Book The Earth s Hydrological Cycle

Download or read book The Earth s Hydrological Cycle written by L. Bengtsson and published by Springer Science & Business. This book was released on 2014-05-02 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives a comprehensive presentation of our present understanding of the Earth's Hydrological cycle and the problems, consequences and impacts that go with this topic. Water is a central component in the Earth's system. It is indispensable for life on Earth in its present form and influences virtually every aspect of our planet's life support system. On relatively short time scales, atmospheric water vapor interacts with the atmospheric circulation and is crucial in forming the Earth's climate zones. Water vapor is the most powerful of the greenhouse gases and serves to enhance the tropospheric temperature. The dominant part of available water on Earth resides in the oceans. Parts are locked up in the land ice on Greenland and Antarctica and a smaller part is estimated to exist as groundwater. If all the ice over the land and all the glaciers were to melt, the sea level would rise by some 80 m. In comparison, the total amount of water vapor in the atmosphere is small; it amounts to ~ 25 kg/m2, or the equivalent of 25 mm water for each column of air. Yet atmospheric water vapor is crucial for the Earth’s energy balance. The book gives an up to date presentation of the present knowledge. Book excerpt: Examines the total cost of salt and calcium magnesium acetate (CMA), including the indirect cost of application and indirect costs to the environment, infrastructure, and motor vehicles. This report focuses on defining the true cost of salt, which is the most popular deicer and the standard of comparison for most other deicing products.

Book Chemical Deicers and the Environment

Download or read book Chemical Deicers and the Environment written by Frank M. D'Itri and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1992-03-30 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemical Deicers and the Environment provides a complete discussion of chemical deicer technology and history in the United States and Canada. The book describes engineering applications, maintenance procedures, economic evaluations, in addition to environmental problems and concerns relative to the use of chemical deicing. It also provides a technical appraisal of the latest technology to stimulate further research and discussion directed toward achieving a more integrated approach for the application of new deicers that will protect motor vehicles, highways and infrastructures, and the environment. Chemical Deicers and the Environment will be a useful reference volume for scientists, legislators, transportation engineers, environmentalists, consultants, and concerned individuals interested in learning about the economic and environmental advantages and disadvantages of today's chemical deicers.

Book Limnological Aspects of Recreational Lakes

Download or read book Limnological Aspects of Recreational Lakes written by Kenneth Marsh Mackenthun and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Limnological Aspects of Recreational Lakes" considers the many problems associated with the recreational use of lakes, reservoirs, and ponds. These standing-water bodies receive the most concentrated and varied recreational use of any waters, and provide enjoyment to the greatest number of people. Individuals using such areas soon become aware of associated biological problems and often demand remedial measures to alleviate developing nuisances or the prevention of them before they arise. This book is written for the person faced with problems of interpretation and management in dealing with the phenomena of recreational lakes. In most States, a permit or permission must be obtained from an appropriate agency prior to the institution of controls. Then controls are instituted, the recommended controlling agent and its field application must be tempered with a scientist's astute knowledge of both the problem and the ecological ramifications of a control program.
