Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Watson's Magazine, Vol. 22: March, 1916 Walter Raymond had married for love, and, in spite of the hardships which his marriage had entailed, he had never regretted it. The nineteen years which had passed since he had refused to obey his father, who commanded him to take another woman for his wife, had been, on the whole, very happy. But for his wife's deli cate health, and the smallness of his means, scarcely a cloud had appeared in the sky. Even when he thought of what might have been if he had obeyed his father, he did not repent. For he felt that his father had been harsh and unreasonable. He was a rich man, who seemed to believe in little else than the power of riches; therefore his great desire concerning his only son Walter was that he should marry a rich wife. Such a one he had chosen for him. But walter had learnt to love another, and, threaten as old Walter Raymond might, he could not alter his boy's decision. Book Traditional Musicians of the Central Blue Ridge

Download or read book Traditional Musicians of the Central Blue Ridge written by Marty McGee and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2016-04-07 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Central Blue Ridge, taking in the mountainous regions of northwestern North Carolina and southwestern Virginia, is well known for its musical traditions. Long recognized as one of the richest repositories of folksong in the United States, the Central Blue Ridge has also been a prolific source of commercial recording, starting in 1923 with Henry Whitter's "hillbilly" music and continuing into the 21st century with such chart-topping acts as James King, Ronnie Bowman and Doc Watson. Unrivaled in tradition, unequaled in acclaim and unprecedented in influence, the Central Blue Ridge can claim to have contributed to the musical landscape of Americana as much as or more than any other region in the United States. This reference work--part of McFarland's continuing series of Contributions to Southern Appalachian Studies--provides complete biographical and discographical information on more than 75 traditional recording (major commercial label) artists who are natives of or lived mostly in the northwestern North Carolina counties of Alleghany, Ashe, Avery, Surry, Watauga and Wilkes, and the southwestern Virginia counties of Carroll and Grayson. Primary recordings as well as appearances on anthologies are included in the discographies. A chronological overview of the music is provided in the Introduction, and the Foreword is by the celebrated musician Bobby Patterson, founder of the Mountain and Heritage record labels.

Book The Bahamas in American History

Download or read book The Bahamas in American History written by Keith Tinker and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-11-30 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THIS BOOK EXPLORES the many complex historical connections between the UNited States of America and the Commonwealth of The Bahamas. Beginning with an overview of shared early Spanish colonization, the book is the first attempt to provide a comprehensive study of the impact of the sequential development of the United States on events in the emerging Bahamas, placing the heretofore marginalized history of the island nation firmly into the orbit of Atlantic historiographical literature. Among other things, the books sheds light on the role played by the islands in a series of significant events in the U.S. history. These include the American Revolution, in which four of the initial official military actions of the fledgling U.S. Navy comprised repeated invasions of British-controlled Nassau, capital of the Bahamas; the American Civil War during which Nassau became on of the main bases for supply of vital goods and ammunition to the Confederacy; the intrigues of the Volstead Act, which legislated prohibition but also caused the temporary transformation of Bahama ISlands into major transshipment centers for the smuggling of alcoholic beverages to a multitude of prohibition-defiant and "thirsty" Americans; and the significant role placed by Bahamian migrants in the creation of the city of Miami and other areas of south Florida. The author draws on a wealth of tapped and untapped primary sources and presents a new perspective on the "Bahamian experience" that helped to define the self-proclaimed American credo of "Manifest Destiny."
