’re single and searching, there’s no end to other people’s explanations, excuses, and criticism explaining why you haven’t found a partner: “You’re too picky. Just find a good-enough guy and you’ll be fine.” “You’re too desperate. If men think you need them, they’ll run scared.” “You’re too independent. Smart, ambitious women always have a harder time finding mates.” “You have low self-esteem. You can’t love someone else until you’ve learned to love yourself.” “You’re too needy. You can’t be happy in a relationship until you’ve learned to be happy on your own.” Based on one of the most popular Modern Love columns of the last decade, Sara Eckel’s It’s Not You challenges these myths, encouraging singletons to stop picking apart their personalities and to start tapping into their own wisdom about who and what is right for them. Supported by the latest psychological and sociological research, as well as interviews with people who have experienced longtime singledom, Eckel creates a strong and empowering argument to understand and accept that there’s no one reason why you’re single—you just are.

Download or read book Jefferson Square written by Noel B. Gerson and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2014-06-30 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jefferson Square was a multi-million dollar culture center…but there was nothing at all cultural about some of the things that happened there during its grand opening in the Sixties. At the Repertory Theater, a play called Confessional was in rehearsal. Some called it dramatic literature. Others considered it a tasteless exploitation of the playwright’s former marriage to America’s queen of sex. In the expensive interior of Symphony Hall, the brilliant and erratic conductor of the Jefferson Square Symphony Orchestra was working feverishly on a new concerto while his private life was rushing toward its own scandalous crescendo. In the board room, the dream of the state’s governor for a presidential nomination was interrupted by the discovery that Jefferson Square was making this rich man richer. And in the executive offices, where architects’ drawings were still being argued over, Jefferson Square’s recently hired cultural director was being tempted to destroy what he had been employed to hold together. Jefferson Square provides a fascinating glimpse of life behind the scenes in the midst of the creation of a new urban cultural epicenter, a symbol of the gentrification forcing out longtime neighborhood inhabitants. From the glitz and the glamor of Jefferson Square proper, to the hardships faced by residents of the condemned projects in the area, Gerson brings microcosms of the Sixties to Technicolor life.
