The country fetes its successful students : from class X to board toppers and those who 'crack the IIT JEE' to those who clear the civil- services examination. Yet things on the ground are dire. About 70 per cent of all students ( in villages, towns and cities) have to make do with inferior schooling. Metropolitan newspapers are full of the difficulty of getting a nursery seat in a good school. And while there is a seat crunch in the better colleges too, only 10 per cent of all students between the ages of 18 and 21 are enrolled in college. Crores of educated Indians discover too late that they do not have the skills to land a suitable job. Y.S. Rajan examines the gamut of issues involved in India's efforts to educate its young people and the work required to fix schools, vocational training centres, colleges and universities. He argues that Indian education needs reforms on a scale comparable to those which freed the economy of the shackles of the licence-permit raj almost twenty years ago.

Huff, a court case that challenged the employment of nearly 150 Catholic sisters in public schools across New Mexico in 1948. Known nationally as the "Dixon case," after one of the towns involved, it was the most famous in a series of midcentury lawsuits, all targeting what opponents provocatively dubbed "captive schools." Spearheaded by Protestants and Other Americans United for Separation of Church and State, the publicity campaign built around Zellers drew on centuries-old rhetoric of Catholic captivity to remind Americans about the threat of Catholic power in the post-War era, and the danger Catholic sisters dressed in full habits posed to American education. Americans at midcentury were reckoning with the U.S. Supreme Court's new mandate for a "wall of separation" between church and state. At no time since the nation's founding was the Establishment Clause studied so carefully by the nation's judiciary and its people. While Zellers never reached the Supreme Court, its details were familiar to hundreds of thousands of citizens who read about them in magazines and heard them discussed in church on Sunday mornings. For many Americans, Catholic and not, the scenario of sisters in veils teaching children embodied the high stakes of the era's church-state conflicts, and became an occasion to assess the implications of separation in their lives. Through close study of the Dixon case, Kathleen Holscher brings together the perspectives of legal advocacy groups, Catholic sisters, and citizens who cared about their schools. She argues that the captive school crusade was a transitional episode in the Protestant-Catholic conflicts that dominate American church-state history. Religious Lessons also goes beyond legal discourse to consider the interests of Americans--women religious included--who did not formally articulate convictions about the separation principle. The book emphasizes the everyday experiences, inside and outside classrooms, that defined the church-state relationship for these people, and that made these constitutional questions relevant to them.

Book excerpt: The Chalice of Limerick is a historical novel about a dark period in the history of the people of Ireland leading up to the penal times (1695–1829) and its aftermath. It is a story of audaciousness and resilience. It shows the tenacity of a people of deep faith, willing to make extraordinary sacrifices during the seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth centuries. An estimated one million people died during the Great Famine which could have been avoided. Another two million migrated in search of a better life. The Great Famine was caused by a blight on the potato crop which extended for three years. In the laws of nature, any given crop can fail. The Irish people forced by oppression had become dependent on one crop. The population of Ireland at the time of the Great Famine was estimated at eight million. Yet the country was exporting enough food to feed twelve million. Our gratitude goes to the political leaders who rose to bring about change. Daniel O'Connell was responsible for the passage of the Catholic Emancipation Act 1829. The Land League was formed in 1878 to help struggling tenant farmers. It also sought to end landlordism. Charles Steward Parnell led the Irish Parliamentary Party (1888–1891). There were several people who gave their lives in martyrdom for their faith. The archbishop of Armagh, Oliver Plunkett, was executed on July 1, 1681. He was declared a saint by Pope Paul VI in 1975. He is the patron saint of peace and reconciliation. Bishop Turlough O'Brien, bishop of Limerick, was executed in October 1851 following the Siege of Limerick. Forty-nine Catholics from County Roscommon protested their loss of "due liberties" as citizens of Ireland and were executed for treason. Seventeen of these were beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1992.
