Book Estimating the Value of Water use Efficiency in the Intermountain West

Download or read book Estimating the Value of Water use Efficiency in the Intermountain West written by David G. Groves and published by Rand Corporation. This book was released on 2008 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Evaluating the cost-effectiveness of water-efficiency programs can be difficult, because not all the benefits are easily quantified. This report presents an economic framework based on two tools from the California Urban Water Conservation Council to estimate the avoided costs and environmental benefits of an agency's efficiency programs. The report evaluates the benefits of Denver Water efficiency programs and uses an exploratory modeling approach to accommodate the significant uncertainty in such estimations. The results of this study suggest that the inclusion of long-run avoided costs and environmental benefits is critical to fully recognizing the value of water-use efficiency programs. The authors find that evaluating only the short-run avoided costs leads to the conclusion that many water-efficiency projects already a part of Denver Water's 10-year conservation plan are not cost-effective. When long-run avoided costs and environmental and recreational benefits were factored in, all but two Denver Water programs were estimated to be cost-effective. The timing of projected water savings from efficiency programs is also critical. Water savings from programs that concentrate savings during summer months, when water is scarcer, should be valued higher than saving from programs that lead to more uniform water savings throughout the year, because these water savings reduce peak water needs." -- publisher's website.

Book Preparing Urban Water Use Efficiency Plans

Download or read book Preparing Urban Water Use Efficiency Plans written by Lisa Maddaus and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2013-11-15 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many communities are facing water scarcity in developing and developed countries alike. There are numerous publications and on-going research studies documenting the changes in our climate and potential for worsening shortages in our future. Meeting future potable water demands as communities continue to grow will rely heavily on using our existing water resources more efficiently. Preparing Urban Water Use Efficiency Plans provides detailed approaches to developing and implementing a water conservation plan. This book covers the broad spectrum of conservation planning for urban communities including achieving more efficiency from: Residential domestic uses Commercial and governmental facilities use Industrial uses Pricing Water Loss Control Programs The steps in the Guide clearly outline and provide sample calculations to aid determining which water use efficiency activities are financially justifiable to undertake. The end result is a plan that policy decision makers can adopt and fund, and that water service provider staff can implement to help increase their community's water reliability. It includes numerous case studies and a Microsoft Excel based software tool to allow planners to evaluate the business case for implementing various water conservation activities. This book is an essential resource for professionals in water and wastewater resources, particularly for planners and engineers. It is also a useful guide for Post Graduate and Undergraduate students. Author(s): Lisa Maddaus, William Maddaus and Michelle Maddaus, Maddaus Water Management Inc.

Book Estimating the Value of Water Use Efficiency in the Intermountain West

Download or read book Estimating the Value of Water Use Efficiency in the Intermountain West written by David G. Groves and published by Rand Corporation. This book was released on 2008-01-16 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents an economic framework for estimating a water agency's avoided costs and environmental benefits of increasing water-use efficiency. The report demonstrates this framework by evaluating the benefits of Denver Water's efficiency programs and utilizes an exploratory modeling approach to accommodate significant uncertainty. The analysis highlights the importance of considering both long- and short-run costs and benefits.

Book Plant Breeding for Abiotic Stress Tolerance

Download or read book Plant Breeding for Abiotic Stress Tolerance written by Roberto Fritsche-Neto and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-06-05 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapid population growth and the increase in the per capita income, especially in the group of emerging countries referred to as BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) has created huge pressure for the expansion of the agricultural growing area and the crop yields to meet the rising demand. As a result, many areas that have been considered marginal for growing crops, due to their low fertility, drought, salinity, and many other abiotic stresses, have now been incorporated in the production system. Additionally, climate change has brought new challenges to agriculture to produce food, feed, fiber and biofuels. To cope with these new challenges, many plant breeding programs have reoriented their breeding scope to stress tolerance in the last years. The authors of this book have collected the most recent advances and discoveries applied to breeding for abiotic stresses in this book, starting with new physiological concepts and breeding methods, and moving on to discuss modern molecular biological approaches geared to the development of improved cultivars tolerant to most sorts of abiotic stress. Written in an easy to understand style, this book is an excellent reference work for students, scientists and farmers interested in learning how to breed for abiotic stresses scenarios, presenting the state-of-the-art in plant stresses and allowing the reader to develop a greater understanding of the basic mechanisms of tolerance to abiotic stresses and how to breed for them.

Book Water Efficiency Programs for Integrated Water Management

Download or read book Water Efficiency Programs for Integrated Water Management written by Thomas W. Chesnutt and published by Amer Water Works Assn. This book was released on 2007 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research provides a conceptual framework organizing information about WUE programs (costs, savings, and benefits) in ways that make for more informed water resources decisions. Chapters are provided for each of these concepts. In addition, two planning models developed and tested in the research process--a Water Utility Direct Avoided Cost Model and a Benefit-Cost WUE Planning Model--are provided on CD-ROM. A compendium of working assumptions for WUE savings and costs estimates was compiled as part of this research.
