Book Wave Reflection and Transmission at Permeable Breakwaters

Download or read book Wave Reflection and Transmission at Permeable Breakwaters written by Charles K. Sollitt and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rubble mound breakwaters are designed to protect exposed marine areas from excessive wave activity. Observations of breakwaters inter-acting with surface waves in laboratory models and in full-scale field applications demonstrate that significant wave energy is transmitted through the interstices of structures commonly regarded as impervious. The objective of this investigation is the development of a theoretical analysis to account for this phenomenon. Three breakwater configurations are considered: (1) crib style breakwaters with vertical walls and homogeneous fill, (2) conventional trapezoidal shape breakwaters with layered fill, and (3) pile array breakwaters composed of vertical piles placed in symmetric patterns. The two dimensional problem is studied. Waves are assumed to arrive at normal incidence. (Author).

Book Coastal Engineering Waves Beaches Wave Structure Interactions

Download or read book Coastal Engineering Waves Beaches Wave Structure Interactions written by T. Sawaragi and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1995-04-11 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The science and technology of coastal and ocean engineering are closely related to harbour and fishery engineering, because they share a common basic knowledge. However, whereas various publications of coastal engineering, harbour engineering, and ocean engineering have described just the knowledge in their own respective fields, an interrelated and systematic presentation linking them together has yet to be attempted. This book is the first attempt to systematically combine the fields of coastal, ocean, harbour, and fishery engineering from an engineering viewpoint backed by hydrodynamics. Understanding the interaction of waves with structures and sediment, and predicting the associated responses of interest, underlie nearly every problem in coastal and ocean engineering. This is precisely the goal of this book. Although primarily intended for use as a special textbook for graduate students and senior practising engineers, it is hoped that this book will also serve as a useful reference and assist in the further development of this field. With these objectives in mind, each chapter deals with important problems to be solved in the near future. The references included in each chapter should aid students and practising engineers in further broadening their knowledge. This book is the English translation of the original Japanese version published in May, 1991, commemorating the author's retirement from Osaka University. ``Elsevier will be named copyright holder of the English translated publication of the Work. This grant by Gihodo Publishers Ltd. (GP) only pertains to the English language version of the Work and no other rights, except to publish the Work in the English language, are granted to Elsevier Science (ES) by GP, which is acknowledged by ES to be the original copyright holder in the Work.''

Book Numerical Modeling of Water Waves

Download or read book Numerical Modeling of Water Waves written by Pengzhi Lin and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2008-04-30 with total page 499 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modelling large-scale wave fields and their interaction with coastal and offshore structures has become much more feasible over the last two decades with increases in computer speeds. Wave modelling can be viewed as an extension of wave theory, a mature and widely published field, applied to practical engineering through the use of computer tools. Information about the various wave models which have been developed is often widely scattered in the literature, and consequently this is one of the first books devoted to wave models and their applications. At the core of the book is an introduction to various types of wave models. For each model, the theoretical assumptions, the application range, and the advantages and limitations are elaborated. The combined use of different wave models from large-scale to local-scale is highlighted with a detailed discussion of the application and matching of boundary conditions. At the same time the book provides a grounding in hydrodynamics, wave theory, and numerical methods which underlie wave modelling. It presents the theoretical background and also shows how to use these models for achieving different engineering tasks, illustrated and reinforced with case study examples.
