Book Water Services Management

Download or read book Water Services Management written by David Stephenson and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2005-03-01 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water services include water supply, sewerage and stormwater drainage. The facilities needed for these services are pipelines, reservoirs and treatment works; but the service goes beyond the infrastructure. It includes economics, billing, and business management. Although these services exist in every city, being advanced by the growing use of automation and information technology, costs are also increasing without many consumers seeing increased benefits. Customer service is therefore becoming important to the industry. Water Services Management is intended to educate engineers to manage and improve water services, rather than simply designing and constructing treatment works and distribution systems. The text covers water supply and drainage from the hydraulic and economic points of view, and while design and construction practices are reviewed, the focus of the book is on improving existing systems to turn the emerging industry into an attractive business. Topics covered include: Potable water supply, sewerage and stormwater drainage. Hydraulic management: storage, peak flow attenuation and pumping. Water quality: standards, pollution control and treatment. Infrastructure management: rehabilitation, reconstruction, upgrading and maintenance. Economic efficiency: asset management, privatization, and risk analysis. Improving economic viability via efficient use of energy and construction project management. Characteristics encountered in developing countries are also considered, including: Low cost sanitation, water supply standards and off-grid energy sources. Capacity building and appropriate technologies. Financing, operation and benchmarking.

Book Rethinking Infrastructure Design for Multi Use Water Services

Download or read book Rethinking Infrastructure Design for Multi Use Water Services written by Čedo Maksimović and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-08-27 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As we approach a historic tipping point in the global trend toward urbanisation – within two decades urban dwellers will increase from 49% to 60% of the planet’s population – this book identifies and addresses a critical problem: water. The editors show how cities can shift from being water consumers to resource managers, applying urban water management principles to ensure access to water and sanitation infrastructure and services; manage rainwater, wastewater, storm water drainage, and runoff pollution; control waterborne diseases and epidemics; and reduce the risk of such water-related hazards as floods, droughts and landslides. The book explores the Multiple-Use Water Services (MUS) paradigm, offering a section on the MUS approach and a means of calculating the value of MUS systems, as well as tools and resources to support decision-making. Case studies illustrate MUS in selected urban and rural contexts. Each case study breaks out the challenges, policy framework, benefits, benchmarks, lessons learned (success and failures) and potential next steps. The contributors consider the main options for applying the Multiple-Use Water Services (MUS) paradigm, breaking down its components and offering cost-benefit analyses along with challenges and considerations for both the short and long term. Also discussed are methods by which mutual interactions of water infrastructure and vegetated areas are taken into account in the synergy of spatial planning and optimised modelling of ecosystems’ performance indicators. This method of planning should make future developments cheaper to build; their users will pay lower utility bills for water, energy and heating. These developments will be more pleasant to live in and property value would likely be higher. The brief includes a section on the MUS approach and a means to calculate the value of MUS systems, as well as provides tools and resources to support decision-making. Case studies are included to illustrate MUS in selected urban and rural contexts. Each case study breaks out the challenges, policy framework, benefits, benchmarks, lessons learned (success and failures) and potential next steps.

Book Water Infrastructure for Sustainable Communities

Download or read book Water Infrastructure for Sustainable Communities written by Xiaodi Hao and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2010-07-31 with total page 609 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new model for water management is emerging worldwide in response to water shortages, polluted waterways, climate change, and loss of biodiversity. Cities and towns are questioning the ecological and financial sustainability of big-pipe water, stormwater, and sewer systems and are searching for “lighter footprint” more sustainable solutions. Pilot projects are being built that use, treat, store, and reuse water locally and that build distributed designs into restorative hydrology. This book has been developed from the conference on Sustainable Water Infrastructure for Villages and Cities of the Future (SWIF2009) held in November 2009 in Beijing (China) that brought together an international gathering of experts in urban water and drainage infrastructure, landscape architecture, economics, environmental law, citizen participation, utility management, green building, and science and technology development. Water Infrastructure for Sustainable Communities China and the World reveals how imaginative concepts are being developed and implemented to ensure that cities, towns, and villages and their water resources can become ecologically sustainable and provide clean water. With both urban and rural waters as a focal point, the links between water quality and hydrology, landscape, and the broader concepts of green cities/villages and smart development are explored. The book focuses on decentralized concepts of potable water, stormwater, and wastewater management that would provide clean water. It results in water management systems that would be resilient to extreme events such as excessive flows due to extreme meteorological events, severe droughts, and deteriorated water and urban ecosystem quality. A particular emphasis is placed on learning lessons from the many innovative projects being designed in China and other initiatives around the world. The principal audience for the book is university faculty and students, scientists in research institutes, water professionals, governmental organizations, NGOs, urban landscape architects and planners. Book Leveraging Asset Management Data for Improved Water Infrastructure Planning

Download or read book Leveraging Asset Management Data for Improved Water Infrastructure Planning written by and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to better understand current asset data collection and analysis in Canada for water, wastewater, and stormwater systems and to identify strategies to improve operations and planning outcomes. [...] The results of the national survey indicate good adoption of municipal/utility asset management plans across Canada, and the application of asset data to inform decisions on performance, cost optimization, and risk reduction. [...] Support and incentives over the last decade from upper-levels of government and others have focused on the development of asset management plans, which has largely been responsible for the increased number of asset management plans employed at the local level in Canada. [...] Several provinces and the federal government have since introduced asset management planning requirements to promote maturity in the sector, and last year the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) launched the Municipal Asset Management Program (MAMP), a five-year $50 million program funded by the Government of Canada to assist municipalities in building asset management capacity. [...] A leading advisory committee of experts and practitioners helped to refine the scope of the research, reviewed the survey results, and contributed to the report's findings.
