Book Regional Cooperation for Water Quality Improvement in Southwestern Pennsylvania

Download or read book Regional Cooperation for Water Quality Improvement in Southwestern Pennsylvania written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2005-04-04 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The city of Pittsburgh and surrounding area of southwestern Pennsylvania face complex water quality problems, due in large part to aging wastewater infrastructures that cannot handle sewer overflows and stormwater runoff, especially during wet weather. Other problems such as acid mine drainage are a legacy of the region's past coal mining, heavy industry, and manufacturing economy. Currently, water planning and management in southwestern Pennsylvania is highly fragmented; federal and state governments, 11 counties, hundreds of municipalities, and other entities all play roles, but with little coordination or cooperation. The report finds that a comprehensive, watershed-based approach is needed to effectively meet water quality standards throughout the region in the most cost-effective manner. The report outlines both technical and institutional alternatives to consider in the development and implementation of such an approach.

Book Advances in Water Quality Control

Download or read book Advances in Water Quality Control written by Gail Krantzberg and published by Scientific Research Publishing, Inc. USA. This book was released on 2010-10-28 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World water resources seem to be abundant; however, only 0.7% of this total amount is usable water. And owing to their nonuniform distribution, some countries have abundant water resources, whereas some others suffer from inadequate water, and even face severe water scarcity problems. Moreover, serious water pollution problems make 1/5 of the world’s population (approximately 1.1 billion people) under the risk of water-related diseases. In order to give a guideline to maintain the required quality of water according to the intended use, a group of international experts have come together to write this book. Authors target to pass recent available knowledge and information to the readers, who will vary from academicians, professional engineers and scientists, to undergraduate and graduate engineering students concerned with water quality problems all over the world. This book covers the main fields of Wastewater Treatment with 12 chapters, and uses knowledges in economic, information technologies, biology, etc. to make comprehensive analyses and applications.

Book Legionella Contamination in Water Environment

Download or read book Legionella Contamination in Water Environment written by Silvia Bonetta and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2021-09-01 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Legionella spp. are ubiquitous microorganisms that are widely distributed in aquatic environments. Water systems of large buildings, such as hospitals, hotels, and rental units are often contaminated by legionellae and various parameters such as physical, chemical, and microbial building water system characteristics can influence Legionella occurrence. A range of physical and chemical disinfection methods have been proposed to control Legionella contamination; however, to date, the most effective procedures have not been defined. There is a need to survey legionellae in water systems to prevent legionellosis. Although the assessment of L. pneumophila in water is typically performed by culture isolation on selective media, it has several limits. For this reason, alternative tools for rapid, sensitive, and specific detection of Legionella in water samples have been proposed. In order to increase knowledge on different aspects of Legionella contamination in the water environment, this book gathers research studies related to the occurrence of Legionella in water systems of different environments; the role of different factors that can influence the Legionella contamination, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of different methodological approaches.

Book DNAPL Site Evaluation

    Book Details:
  • Author : James W. Mercer

Download or read book DNAPL Site Evaluation written by James W. Mercer and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2024-11-01 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DNAPL Site Evaluation covers long-term contamination of ground water by DNAPL (dense non-aqueous phase liquids) chemicals. The book develops a framework for planning and implementing DNAPL site characterization activities. It provides detailed methods to identify, characterize, and monitor sites and analyzes their utility, limitations, risks, availability, and cost. Methods to interpret contaminant fate and transport are identified, and new site characterization methods are assessed. DNAPL Site Evaluation will maximize the cost-effectiveness of site investigation/remediation by providing the best information available to describe and evaluate methods to be used for determining the presence, fate, and transport of subsurface DNAPL contamination. The book will be a useful reference for groundwater professionals and environmental regulatory personnel.
