Book Water for sustainable food and agriculture

Download or read book Water for sustainable food and agriculture written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2018-06-27 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report first provides an outlook for the agricultural and food market and highlights the challenges that population trends, rising global incomes and climate change present to agriculture and water. The following section focuses on two broad areas that require attention and presents recommendations on: (i) policies within the agricultural domain that apply specifically to the sector, such as water supply enhancement, water loss reduction, crop productivity, water re-allocation, and options for rainfed agriculture; and (ii) actions within the water domain that relate to water management for all sectors, not only agriculture.

Book Water for Food in a Changing World

Download or read book Water for Food in a Changing World written by Alberto Garrido and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2011-04-12 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is not enough water globally for all the things humans need and want water to do for us. Water supply bubbles are bursting in China, the Middle East and India with potentially serious implications for the global economy and for political stability. Even the United States is depleting groundwater on average 25% faster than it is being replenished. Our thirst for water grows with our population, but the amount of fresh water available on Earth is fixed. If we assume "business as usual" by 2050 about 40% of the projected global population of 9.4 billion is expected to be facing water stress or scarcity. With increasing climate variability being predicted by global climate models, we are likely also to have more people without adequate water more of the time, even in water-rich regions. Irrigation productivity rose dramatically over the past 40 years as a result of the Green Revolution. However, even if we disregard the environmental impacts caused by that revolution, we are no nearer to achieving global food security than we were 40 years ago, as every time we come close to filling the food production gap population growth and ecosystem decline associated with water diversions to human purposes set us back. Our natural and agricultural ecosystems are trying to tell us something. This book pursues these overarching themes connecting to water and food production at global and regional scales. The collection offers a comprehensive discussion of all relevant issues, and offers a wide-ranging discussion with the aim of contributing to the global debate about water and food crises.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is an analytical summary and a critical synthesis of research at the International Water Management Institute over the past decade under its evolving research paradigm known popularly as 'more crop per drop'. The research synthesized here covers the full range of issues falling in the larger canvas of water-food-health-environment interface. Besides its immediate role in sharing knowledge with the research, donor, and policy communities, this volume also has a larger purpose of promoting a new way of looking at the water issues within the broader development context of food, livelihood, health and environmental challenges. More crop per drop: Revisiting a research paradigm contrasts the acquired wisdom and fresh thinking on some of the most challenging water issues of our times. It describes new tools, approaches, and methodologies and also illustrates them with practical application both from a global perspective and within the local and regional contexts of Asia and Africa. Since this volume brings together all major research works of IWMI, including an almost exhaustive list of citations, in one single set of pages, it is very valuable not only as a reference material for researchers and students but also as a policy tool for decision-makers and development agencies.

Book Environment and the poor development

Download or read book Environment and the poor development written by H. Jeffrey Leonard and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on 1989-01-01 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, one of the ODC's U.S.-Third World Policy Perspectives series, "offers useful steps for policymakers concerned with the critical challenges of integrating environment and development concerns," --Jessica Tuchman Matthews, World Resources Institute. Six out of every ten of the world's people are being inexorably pushed by agricultural modernization and continuing high population growth rates into ecologically vulnerable environments: tropical forests, dryland and hilly areas, and the fringes of great urban centers. Unless development strategies support their capabilities to ensure their own survival, the 470 million people living in these vulnerable areas will be forced to meet their short-term need to survive at the cost of long-term ecological sustainability and the well-being of future generations. In response to these startling statistics, the authors call for new policies and new forms of collaboration among participants at the local, national, and international levels. They offer practical and stimulating recommendations to bring together population planners, water engineers, health professionals, bankers, among others, to find solutions to both poverty and environmental problems.

Book Ecological Sustainability and Integrity Concepts and Approaches

Download or read book Ecological Sustainability and Integrity Concepts and Approaches written by J. Lemons and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book follows upon earlier work which culminated in the publication of two recent books, Sustainable Development: Science, Ethics, and Public Policy (John Lemons and Donald A. Brown, editors), and Perspectives on Ecological Integrity (Laura Westra and John Lemons, editors). Both of these books also were published by Kluwer Academic Publishers. In this book, we seek to explore more fully the concepts of sustainability and ecological integrity as well as the connections between them. We have divided chapters into three groups. In the first, the concept of sustainability in relation to science, law, and ethics is explored. In the second, concepts of sustainability and ecological integrity are applied to problems in specific natural resources. Finally, in the third group we examine possible approaches to public policy which might include concepts of sustainability and ecological integrity. Overall, we believe that this collection presents a wide variety of perspectives, discussions, and case studies.
