Book Waterloo Battlefield Guide

Download or read book Waterloo Battlefield Guide written by David Buttery and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2018-07-30 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of the material available to readers in the English language interested in the exploits of the troops of Hanover, Brunswick and Nassau is in the form of dry official reports, which stick to the basic facts and avoid all sentimentality and emotion. However, unbeknown to virtually anyone in the English-speaking world interested in the more human aspects of these 'foreign' troops fighting alongside the British at Waterloo, there are a number of memoirs and sets of letters, which have been published in Germany over the last two centuries. Until now, these had never been translated into English and so have been inaccessible to the vast majority. This volume seeks to put this right and to bring to life the human story of these German troops their trials and tribulations, their sufferings and their emotions and to finally reveal their views on the battle which many entered with mixed emotions. Highlights include an account of the confusion in the final great advance at Waterloo; eyewitness recollections of the defense of La Haye Sainte; rare battle reports by the Duke of Wellington; and a fascinating series of letters explaining the whereabouts of a number of 'missing' Hanoverian regimental and staff surgeons and subsequent court martials.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Esdaile’s new guide to the Battle of Waterloo presents the experience of the soldiers who took part in the battle in the most graphic and direct way possible – through their own words. In a series of walks he describes in vivid detail what happened in each location on 18 June 1815 and he quotes at length from eyewitness accounts of the men who were there. Each phase of the action during that momentous day is covered, from the initial French attacks and the intense fighting at Hougoumont and La Haye Sainte to the charges of the French cavalry against the British squares and the final, doomed attack of Napoleon’s Imperial Guard. This innovative guide to this historic site is fully illustrated with a selection of archive images from the War Heritage Institute in Brussels, modern color photographs of the battlefield as it appears today and specially commissioned maps which allow the visitor to follow the course of the battle on the ground.

Book Waterloo a Battlefield Guide

Download or read book Waterloo a Battlefield Guide written by S. Henry Dwan and published by . This book was released on 2020-11 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The battle of Waterloo was fought over 200 years ago and has continued to attract undiminishing interest ever since. Marking as it did the culmination of the Napoleonic Wars and the extinguishing of the fascinating career of that conflict's namesake. Just as the battle itself continues in its popularity, so too does the battlefield itself. In a normal year, anywhere up to 500,000 tourists descend on the location for a fulfilling experience which pays tribute to the Belgian people's justifiable investment and pride in this historic site. Tourism here, practically began before the gunpowder smoke had dissipated - tourists arrived generally from Brussels, to see for themselves the gory site of a 'freshly sewn' Napoleonic battlefield, while the suffering of desperately wounded men and horses was still in its early stages. At the time it was just another battlefield and the soldiers present expected another battle would be fought in a day or two - few if any fully appreciated the severity of the French defeat - and even fewer could have gauged the decisiveness of the encounter. But as subsequent events unfolded and it became apparent that the long 'Great French War' was finally at an end, so Waterloo grew to be the 'punctuation mark' of history that it is today.Under four miles wide and less than two and a half deep, Waterloo is an easily accessible battlefield with a total area of about eight to ten square miles - which can be covered on foot by many people in 1-2 days or perhaps 3 if a wider experience of each location is desired. The battlefield area is protected by a Belgian law laid down in 1914 which was extended to cover a wider area in 2015. Features on the battlefield remain significantly unchanged and the modern encroachment of tarmac and sign posts do little to detract from the overall impression. Buildings present in 1815 appear largely as they did then, with the notable exceptions of Papelotte and the Plancenoit church. La Haye Sainte, Mont St. Jean Farm, Le Caillou, Chantelet and the remains of Hougoumont all present the visitor with the rewarding image as seen by the soldiers present on 18th June. The same is true of those surviving locations that form a part of the 1815 campaign. Much of the Quatre-Bras and Ligny battlefields can still be seen - and locations in Wavre, Namur and Charleroi have also been happily preserved.Following the battle, many monuments, memorials, plaques and steles were erected/mounted in the widespread locations of the battlefield and campaign area. The most significant of these being the 'Lion Mound' raised half way down Wellington's right flank. Love it or hate it (for its alteration to this important part of the battlefield) the mound offers the most spectacular of views and allows the visitor to fully appreciate the scale of the battlefield as a whole. From here it is easy to look into the ground before La Belle Alliance and visualise the attacks by the French Cavalry and the Imperial Guard. I have also covered the visitor centre which in 2015 was transformed into perhaps the best historical battlefield centre in the world. It includes a very absorbing '4D ' film of the battle which put the viewer right in the middle of events (you see bayonets and horses muzzles actually come at you from the screen!) And also a very fine display of uniforms and weapons from the battle (the most accurate representation of 1815 uniforms you will probably see). Hougoumont too has seen some transformation and with renovation and a cinematic show now included. In all, the battlefield will not disappoint anyone remotely interested in history - for a 'Napoleonic buff' it cannot be missed. Finally, I have included an orders of battle to the guide by way of an appendix and guidance.

