Book Watershed Management Contributions to Land Stewardship a Literature Review

Download or read book Watershed Management Contributions to Land Stewardship a Literature Review written by Jr Malchus B Baker and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2012-10-22 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effectiveness of land stewardship must be enhanced to meet a growing population's need for conservation, sustainable development, and use of natural resources. Ecosystem-based, multiple-use oriented land stewardship is necessary when considering the present and future uses of land, water, and other natural resources on an operationally efficient scale. Holistically planned and carefully implemented watershed management practices and programs will always be needed to meet the increasing demands for commodities and amenities, clear water, open space, and uncluttered landscapes. An international conference was held in Tucson, Arizona, on March 13 to 16, 2000, to examine this need. The primary purpose of the conference was to increase people's awareness of the contributions that watershed management can make to future land stewardship in the United States and internationally. Invited synthesis papers were presented by 35 speakers from research institutes, management agencies, and educational organizations in the United States and internationally. More than 50 poster papers on watershed research projects, applied watershed management activities, and technology transfer mechanisms complemented the synthesis papers to broaden the conference scope. Proceedings of the conference, entitled "Land Stewardship in the 21st Century: The Contributions of Watershed Management," were published by and are available from the USDA Forest Service, Rocky Mountain Research Station, 240 West Prospect Road, Fort Collins, CO 80526. These proceedings are also available on the Rocky Mountain Research Station's World Wide Web pages at www.fs.fed.us/rm/pubs/stewardship.html. This bibliography is a compilation of the synthesis and poster papers presented at the conference along with the literature cited in these papers. This publication furnishes a literature basis for researchers, managers, decision-makers, educators, students, and lay persons with a keen interest in watershed management and better land stewardship in the future.

Book Hydrology and the Management of Watersheds

Download or read book Hydrology and the Management of Watersheds written by Kenneth N. Brooks and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-12-26 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new edition is a major revision of the popular introductory reference on hydrology and watershed management principles, methods, and applications. The book's content and scope have been improved and condensed, with updated chapters on the management of forest, woodland, rangeland, agricultural urban, and mixed land use watersheds. Case studies and examples throughout the book show practical ways to use web sites and the Internet to acquire data, update methods and models, and apply the latest technologies to issues of land and water use and climate variability and change.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increasing deployment of bioenergy frequently raises issues regarding the use of land and raw materials, infrastructure and logistics. In light of these sometimes conflicting interests Advances in Bioenergy provides an objective and wide-ranging overview of the technology, economics and policy of bioenergy. Offering an authoritative multidisciplinary summary of the opportunities and challenges associated with bioenergy utilization, with international researchers give up-to-date and detailed information on key issues for biomass production and conversion to energy. Key features: *Discusses different bioenergy uses such as transportation fuels, electricity and heat production. *Assesses emerging fields such as bio-based chemicals and bio-refineries. *Debates conditions for the mobilization of sustainable bioenergy supply chains and outlines governance systems to support this mobilization. * Dedicated chapters to sustainability governance and emerging tools such as certification systems and standards supporting growth of a sustainable bioenergy industry. *Considers the political, environmental, social and cultural context related to the demand for energy resources, the impact of this demand on the world around us, and the choices and behaviours of consumers. This book will be a vital reference to engineers, researchers and students that need an accessible overview of the bioenergy area. It will also be of high value for politicians, policymakers and industry leaders that need to stay up to date with the state-of-the-art science and technology in this area.

Book Watershed Management for Potable Water Supply

Download or read book Watershed Management for Potable Water Supply written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-02-17 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1997, New York City adopted a mammoth watershed agreement to protect its drinking water and avoid filtration of its large upstate surface water supply. Shortly thereafter, the NRC began an analysis of the agreement's scientific validity. The resulting book finds New York City's watershed agreement to be a good template for proactive watershed management that, if properly implemented, will maintain high water quality. However, it cautions that the agreement is not a guarantee of permanent filtration avoidance because of changing regulations, uncertainties regarding pollution sources, advances in treatment technologies, and natural variations in watershed conditions. The book recommends that New York City place its highest priority on pathogenic microorganisms in the watershed and direct its resources toward improving methods for detecting pathogens, understanding pathogen transport and fate, and demonstrating that best management practices will remove pathogens. Other recommendations, which are broadly applicable to surface water supplies across the country, target buffer zones, stormwater management, water quality monitoring, and effluent trading.

Book Arid and Semiarid Land Stewardship

Download or read book Arid and Semiarid Land Stewardship written by Peter F. Ffolliott and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Arid Lands Consortium (IALC) was established in 1990 to promote research, education, and training activities related to the development, management, and restoration or reclamation of arid and semiarid lands worldwide. The IALC, a leading international organization, supports ecological sustainability and development of arid and semiarid lands. Building on a decade of experience, IALC continues to increase the knowledge-base for managers by funding research, development, and demonstration projects, and special initiatives. The results from the scientific and technical projects enhance management and stewardship of arid and semiarid ecosystems for sustainable use, while maintaining the integrity of the ecological processes. The publication presents a review of the accomplishments and contributions of IALC's science and technical programs through a synopsis of the projects and initiatives. We group the projects and initiatives into soil and water resources development and conservation, land use and reclamation, processes enhancing the management of ecological systems, and inventorying and measurements techniques and monitoring.
