The research focuses on the poor water quality associated with deep, anoxic releases from hydropower and non-hydropower reservoirs. Water quality results from the tailwaters of the Little Missiouri River (Lake Greeson), Fouche La Fave River (Nimrod Lake), Rough River (Rough RiverLake), and Guadalupe River (Canyon Lake) are presented and discussed. The release of anoxic waters high in reduced substances into tailwaters can affect water resources, be hazardous to aquatic life, cause water treatment problems, and affect areas used for recreation. Eventually the water quality will recover to baseline conditions; however, the chemical and recovery mechanisms of the tailwater must be better understood to practice effective water quality management. Thus, the goals of the work discussed herein were to develop an improved understanding of chemical transformations and recovery mechanisms in selected Corps reservoir tailwaters and to provide guidance on sampling and analysis of tailwater quality.

Construction and operation of the Harry S. Truman project has created the potential for directly affecting the water quality of the Lake of the Ozarks. This paper describes the features of the Harry S. Truman project, the development of a water quality monitoring program for the project, and operating experience since closure of the embankment in July 1977. Major fish kills have occurred as a result of supersaturation downstream of Harry S. Truman Dam. Brief periods of depressed dissolved oxygen levels in the tailwater area have also occurred. In both cases structural modifications and adjustments in project operations have provided solutions that will significantly reduce downstream water quality problems.

Commendable progress has been made by the developed world to control point sources of pollution, but commensurate progress in reducing non-point sources has not been made. In the third world countries both point and non-point sources of pollution are becoming increasingly a serious concern. Already, nearly all water bodies in such countries near and around urban centres have been severely polluted, with very high health and environmental costs. The book assesses the current status of water quality management in both developed and developing worlds, as well as analysing the effectiveness of economic instruments and legal and institutional frameworks to control water contamination. It outlines the importance of building up social and political awareness to reverse the trend of continuing water quality deterioration, which is likely to be a most challenging task in the coming years. This book was published as a special issue of International Journal of Water Resources Development.
