Book excerpt: Jennifer Jeffries, a young Texan traveling in London, is kidnapped, becoming the victim of a violent assault. When she survives, the British detective in charge of her case needs her to testify against the serial killer who attacked her. Led by a tough ex-Special Forces sergeant with a warrior's mindset, her witness protection team tries to support her as she prepares to appear in one of London's Crown Courts. This British detective suspense novel moves from a realistic depiction of the female protagonist's PTSD to fast-paced courtroom scenes to the difficulties that traumatized individuals face as they struggle to regain personal power. The Witness breaks new ground by showing the enduring effects trauma can have on a life. The first of a trilogy, this work of crime suspense fiction contains the same psychological intensity as Anna Quindlen's Black and Blue, but while Ms. Quindlen's protagonist endures, Ms. Kryske's triumphs. Strong, complex male characters make this novel an entertaining, inspiring, and compelling read.
Download or read book Witness written by Kitty Nolan and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2016-11-10 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I set about writing this book after a period of time working to raise the issue of gender-based violence with my own church. The more I researched, the more aware I became that very few published accounts from survivors of gender-based violence (GBV) were available. Each time I gave a talk on gender-based violence, several people would speak to me about someone they knew who had lived with this type of violence, and others would talk about their own situations of abuse. Womens aid organizations have published a lot of excellent material, including a few anthologies of poetry and prose written by survivors. I wanted to write a book giving a survivors account, which also included a view from the onlookera sister, a friend, a doctor, a sister-in-lawso those living the experience know they are not alone, so those who have survived can hear an echo of their experience, and so those who are interested in trying to understand the reality of living with gender-based violence can begin to walk a while in the GBV survivors shoes.

Download or read book The Art of Inventing Hope written by Howard Reich and published by Chicago Review Press. This book was released on 2019-05-07 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Art of Inventing Hope offers an unprecedented, in-depth conversation between the world's most revered Holocaust survivor, Elie Wiesel, and a son of survivors, Howard Reich. During the last four years of Wiesel's life, he met frequently with Reich in New York, Chicago and Florida—and spoke with him often on the phone—to discuss the subject that linked them: Reich's father, Robert Reich, and Wiesel were both liberated from the Buchenwald death camp on April 11, 1945. What had started as an interview assignment from the Chicago Tribune quickly evolved into a friendship and a partnership. Reich and Wiesel believed their colloquy represented a unique exchange between two generations deeply affected by a cataclysmic event. Wiesel said to Reich, "I've never done anything like this before," and after reading the final book, asked him not to change a word. Here Wiesel—at the end of his life—looks back on his ideas and writings on the Holocaust, synthesizing them in his conversations with Reich. The insights on life, ethics, and memory that Wiesel offers and Reich illuminates will not only help the children and grandchildren of Holocaust survivors understand their painful inheritance, but will benefit everyone, young or old.
Download or read book The Soul Winning Church written by J.A. Medders and published by The Good Book Company. This book was released on 2024-08-15 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discover how your church can be truly excited about evangelism and reach out effectively. Your church's sermons often include a call to evangelize. You've held evangelism training events. You give out invites to your Christmas and Easter services. So… where are all the new Christians? Is your church actually reaching the lost with the gospel? For many of us, despite having the best intentions our churches struggle to reach out with the gospel effectively. J.A. Medders and Doug Logan, Jr. have decades of experience in leading churches and mentoring pastors, and here they outline six principles for cultivating a genuine evangelistic culture throughout your church. Includes case studies from a variety of different cultures and contexts to give you practical ideas for implementing these six principles. There are also free resources available, including a podcast series, that will help church leaders to implement the principles they learn in the book. Foreword from Paul Tripp.
Download or read book Beyond Four Walls written by Michael D. O'Neil and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-08-12 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The church today is in many places “on the nose.” For many people, it stinks. It has passed its “use-by” date and should be relegated to the dustbins of history, and the sooner, the better. Nevertheless, the contributors to this volume believe that the church, in spite of its somewhat checkered history and its many present failures, remains an integral part of God’s redemptive purposes being worked out in the world, and that God’s call to the church is now what it has always been: to be the faithful people of God, bearing joy-filled witness to the resurrection of Jesus Christ in word, worship, and work, in its corporate life, and in the lives of each of its members. Each chapter in this book explores an aspect of what it means to be the church, both with respect to its own life, and with an eye to its presence and mission in the world.
