Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells the story of the power generation gas turbine from the perspective of one of the leading companies in the field over a period of nearly 100 years, written by an engineer. Especially in times of imminent global economic crises it appears to be worthwhile to reflect on real economic values based on engineering ingenuity and enduring management of technological leadership. Though the book is primarily designed as a technical history of the BBC/ABB/Alstom power generation gas turbines, its scope is sufficiently broad to cover general development trends, including parallel competitor activities. A special benefit is the historical breakdown to the gas turbine component level, so that the book actually outlines the development of axial compressors from early beginnings, the progress in combustion technology towards extraordinary low emission values and that of axial turbines with special emphasis on early turbine cooling innovations. The sheer length of certain engineering developments over several decades allows interesting historic observations and deductions on inherent business mechanisms, the effects of technology preparations and organisational consequences. A look into the mirror of the past provides revelations on the impact of far-reaching business decisions. 2017 Winner of the Historian Engineer Award of the ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers

Book Wave rotor enhanced Gas Turbine Engine Demonstrator

Download or read book Wave rotor enhanced Gas Turbine Engine Demonstrator written by Gerard E. Welch and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Army Research Laboratory, NASA Glenn Research Center, and Rolls-Royce Allison are working collaboratively to demonstrate the benefits and viability of a wave-rotor-topped gas turbine engine. The self-cooled wave rotor is predicted to increase the engine overall pressure ratio and peak temperature by 300% and 25 to 30%, respectively, providing substantial improvements in engine efficiency and specific power. Such performance improvements would significantly reduce engine emissions and the fuel logistics trails of armed forces. Progress towards a planned demonstration of a wave-rotor-topped Rolls-Royce Allison model 250 engine has included completion of the preliminary design and layout of the engine, the aerodynamic design of the wave rotor component and prediction of its aerodynamic performance characteristics in on- and off-design operation and during transients, and the aerodynamic design of transition ducts between the wave rotor and the high pressure turbine. The topping cycle increases the burner entry temperature and poses a design challenge to be met in the development of the demonstrator engine.

Download or read book Wave Rotor Demonstrator Engine Assessment written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07-17 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of the program was to determine a wave rotor demonstrator engine concept using the Allison 250 series engine. The results of the NASA LERC wave rotor effort were used as a basis for the wave rotor design. A wave rotor topped gas turbine engine was identified which incorporates five basic requirements of a successful demonstrator engine. Predicted performance maps of the wave rotor cycle were used along with maps of existing gas turbine hardware in a design point study. The effects of wave rotor topping on the engine cycle and the subsequent need to rematch compressor and turbine sections in the topped engine were addressed. Comparison of performance of the resulting engine is made on the basis of wave rotor topped engine versus an appropriate baseline engine using common shaft compressor hardware. The topped engine design clearly demonstrates an impressive improvement in shaft horsepower (+11.4%) and SFC (-22%). Off design part power engine performance for the wave rotor topped engine was similarly improved including that at engine idle conditions. Operation of the engine at off design was closely examined with wave rotor operation at less than design burner outlet temperatures and rotor speeds. Challenges identified in the development of a demonstrator engine are discussed. A preliminary design was made of the demonstrator engine including wave rotor to engine transition ducts. Program cost and schedule for a wave rotor demonstrator engine fabrication and test program were developed. Snyder, Philip H. Glenn Research Center...

Book Passage Averaged Description of Wave Rotor Flow

Download or read book Passage Averaged Description of Wave Rotor Flow written by Gerard E. Welch and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The unsteady flow within wave rotor passages is influenced by the rotor blade, hub, and tip shroud surface profiles. By averaging from hub to shroud and from blade to blade, a reduced set of the governing equations is obtained that is appropriate for design studies and parametric analyses. The application of these equations requires closure models for force integrals and for correlation terms that arise when the density averages of products of the flow field variables are expanded in terms of products of the density-averaged variables. The force integrals and the correlation terms depend on the instantaneous pitchwise and spanwise flow field distributions established by unsteadiness relative to the rotor, flow turning induced by blade, hub, and tip-shroud profiling, and rotation. Two approaches to model the force integrals are described. The influence of relative unsteadiness and flow turning on the correlation terms is discussed by considering the propagation of gas dynamic waves in rotor passages defined by uncambered, staggered blades and by unstaggered, cambered blades.

Book Brittle Materials Design High Temperature Gas Turbine Volume 2 Ceramic Turbine Rotor Technology

Download or read book Brittle Materials Design High Temperature Gas Turbine Volume 2 Ceramic Turbine Rotor Technology written by Arthur F. McLean and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The progress in the last nine months on ERDA supported programs within the joint DARPA/ERDA supported 'Brittle Materials Design, High Temperature Gas Turbine' Program is reported on in this volume. Volume 1 covers the progress on the DARPA supported Ceramic Turbine Testing Program. Investigations of the materials used to fabricate duo-density ceramic turbine rotors were conducted on injection molded reaction bonded and hot pressed silicon nitride. The injection molding process, utilized to fabricate rotor blade rings, was improved by optimizing the molding parameters with the automated control system and improving the molding mixture. The installation of nozzles, to apply mold release, and air blast jets, to clean the die and evenly distribute the mold release, resulted in a noticeable improvement in the surface finish of the blade rings. Duo-density turbine rotors were tested in the cold spin pit to evaluate the hot press to reaction sintered bond joints and the effect of I.D. voids, in the blade ring rim, on blade failure speeds. Degradation of the room temperature strength of the reaction bonded silicon nitride rotor blades was identified as resulting from the press-bonding operation. A procedure for determining whether statistically significant differences exist between two sets of data, known as the 'Hypothesis Testing' was outlined. The test was applied to data from duo-density turbine rotors and showed that blade strength did deteriorate after the press-bonding operation. Use of proof-testing as a means of enhancing the accuracy of life predictions was discussed.
