This book was released on 2012-11-09 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Literature, Works, grade: 1,3, University of Tubingen (English Department), course: Introduction to Literature Studies, language: English, abstract: The narration is primarily about wasted opportunities, about a man who is looking back upon his life and wishes he had acted differently. Through his ‘expedition’,Mr Stevens is granted the opportunity to rethink his life, identify the mistakes he made and avoid them in the future. The question is whether he uses this opportunity wisely or if he wastes it. Already in the prologue Mr Stevens admits to have “a reluctance to change too many of the old ways”, and this will be proven to be all-too true (Ishiguro 7). His behaviour and attitude after the journey which could have been a turning point in his life are by and large not altered after his journey.Mr Stevens is not able to change himself in the important areas, namely his restraint, his extreme professionalism, and the attitude towards his father, although he makes some superficial progress regarding Lord Darlington.

Book Now No Opportunity Wasted

Download or read book Now No Opportunity Wasted written by Phil Keoghan and published by Random House Australia. This book was released on 2005 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At 19, New Zealand-born TV adventurer Phil Keoghan nearly drowned during a dive to a sunken cruise ship. He survived, but the near-miss got him thinking about all the things he wanted to do before he died - and there were so many he began a list, checking off number one straightaway when he returned to the scene of his diving emergency the very same day. Back on dry land, Phil set about fulfilling his wish list, embarking on a series of adventures ranging from enjoying a five-star meal on the top of an erupting volcano to getting married underwater. He found that while often off-the-wall, quirky and sometimes even downright dangerous, each experience enriched his life in unexpected ways. And he realised he had created a philosophy that he's keen to share with others: it's all about getting the most out of life. Now Phil wants to help you achieve the experiences you've always hankered after but thought you would never have time for. With easygoing humour, he cuts through the excuses and asks, 'What are you waiting for?' Drawing on Phil's own amazing adventures as well as the stories of ordinary people who have taken up his challenge, NO OPPORTUNITY WASTED is an urgent call to action that will inspire you to: * face your fear * 'get lost' - lose yourself in the experience * test your limits * take a leap of faith * rediscover your childhood * shed your inhibitions * break new ground, and * aim for the heart - live out your dream by helping others. So stop dreaming and get out there and do it - NOW!

Book The History of Missed Opportunities

Download or read book The History of Missed Opportunities written by William Galperin and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2017-05-23 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through close engagement with the work of Wordsworth, Austen, and Byron, The History of Missed Opportunities posits that the everyday first emerged as a distinct category of experience, or first became thinkable, in the Romantic period. Conceived here as something overlooked and only noticed in retrospect, the everyday not only becomes subject matter for Romanticism, it also structures Romantic poetry, prose, and writing habits. Because the everyday is not noticed the first time around, it comes to be thought of as a missed opportunity, a possible world that was not experienced or taken advantage of and of whose history—or lack thereof—writers become acutely conscious. Consciousness of the everyday also entails a new relationship to time, as the Romantics turn to the history of what might have been. In recounting Romanticism's interest in making things recurrently present, in recovering a past of what was close at hand yet underappreciated, William H. Galperin positions the Romantics as precursors to twentieth-century thinkers of the everyday, including Heidegger, Benjamin, Lefebvre, and Cavell. He attends to Romantic discourse that works at cross purposes with standard accounts of both Romanticism and Romantic subjectivity. Instead of individualizing or turning inward, the Romantics' own discourse depersonalizes or exhibits a confrontation with thing-ness and the material world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on a newly developed theoretical definition of “missed opportunity,” Chances for Peace uses extensive sources in English, Hebrew, and Arabic to systematically measure the potentiality levels of opportunity across some ninety years of attempted negotiations in the Arab-Israeli conflict. With enlightening revelations that defy conventional wisdom, this study provides a balanced account of the most significant attempts to forge peace, initiated by the world’s superpowers, the Arabs (including the Palestinians), and Israel. From Arab-Zionist negotiations at the end of World War I to the subsequent partition, the aftermath of the 1967 War and the Sadat Initiative, and numerous agreements throughout the 1980s and 1990s, concluding with the Annapolis Conference in 2007 and the Abu Mazen-Olmert talks in 2008, pioneering scholar Elie Podeh uses empirical criteria and diverse secondary sources to assess the protagonists’ roles at more than two dozen key junctures. A resource that brings together historiography, political science, and the practice of peace negotiation, Podeh’s insightful exploration also showcases opportunities that were not missed. Three agreements in particular (Israeli-Egyptian, 1979; Israeli-Lebanese, 1983; and Israeli-Jordanian, 1994) illuminate important variables for forging new paths to successful negotiation. By applying his framework to a broad range of power brokers and time periods, Podeh also sheds light on numerous incidents that contradict official narratives. This unique approach is poised to reshape the realm of conflict resolution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who of us can claim never to have made a mistake, missed a goal, regretted a choice, or suffered because of another's action? For those who suffer from a constant sense of regret about the past, who feel their present lives have been immutably shaped by actions they could or should or would have taken but didn't, real help is at hand. In clear, uncomplicated language, Dr. Arthur Freeman, a leading exponent of cognitive therapy, and his colleague Rose DeWolf, a skillful translator of the cognitive method, describe the techniques and provide exercises that will enable readers to actually "unblock" the past. The authors demonstrate that wouldo/coulda/shoulda thinking can be unlearned and that this process can be accomplished in a relatively short period of time.
