Download or read book Environmental Apocalypse in Science and Art written by Sergio Fava and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why are climate mitigation and adaptation failing? This book situates climate policy in the cultural history of future-prediction practices. Tracing relations between modelling, epistemology, politics, food security, religion, art and the apocalyptic, its case studies examine how different modes of representing nature and imagining futures are catalysts or obstacles for immediate action.
Download or read book Dictionary of Global Climate Change written by W.J. Maunder and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate, climate change, climate fluctuations and climatic trends are only a few of the terms used today, in not only conferences, scientific symposia and workshops, but also parliaments and in discussions throughout society. To climatologists these terms may be well known; to the vast majority of people, however, they are new, and they require definition and explanation. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) inherited an interest and involvement in the studies of climate and climate change from its predecessor, the International Meteorological Organization (IMo), which was established in 1873. By 1929 the IMO had set up a Commission for Climatology to deal with matters related to climate studies. When, in 1950, the World Meteorological Organization assumed the mantle of the IMO, it retained the commission which, among other responsibilities, had already recognized the need for the definition and explana tion of terms used in climatology. It must also be said that much of what we now know about climate derives from the scientific and technical programmes co ordinated by IMO and now, to a much greater extent, by WMO. In 1979, the First World Climate Conference made an assessment of the status of knowledge of climate and climate variability, and recommended the establishment of a World Climate Programme. This recommendation was fully endorsed by the Eighth World Meteorological Congress, and the World Climate Programme was subse quently established by WMO in co-operation with the International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

Download or read book Forests Water and People in the Humid Tropics written by M. Bonell and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-12-17 with total page 970 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forests, Water and People in the Humid Tropics is a comprehensive review of the hydrological and physiological functioning of tropical rain forests, the environmental impacts of their disturbance and conversion to other land uses, and optimum strategies for managing them. The book brings together leading specialists in such diverse fields as tropical anthropology and human geography, environmental economics, climatology and meteorology, hydrology, geomorphology, plant and aquatic ecology, forestry and conservation agronomy. The editors have supplemented the individual contributions with invaluable overviews of the main sections and provide key pointers for future research. Specialists will find authenticated detail in chapters written by experts on a whole range of people-water-land use issues, managers and practitioners will learn more about the implications of ongoing and planned forest conversion, while scientists and students will appreciate a unique review of the literature.
Download or read book Seasonal Climate Forecasting and Managing Risk written by Alberto Troccoli and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-01-29 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally formed around a set of lectures presented at a NATO Advanced Study Institute (ASI), this book has grown to become organised and presented rather more as a textbook than as a standard "collection of proceedings". This therefore is the first unified reference ‘textbook’ in seasonal to interannual climate predictions and their practical uses. Written by some of the world’s leading experts, the book covers a rapidly-developing science of prime social concern.
Download or read book Climate Observations written by Peter Domonkos and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2022-11-15 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate Observations: Data Quality Control and Time Series Homogenization pulls together the different phases of the production of high-quality climatic datasets, allowing interested readers to obtain a coherent picture on the complexity and importance of this task. There are several new methods of time series homogenization, each very complex and fast developing. The thematic discussion of the production of high quality climatic datasets provides the opportunity to reduce errors, including the careful installation of meteorological instruments, the application of strict observing rules and inspections, and the use of sophistically developed statistical software to detect and remove errors or biases. This book is intended for professionals working on climate data management at the national meteorological services, for the users of observed climatic data, and for students and researchers studying atmospheric and climate science. Members of the Royal Meteorological Society are eligible for a 35% discount on all Developments in Weather and Climate Science series titles. See the RMetS member dashboard for the discount code. - Describes the research tasks and tools for which the reliability and accuracy of climatic data is particularly important - Includes case studies to provide real-world context to the research presented in the book - Features benchmark datasets that have been used for testing the stable operation and efficiency of homogenization methods - Explains the use of semiautomatic quality control software, recently developed effective homogenization methods, their testing, and related new concepts and statistical tools
