Book excerpt: An exploration of bottled water's impact on social justice and sustainability, and how diverse movements are fighting back. In just four decades, bottled water has transformed from a luxury niche item into a ubiquitous consumer product, representing a $300 billion market dominated by global corporations. It sits at the convergence of a mounting ecological crisis of single-use plastic waste and climate change, a social crisis of affordable access to safe drinking water, and a struggle over the fate of public water systems. Unbottled examines the vibrant movements that have emerged to question the need for bottled water and challenge its growth in North America and worldwide. Drawing on extensive interviews with activists, residents, public officials, and other participants in controversies ranging from bottled water's role in unsafe tap water crises to groundwater extraction for bottling in rural communities, Daniel Jaffee asks what this commodity's meteoric growth means for social inequality, sustainability, and the human right to water. Unbottled profiles campaigns to reclaim the tap and addresses the challenges of ending dependence on packaged water in places where safe water is not widely accessible. Clear and compelling, it assesses the prospects for the movements fighting plastic water and working to ensure water justice for all.

Book Hydraulic Processes on Alluvial Fans

Download or read book Hydraulic Processes on Alluvial Fans written by R.H. French and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1987-06-01 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alluvial fans are among the most prominent landscape features in the American Southwest and throughout the semi-arid and arid regions of the world. The importance of developing a qualitative and quantitative understanding of the hydraulic processes which formed, and which continue to modify, these features derives from their rapid and significant development over the past four decades. As unplanned urban sprawl has moved from valley floors onto alluvial fans, the serious damage incurred from infrequent flow events has dramatically increased. This book presents a concise, coherent discussion of our current and rapidly expanding knowledge of hydraulic processes on alluvial fans. It addresses the subject from a multidisciplinary viewpoint, acquainting the geologist with engineering principles, and the civil engineer and planner with geological principles pertinent to the analysis of hydraulic processes on alluvial fans. The book thus provides much of interest to geologists, civil engineers and planners involved in floodplain management and drainage design in arid and semi-arid regions.

Book Hydrodynamics and Transport for Water Quality Modeling

Download or read book Hydrodynamics and Transport for Water Quality Modeling written by James L. Martin and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1998-12-15 with total page 820 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydrodynamics and Transport for Water Quality Modeling presents a complete overview of current methods used to describe or predict transport in aquatic systems, with special emphasis on water quality modeling. The book features detailed descriptions of each method, supported by sample applications and case studies drawn from the authors' years of experience in the field. Each chapter examines a variety of modeling approaches, from simple to complex. This unique text/reference offers a wealth of information previously unavailable from a single source. The book begins with an overview of basic principles, and an introduction to the measurement and analysis of flow. The following section focuses on rivers and streams, including model complexity and data requirements, methods for estimating mixing, hydrologic routing methods, and unsteady flow modeling. The third section considers lakes and reservoirs, and discusses stratification and temperature modeling, mixing methods, reservoir routing and water balances, and dynamic modeling using one-, two-, and three-dimensional models. The book concludes with a section on estuaries, containing topics such as origins and classification, tides, mixing methods, tidally averaged estuary models, and dynamic modeling. Over 250 figures support the text. This is a valuable guide for students and practicing modelers who do not have extensive backgrounds in fluid dynamics.

This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the lectures given in the International Course "Improving efficiency and reliability in water supply systems", hosted and sponsored by the Menendez Pelayo International University (U.I.M.P.) and co-sponsored by Aguas de Valencia, the British Council and the EC Cornett and Erasmus programmes. The short course took place in Valencia (Spain) in November 1994, with an attendance of more than one hundred delegates. We must not only acknowedge and thank Dr. Joaquin Azagra, as UIMP Director, but also his collaborators D. Luis Moreno and Lidia Lopez for their support in the preparation of the Course and during the course taking place. UIMP sponsorship allowed us to assemble in Valencia an eminent cadre of lecturers coming from all over the world, that covered in an ordered and precise fashion some of the more relevant aspects on efficiency and reliability in water supply systems. We are very thankful to all these leading lecturers for their invaluable cooperation. The publication of this book and the Spanish edition as well, have been made possible thanks to the sponsorship of both Polytechnic University of Valencia througout its Chancellor, Justo Nieto, and Aguas de Valencia throughout its General Director Alvaro Aguirre. We must also thank Kluwer Academic Publishers and especially their Publisher Petra van Steenbergen for her assistance, careful presentation and production of the book.

Book excerpt: This book fills a gap in the current literature by bringing water resources and the forest-water relation into a single volume. The text broadly discusses common issues on water resource and forest-water relation and serves as an introduction to forest hydrology. Forest Hydrology: An Introduction to Water and Forests covers issues on water, forests, the water-forest relation, watershed research, and hydrologic measurements, and provides state-of-the-art knowledge on the impact of forests to the hydrologic environment. It emphasizes concepts and general principles within these two natural resources, and details the processes of hydrologic components in forested areas. The extensive review of forest impacts on the hydrologic cycle and stream environment contained here provides state-of-the-science information for land and water resource managers, administrators, planners, practitioners, and concerned citizens. The text supplies students, researchers, and hydrology professionals with sufficient background to study forest hydrology, conduct watershed research, and make hydrologic observations without previous exposure to the subject. With its comprehensive coverage and an extensive bibliography, Forest Hydrology provides you with the necessary knowledge and foundation for managing water resources in forested areas under a variety of environmental conditions.

Book Sediment Water Interactions

  • Author : P.G. Sly
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 9400923767
  • Pages : 529 pages

Download or read book Sediment Water Interactions written by P.G. Sly and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction The Fourth Symposium on Sediment/Water Interactions was held in Melbourne, Australia, February 16-20th, 1987. The previous three symposia were held in Amsterdam, Kingston (Ontario), and Geneva, In keeping with the approach established in Geneva, contributions addressed sediment/water interactions related to both fresh and salt water conditions. More than 160 papers were given in Melbourne, including more than 20 poster presentations, and collected Abstracts are available from Dr. B. T. Hart. A total of 51 papers, subsequently, have been published as proceedings of the Melbourne Symposium; 45 of these appear in this issue of Hydrobiologia. A further six appeared earlier as a selection of papers in J. Environ. Geol. and Water Science (1988, issue # 1); these six papers appear in abstract form, only, in the present pUblication. Although concerned with the global environment, the International Association for Sediment Water Science attempts to ensure that there is a genuine opportunity for participants to focus on regional issues throughout the world and, in particular, to provide a local forum for their presentation. The Melbourne meeting was particularly successful in achieving this objective, and Australasia was well represented by about 36 percent of the contributors. About 27 percent were from Europe, 17 percent from North America, 7 percent from China and Japan, 7 percent from Southeast Asia and India, and about 6 percent came from other areas. In all, 25 countries were represented.