Download or read book The Waterloo Companion written by Mark Adkin and published by Aurum Press Limited. This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While many books have been published on Waterloo, none have rivalled this in either scale or authority. The text, based on Adkin’s fastidious research, including many days spent on the battlefield itself, does far more than simply narrate the events of 18 June 1815. The author provides as much analysis as he does description: plans are examined, commanders assessed and manoeuvres painstakingly related to the ground. Armies, weapons and tactics are comprehensively explored and evaluated. As with Adkin’s companions to the battles of Trafalgar and Gettysburg, the text focuses on myths and controversies surrounding the events, as well as elements often neglected in other narrative accounts –such as the performance of the French ‘Grand Battery’ or the Prussian attacks on Plancenoit. Divided into ten sections, The Waterloo Companion can be dipped into as a reference guide or read cover to cover. Featuring little-known information and first-hand accounts of those who fought at Waterloo, it also covers soldier and command structures, tactics and topographical details. Each section is put in context of the battle and enhanced by maps, plans, drawings and diagrams. The Waterloo Companion is an absolute must-have for any historian hoping to further their understanding of one of the world’s most famous land battles.

Book A Voice from Waterloo

Download or read book A Voice from Waterloo written by Edward Cotton and published by . This book was released on 2007-11 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Waterloo as told by one who fought and became one of its first historians The title of this book is doubly appropriate. Cotton was a soldier of the 7th Hussars who had served in Spain and became part of Wellington's polyglot army sent to Belgium to stand between Napoleon and his ambitions to regain the Imperial throne of France. He was in an ideal position to view the battle as a participant and his own experiences fighting with the light cavalry are retold in detail. After the battle Cotton saw an opportunity to make his living from the most momentous battle of the age and following his army discharge returned to Mont St Jean to become a battlefield guide and hotelier. Cotton's hotel still stands and is now the Waxworks Museum and part of the modern visitors' centre. Years of telling the story of the Battle of Waterloo enabled Cotton to fine tune his narrative and as a consequence he has left us an even handed and highly entertaining account filled with anecdotes related to him by other participants-on both sides of the conflict-as they revisited the battlefield in the years after those bloody days of June 1815. A Voice from Waterloo-the words of a soldier and a storyteller-was once the most popular book on its subject. It is an invaluable addition to any library of the Napoleonic Wars and also provides-as a consequence of its inspiration-a perfect companion for the modern Waterloo visitor as, perhaps, its most authentic expert tells his story once again across time.

Book excerpt: The name Waterloo has become synonymous with final, crushing defeat. Now this legendary battle is re-created in a groundbreaking book by an eminent British military historian making his major American debut. Revealing how and why Napoleon fell in Belgium in June 1815, The Battle of Waterloo definitively clears away the fog that has, over time, obscured the truth. With fresh details and interpretations, Jeremy Black places Waterloo within the context of the warfare of the period, showing that Napoleon’s modern army was beaten by Britain and Prussia with techniques as old as those of antiquity, including close-quarter combat. Here are the fateful early stages, from Napoleon’s strategy of surprise attack—perhaps spoiled by the defection of one of his own commanders—to his younger brother’s wasteful efforts assaulting the farm called Hougoumont. And here is the endgame, including Commander Michel Ney’s botched cavalry charge against the Anglo-Dutch line and the solid British resistance against a series of French cavalry strikes, with Napoleon “repeating defeat and reinforcing failure.” More than a masterly guide to an armed conflict, The Battle of Waterloo is a brilliant portrait of the men who fought it: Napoleon, the bold emperor who had bullied other rulers and worn down his own army with too many wars, and the steadfast Duke of Wellington, who used superior firepower and a flexible generalship in his march to victory. With bold analysis of the battle’s impact on history and its lessons for building lasting alliances in today’s world, The Battle of Waterloo is a small volume bound to have a big impact on global scholarship.

Download or read book Waterloo 11 written by Bernard Cornwell and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2001-11-01 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: June 1815: The Duke of Wellington, the Prince of Orange, and Napoleon will meet on the battlefield--and decide the fate of Europe With the emperor Napoleon at its head, an enormous French army is marching toward Brussels. The British and their allies are also converging on Brussels--in preparation for a grand society ball. It is up to Richard Sharpe to convince the Prince of Orange, the inexperienced commander of Wellington's Dutch troops, to act before it is too late. But Sharpe's warning cannot stop the tide of battle, and the British suffer heavy losses on the road to Waterloo. Wellington has few reserves of men and ammunition; the Prussian army has not arrived; and the French advance wields tremendous firepower and determination. Victory seems impossible.

Book Armies of the Napoleonic Wars

Download or read book Armies of the Napoleonic Wars written by Gregory Fremont-Barnes and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2011-02-07 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The armies of the Napoleonic Wars fought in a series of devastating campaigns that disturbed the peace of Europe for twelve years, yet the composition, organization and fighting efficiency of these forces receive too little attention. Each force tends to be examined in isolation or in the context of an individual battle or campaign or as the instrument of a famous commander. Rarely have these armies been studied together in a single volume as they are in this authoritative and fascinating reassessment edited by Gregory Fremont-Barnes.Leading experts on the Napoleonic Wars have been specially commissioned to produce chapters on each of the armed forces that took part in this momentous era in European history. The result is a vivid comparative portrait of ten of the most significant armies of the period, and of military service and warfare in the early nineteenth century. The book will be essential reading and reference for all students of the Napoleonic era.Covers the armies of Austria, Britain, the Confederation of the Rhine, the Duchy of Warsaw, France, the Kingdom of Italy, Portugal, Prussia, Russia and Spain.
