Book Wave Forces on a Circular Pile Due to Eddy Shedding

Download or read book Wave Forces on a Circular Pile Due to Eddy Shedding written by Devidas Datatraia Bidde and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ocean waves exert 'lift' (i.e., transverse) forces on piles under some circumstances in addition to the longitudinal forces. The lift forces are related to the formation and shedding of eddies. The report describes the results of a hydraulic laboratory study to establish the conditions under which the lift forces achieve significant magnitude compared to longitudinal forces. The lift forces were found to be as great as 60% of the longitudinal forces. The Keulegan-Carpenter number is found to be a reasonable parameter to determine the regime in which eddies form, and to be related to the ratio of the lift to longitudinal forces. Eddies form in the 'lee' of a vertical cylindrical pile subject to water waves when the Keulegan-Carpenter number has a value of about 3. For higher Keulegan-Carpenter numbers two eddies are developed and shed and the lift force is more or less regular with a frequency twice the frequency of the waves. For further increase in the Keulegan-Carpenter number turbulence develops and the lift forces show a random pattern. The ratio of the lift to the longitudinal forces appears to be at a maximum for a Keulegan-Carpenter number of about 15. Results of spectral anslyses of irregular waves and lift forces using Fast Fourier Transform techniques are presented. (Author).

Book Wave Forces on Circular Cylindrical Piles Used in Coastal Structures

Download or read book Wave Forces on Circular Cylindrical Piles Used in Coastal Structures written by Yüan Jen and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laboratory studies were made on a 6-inch diameter circular pile, using both regular and irregular waves. Detailed force analyses were made of both sets of data. Harmonic analyses of the total horizontal force acting on a pile was made in order to examine carefully the mass coefficient and drag coefficient. An attempt was made to relate these coefficients to certain dimensionless parameters. Dimensional analysis showed that the coefficients depended not only upon Reynolds number, Froude number, and Iversen's modulus, but also upon the water depth-wave length ratio d/L and the time parameter t/T. Book Vortex Shedding and Resistance in Harmonic Flow about Smooth and Rough Circular Cylinders at High Reynolds Numbers

Download or read book Vortex Shedding and Resistance in Harmonic Flow about Smooth and Rough Circular Cylinders at High Reynolds Numbers written by Turgut Sarpkaya and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the results on an extensive experimental investigation of the in-line and transverse forces acting on smooth and rough circular cylinders placed in oscillatory water flow at Reynolds numbers up to 700,000, Keulegan-Carpenter numbers up to 150, and relative roughnesses from 0.002 to 0.02. The drag and inertia coefficients have been determined through the use of the Fourier analysis and the least-squares method. The transverse force (lift) has been analyzed in terms of its maximum, semi-peak-to-peak, and root-mean-square values. In addition, the frequency of vortex shedding and the Strouhal number have been determined.

Book Advances in Hydroscience

Download or read book Advances in Hydroscience written by Ven Te Chow and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Hydroscience, Volume 8, provides an overview of the state of knowledge in hydroscience. The book contains six chapters and opens with a study on seiches—a phenomenon that frequently occurs in large enclosed bodies of water and that can result in serious destruction of shore structures and bring sudden death to innocent swimmers. This phenomenon bears certain resemblances to the tsunamis and storm surges over the open sea. Subsequent chapters deal with the basic principles underlying the techniques in isotope hydrology; statistical models for ocean waves and wave forces; fluvial sediment transport; impulsive waves; and channel networks. This contribution will prove particularly useful to hydrologists, since most work in this field has been done by physicists or other non-hydrologists.

Book IUTAM Symposium on Integrated Modeling of Fully Coupled Fluid Structure Interactions Using Analysis Computations and Experiments

Download or read book IUTAM Symposium on Integrated Modeling of Fully Coupled Fluid Structure Interactions Using Analysis Computations and Experiments written by Haym Benaroya and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This plenary paper and the accompanying presentation have highlighted field problems involving fluid-structure interaction over a wide span of Navy operations. Considering the vast size and versatility of the Navy's inventory, the cases presented represent examples of a much larger problem. But even this limited set provides sufficient evidence that fluid-structure interaction does hinder the Navy's ability to accomplish its missions. This survey has also established that there are no accurate and generally applicable design tools for addressing these problems. In the majority of cases the state-of-practice is to either make ad-hoc adjustments and estimates based on historical evidence, or conduct expensive focused tests directed at each specific problem and/or candidate solution. Unfortunately, these approaches do not provide insight into the fundamental problem, and neither can be considered reliable regarding their likelihood of success. So the opportunities for applying computational fluid-structure interaction modeling to Navy problems appear limitless. Scenarios range from the "simple" resonant strumming of underwater and in-air cables, to the "self-contained" flow field and vibration of aircraft/ordnance bodies at various Mach numbers, to violent underwater transient detonations and local hull structural collapse. Generally applicable and computationally tractable design-oriented models for these phenomena are of course still far in the future. But the Navy has taken the first steps in that direction by sponsoring specialized numerical models, validation experiments tailored for specific applications, and conferences such as this one.
