Download or read book Limnology in Australia written by P. de Deckker and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 669 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australia is the world's driest inhabited continent. Water is our limiting resource. It might therefore be thought that our water resources would be the subject of the most intensive study. Certain aspects, it must be conceded, have received much attention, notably the availability of water in terms of actual quantity. The size of the surface water and the groundwater resource is well understood and indeed receives about as much study as can reasonably be expected in a country with as sparse a population and level of scientific manpower as ours. Although the importance of understanding the water resource in terms of quantity is widely accepted, what has not been generally appreciated is that for this resource to be 'available' to human society for all the different uses to which it is put, it is not sufficient that there exists within easy reach of the end users a certain total volume of water. For that water to fulfil its functions-for agriculture, industry, the home, recreation, biological conservation-it must be in a certain state: it must conform to certain chemical, physical and biological criteria, and what has not been sufficiently appreciated in Australian society is that the condition a water is in depends very much on the ecology of the waterbody in which it resides. There are waterbodies in the world, for example high-altitude glacial lakes, which are naturally so pristine that their water could be used for any purpose without treatment.

This is their Nana's land - abundant with streams full of fish, trees laden with berries and the gentle sounds of the rainforest so far known to them only through her colorful stories. The elders test Kutabah and Warabal on this journey as they travel alone with their younger brother, Bidu, and begin their transition into the adult world. Download or read book Whitefella Jump Up written by Germaine Greer and published by Profile Books(GB). This book was released on 2004 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Race relations are one of the most fraught issues in the world. Almost everywhere in the world where different races rub against each other there is racism and friction. The problem is most acute with displaced indigenous people. White Australia - with the history of its terrible treatment of the Aborigines is an extreme case study. In this brilliant essay, Germaine Greer shows how it could, should and must be different. The problem is not the Aborigines but the 'settler society' and what it has done to the country. She shows how Australians must embrace their aboriginality. By extension the argument applies to the whole world and to the unequal relationships between people. But as always with Germaine Greer it is argued with wit, humour, anger, passion, and superbly memorable prose. Germaine Greer is worth reading on any subject; she is at her most powerful and polemical when faced with real wrongs that need righting.
Download or read book Parliamentary Zone Review written by Australia. National Capital Authority and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1998 the Commonwealth Government of Australia announced that the National Capital Authority would undertake a strategic review of the Parliamentary Zone and initiate the development of a master plan. In recent years, the public concerns about the Zone have included the lack of people spaces, problems relating to through-traffic and car parking, the physical location of major buildings from each other, the incomplete pedestrian network and the ageing of significant landscape items. The review found a growing interest in the place of indigenous culture in the National Capital as well as a desire for more historical interpretation and commemoration. As well as responding to these and other issues, the review was aimed at refreshing and promulgating the historical vision for tthe Parliamentary Zone that has the Griffin plan at its foundation.
