Book excerpt: The dangers of ancient technology loom over the Polity in the sequel to The Soldier, Neal Asher’s latest action-packed space opera series. The haiman Orlandine, charged with safeguarding lethal Jain tech swirling inside an accretion disc located in the distant reaches of space, has weaponized a black hole to eliminate the threat. But others are suspicious of her motives, and both the Polity AIs and the leaders of the alien prador kingdom dispatch fleets of warships in anticipation of conflict. As the black hole continues to eat its way through the planets in the accretion disc, making its way towards a dead sun, it becomes clear the disc has been hiding a larger secret. Nefarious forces with ulterior motives have manipulated Orlandine into deploying the black hole, triggering a series of larger events that will uncover a danger far older than even the Polity itself. From British science fiction writer Neal Asher, The War Ship picks up right where its predecessor, The Soldier, left off, showcasing Asher’s unique take on cutting-edge and fast-paced science fiction.

Book excerpt: Printed in COLOR Recently it was announced that China's PLA Navy now has more ships (300) than the U.S. Navy (287). This book covers the bulk of Taiwan's Navy's warships including destroyers, frigates, and corvettes. Taiwan is in the midst of upgrading their defense posture with indigenous boats designed to ward off an attack. Their new corvette is fast and the high-speed minelayers coming on line in November 2021 will go a long way towards denying naval dominance by an enemy around the island nation. The corvette has been dubbed an "aircraft carrier killer" by the press and that tells me Taiwan is concerned with China's plans to launch several new aircraft carriers in the coming years. The next generation (after the ships that are currently undergoing sea trials) will probably be nuclear powered. I suspect they will also include a full complement of defensive weapons to include lasers, rail guns and as yet unannounced sonic weapons similar to what was used in Cuba, but on a much larger scale. It remains to be seen if China's strategy of moving the conflict further away from their shores will be effective. It also remains to be seen how China will deal with a fully-capable adversary in their rear, if conflict breaks out on the new islands being built. I suspect we will see this all play out before the year 2030. 4th Watch Publishing Co. is a HUBZONE SDVOSB. Our books are compact, tightly-bound paperback, full-size (8 1⁄2 by 11 inches), with large text and glossy covers. https://usgovpub.com

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Very Special Ships is the first full-length book about the six Abdiel-class fast minelayers, the fastest and most versatile ships to serve in the Royal Navy in the Second World War. They operated not only as offensive minelayers – dashing into enemy waters under cover of darkness – but in many other roles, most famously as blockade runners to Malta. In lieu of mines, they transported items as diverse as ammunition, condensed milk, gold, and VIPs. Distinguished by their three funnels, the Abdiels were attractive, well-designed ships, and they were also unique – no other navy had such ships, and so they were sought-after commands and blessed with fine captains. To give the fullest picture of this important class of ships, the book details the origins and history of mines, minelayers, and minelaying; covers the origins and design of the class; describes the construction of each of the six ships, and the modified design of the last two; tells in detail of the operational careers of the ships in the second World War, when they played vital roles in the battle of Crete and the siege of Malta, plied the hazardous route to Tobruk, and laid mines off the Italian coast. The post-war careers of the surviving ships is also documented. Written to appeal to naval enthusiasts, students of World War II and modelmakers, the author tells the story of these ships through first-hand accounts, official sources, and specially- commissioned drawings and photographs.

Book excerpt: China Surface Warships, 2019 - 2020. Color photos of active Chinese PLA Navy Surface Warships Recently it was announced that China's PLA Navy now has more ships (300) than the U.S. Navy (287). This book covers the bulk of Beijing's Navy including destroyers, frigates, and corvettes. These categories have seen more growth since 2005 than any other. The rapid growth of ships in these categories is in keeping with the Military Strategy China released in 2015 which states, "... the PLA Navy (PLAN) will gradually shift its focus from "offshore waters defense" to the combination of "offshore waters defense" with "open seas protection," and build a combined, multi-functional and efficient marine combat force structure." The launching of new ships is in addition to retiring very old ships (pre-1990) and modernizing ships build after that. U.S. Navy ships are larger, and the U.S. has more aircraft carriers - China has one active, one being fitted out and 2 (or 3) being built. We plan to go into China's aircraft carriers in depth in another book in the fall if there is enough interest. This book does not go into the ships of the PLA Navy Reserve Force, the People's Armed Police (PAP) or the China Militia (中国民). Those could be another book if there is enough interest).
