It is presented in five books, bound as two volumes. Different books within the larger system of books will resonate with different reading audiences, from architects to people reconceiving higher education to the public policy or defense and intelligence communities. These magnificent, ingeniously conceived structures are an integral part of mainstream Indian architecture and have complex architectural and spatial figuration and extensive sculptural or relief ornamentation. Their deep art-historical significance, the development and diversity of their architecture and hydrological engineering, their canonical authorization, their specific iconographic, aesthetic and ritual characteristics, as well as their location in the socio-religious, economic and agrarian order of the region, make them important cultural constituents of their times. Water Design will explore in an interdisciplinary way the architectural plan and structural framework and its variants determined by local traditions and spatial considerations; their artistic and ornamental characteristics; the topography of waterscapes and how these determine or are determined by the urban setting; as well as their location along the trade routes which might have facilitated the cross-influencing of architectural form across regions and cultures. Jutta Jain-Neubauer studied Indology and Indian Art History at the South Asia Institute of the University of Heidelberg, Germany (MA 1976), and University of Bonn, Germany, where she obtained her PhD degree with a thesis on 'Stepwells of Gujarat in art-historical Perspective' in 1978. With a fellowship of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation she studied the ancient canonical texts on art and architecture of India (shilpa shastras). She worked for various institutions in India, such as the National Museum Institute for Art History, Museology and Conservation; the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), for whom she has done the first ever full-fledged documentation of Rani ni Vav, the famed Stepwell of the Queen in Patan, recently declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. She is currently Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellow, affiliated to Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi.

This book captures propositions and speculations around this question through design studies undertaken in three Australian cities: Melbourne's low-lying swampy areas, Brisbane's flooding river valley and Perth's deep groundwater network. Each of these cities has its own set of challenges around water, based on their particular natural environmental conditions and the radical modifications over 200 years that have fundamentally changed the way that water moves. The ambitious schemes of the past - dams, drains, canals, sewers, reservoirs, lakes, aqueducts - made room for the 'progress' of the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Now in the twenty-first century we need new ambitions where urban environments can adapt to the unpredictability of water through its extremes of dry and wet conditions. The design responses in this book contribute to such an aim by understanding the past, present and possible future conditions of local sites, and using this knowledge to create multi-purposed, alternative design scenarios towards a water-sensitive city. There is a confluence between available contemporary development land and problematic water sites. Many of the places in which contemporary development is occurring were not part of the originally planned city, and were leftover places that were never really suitable for development because of their water issues; these include high groundwater areas in Perth, low-lying flood-prone post-industrial lands in Melbourne, and urbanised flooding zones of Brisbane. These areas, now in central focus to accommodate large-scale city development for growing urban populations, demand new ways of thinking and building.
