Book Nature s Machines

    Book Details:
  • Author : David E. Alexander
  • Publisher : Academic Press
  • Release : 2017-08-15
  • ISBN : 0128498978
  • Pages : 204 pages

Download or read book Nature s Machines written by David E. Alexander and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2017-08-15 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nature's Machines: An Introduction to Organismal Biomechanics presents the fundamental principles of biomechanics in a concise, accessible way while maintaining necessary rigor. It covers the central principles of whole-organism biomechanics as they apply across the animal and plant kingdoms, featuring brief, tightly-focused coverage that does for biologists what H. M. Frost's 1967 Introduction to Biomechanics did for physicians. Frequently encountered, basic concepts such as stress and strain, Young's modulus, force coefficients, viscosity, and Reynolds number are introduced in early chapters in a self-contained format, making them quickly available for learning and as a refresher. More sophisticated, integrative concepts such as viscoelasticity or properties of hydrostats are covered in the later chapters, where they draw on information from multiple earlier sections of the book. Animal and plant biomechanics is now a common research area widely acknowledged by organismal biologists to have broad relevance. Most of the day-to-day activities of an animal involve mechanical processes, and to the extent that organisms are shaped by adaptive evolution, many of those adaptations are constrained and channelized by mechanical properties. The similarity in body shape of a porpoise and a tuna is no coincidence. Many may feel that they have an intuitive understanding of many of the mechanical processes that affect animals and plants, but careful biomechanical analyses often yield counterintuitive results: soft, squishy kelp may be better at withstanding pounding waves during storms than hard-shelled mollusks; really small swimmers might benefit from being spherical rather than streamlined; our bones can operate without breaking for decades, whereas steel surgical implants exhibit fatigue failures in a few months if not fully supported by bone. - Offers organismal biologists and biologists in other areas a background in biomechanics to better understand the research literature and to explore the possibility of using biomechanics approaches in their own work - Provides an introductory presentation of the everyday mechanical challenges faced by animals and plants - Functions as recommended or required reading for advanced undergraduate biology majors taking courses in biomechanics, supplemental reading in a general organismal biology course, or background reading for a biomechanics seminar course

Book Electromagnetism for Engineers

Download or read book Electromagnetism for Engineers written by Andrew J. Flewitt and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2023-01-30 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electromagnetism for Engineers An easily accessible textbook to introduce the power of electromagnetism Electromagnetism can be a difficult subject to grasp and to teach. Much of what we take for granted in modern life is enabled by electromagnetic effects, but it isn’t always easy to understand the impact of electromagnetism compared to other areas of engineering, such as mechanics, which are more tangibly observed and felt. Although electromagnetism is a crucial and important branch of physics with elegant mathematics, many students can find the study of electromagnetism inaccessible. It is crucial for students of electrical and electronic engineering and physics to have a strong understanding of electromagnetism and how it impacts communications, power generation and transmission, semiconductor devices, motors, and more. Electromagnetism for Engineers aims to develop a student’s understanding of electromagnetism in the context of real effects and how they apply to such applications, whilst maintaining the sophistication of the mathematics that can be used to give deeper insight. It begins by describing the fundamentals of electromagnetism before a more detailed discussion of the basic concepts developed for specific application areas. It then considers the application of electromagnetism to transmission lines, antennas, and waveguides. Electromagnetism for Engineers readers will find: A unique approach that illustrates the link between real-life applications and fundamental theory of electromagnetism Clear, concise language to help students gain a full understanding of the subject Carefully designed figures to illustrate points throughout the book Accompanying website at www.wiley.com/go/flewitt1418 Electromagnetism for Engineers has been written as a textbook for undergraduates studying electronic or electrical engineering. The manual can also be of interest to physics students and to graduate-level students desirous of having a general book on electromagnetism. It is also a useful reference for professional engineers looking for a refresher on the fundamentals of electromagnetism.

Book Stone Plaster and Stars

Download or read book Stone Plaster and Stars written by Suja Ravilla Ramana Ramana and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2011-02-11 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stone, Plaster, and Stars offers the insightful memoir of author and dentist Dr. Suja Ravilla Ramana. Charmingly blending dental practice with the world and the universe outside of dentistry, it uses anecdotal humor to transform dentistry into an entertaining enterprise. Ramana traces her own journey, from her time as a rebellious teenager who turns up her nose at the profession only to find that it might be the way out of an identity crisis. She provides a glimpse into indigenous connotations, aiming to tickle the curiosity and imagination of others. It offers an inspired cosmic perspective that has been woven into real-life events through years in college, marriage to a neurosurgeon, and establishment of her practice. The narrative captures images of the conflicting challenges of youth and conformity, of growing up and independent thinking, and of professional choices and finding a niche in the cosmic universe. Many of the events described here are real, and some of the people were inspired from the world of dentistry. Stone, Plaster, and Stars offers a ringside view of the world from her corner of it.
