Book excerpt: The Twenty-Second Symposium on Naval Hydrodynamics was held in Washington, D.C., from August 9-14, 1998. It coincided with the 100th anniversary of the David Taylor Model Basin. This international symposium was organized jointly by the Office of Naval Research (Mechanics and Energy Conversion S&T Division), the National Research Council (Naval Studies Board), and the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division (David Taylor Model Basin). This biennial symposium promotes the technical exchange of naval research developments of common interest to all the countries of the world. The forum encourages both formal and informal discussion of the presented papers, and the occasion provides an opportunity for direct communication between international peers.

Book Numerical Methods for Seakeeping Problems

Download or read book Numerical Methods for Seakeeping Problems written by Bettar O. el Moctar and published by Springer. This book was released on 2021-02-18 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book describes currently applied and newly developed advanced numerical methods for wave-induced ship motions and loads. Besides well-established computational methods based on strip theory, panel methods and finite volume methods for unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations (URANS), recent advances like a fully nonlinear Rankine panel method, URANS calculations including elastic hull deformations, and an improved method to predict added resistance in waves are explained in detail. Furthermore, statistical methods to assess extreme motions and loads are described both for linear and nonlinear responses in a stationary seaway as well as during long-term ship operations. Results of motions and loads, computed using the various methods, are compared with each other and with results of model experiments. Introductory chapters on fluid dynamics, motions of rigid and elastic ship hulls, numerical methods to compute fluid flows associated with wind waves, and the development and simulation of seaways complement the volume. The book will be of interest to post-graduate students, PhD candidates, as well as engineers in the field of naval architecture, ocean, and marine engineering.

Book Twenty Third Symposium on Naval Hydrodynamics

Download or read book Twenty Third Symposium on Naval Hydrodynamics written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 1024 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Vive la Revolution!" was the theme of the Twenty-Third Symposium on Naval Hydrodynamics held in Val de Reuil, France, from September 17-22, 2000 as more than 140 experts in ship design, construction, and operation came together to exchange naval research developments. The forum encouraged both formal and informal discussion of presented papers, and the occasion provides an opportunity for direct communication between international peers. This book includes sixty-three papers presented at the symposium which was organized jointly by the Office of Naval Research, the National Research Council (Naval Studies Board), and the Bassin d'Essais des Carènes. This book includes the ten topical areas discussed at the symposium: wave-induced motions and loads, hydrodynamics in ship design, propulsor hydrodynamics and hydroacoustics, CFD validation, viscous ship hydrodynamics, cavitation and bubbly flow, wave hydrodynamics, wake dynamics, shallow water hydrodynamics, and fluid dynamics in the naval context.

Book Evaluation and verification of computer calculations of wave induced ship structural loads

Download or read book Evaluation and verification of computer calculations of wave induced ship structural loads written by Paul Kaplan and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analytical method for the determination of conventional merchant ship motions and wave-induced moments in a seaway is developed. Both vertical and lateral plane motions and loads are considered for a ship travelling at any heading in regular waves and in irregular long or short crested seas. Strip Theory is used in vertical, lateral and rolling oscillation modes. The coupled equations of motion are linear, and the superposition principle is used for statistical response calculations in irregular seas. All three primary ship hull loadings are determined, i.e. vertical bending, lateral bending and torsional moments, as well as shear forces, at any point along the length, with these responses only representing the low frequency slowly varying wave loads directly induced by the waves. Book Experimental Determination of Wave excited Forces and Moments Acting on a Ship Model Running in Oblique Regular Waves

Download or read book Experimental Determination of Wave excited Forces and Moments Acting on a Ship Model Running in Oblique Regular Waves written by Young Chey and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The wave-excited forces and moments acting on a restrained Series 60 (C sub b = 0.60) ship model advancing at constant speed in regular oblique waves were experimentally determined. The oscillatory components and steady mean components of sway force, yaw moment, heave force, and pitch moment are presented in nondimensional coefficients, and their phases are given. The forces and moments vary little with forward speed of the model. The mean component of the forces or moments, in some cases, amounts to a fairly large portion of the oscillatory forces or moments. The experimental results are compared with available theoretical results. (Author).
