Book excerpt: Upon a natural terrace in such a slope to the south, stood Castle Warlock. But it turned no smiling face to the region whence came the warmth and the growth. A more grim, repellant, unlovely building would be hard to find; and yet, from its extreme simplicity, its utter indifference to its own looks, its repose, its weight, and its gray historical consciousness, no one who loved houses would have thought of calling it ugly. It was like the hard-featured face of a Scotch matron, suggesting no end of story, of life, of character: she holds a defensive if not defiant face to the world, but within she is warm, tending carefully the fires of life. The house was very old. It had been built for more kinds of shelter than need to be thought of in our days. For the enemies of our ancestors were not only the cold, and the fierce wind, and the rain, and the snow; they were men also -- enemies harder to keep out than the raging storm or the creeping frost. Hence the more hospitable a house could be, the less must it look what it was: it must wear its face haughty, and turn its smiles inward.

Book excerpt: "The two 'Warlock' titles are unique in George MacDonald lineup of novels for being first released in the U.S. a year prior to the U.K. edition, as well as being published with different titles containing two very distinct texts. Though the U.S. edition and its U.K. counterpart are of similar length, their many differences raise the obvious question why MacDonald wrote one version for publication, but then also published an altered highly edited second version" --

Book excerpt: George MacDonald's Castle Warlock is many things: a mystery, an adventure, a coming-of-age story, a celebration of the beauty of the Scottish Highlands, and a revelation of spiritual truth. At the novel's center are two unforgettable characters, young Cosmo Warlock and his father, the Laird of Glenwarlock. Michael Phillips captured the essence of this Christian classic when he wrote that "most striking of all is the love which exists between Cosmo and his aging father, in the heart of which pulsed the earliest attraction of the boy toward the heartbeat of God himself." MacDonald's extensive use of the Scots language has been a stumbling block for many readers-until now. This is the only edition of Castle Warlock that features English translations side-by-side with the complete original text. The translator, Scotsman David Jack, has provided an insightful preface and his own delightful illustrations, and the introduction is by best-selling author and preeminent MacDonald expert Michael Phillips.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Warlock O' Glenwarlock: A Homely Romance Glenwarlock, as it was also sometimes called, con sisted of three massive, narrow, tall blocks of build ing, which showed little connection with each other beyond juxtaposition, two of them standing end to end, with but a few feet of space between, and the third at right angles to the two. In the two which stood end to end, and were originally the principal parts, hardly any windows Were to be seen on the side that looked out into the valley; while in the third, which, though looking much of the same age, was of later build, were more windows, but none in the lowest story. Narrow as were these buildings, and four stories high, they had a solid, ponderous look, suggest ing a thickness of the walls such as to leave little of a hollow within for the indwellers - like great marine shells for a small mollusk. On the other side was a kind of a court, completed by the stables and cow houses, and towards this court were most of the win dows - many of them for size more like those in the cottages around, than suggestive of a house built by the lords of the soil. The court was now merely that of a farmyard. There must have been at one time outer defences to the castle, but they were no longer to be distin guished by the inexperienced eye; and indeed the windowless walls of the house itself seemed strong enough to repel any attack without artillery - except indeed the assailants had got into the court. There were however some signs of the windows there having been enlarged if not increased at a later period. Book George MacDonald A Writer s Life

Download or read book George MacDonald A Writer s Life written by Michael Phillips and published by Rosetta Books. This book was released on 2019-05-07 with total page 1015 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The leading MacDonald scholar and biographer presents the most comprehensive work to date on the 19th century author’s life and work. Best known for his fiction and fairy tales, such as the immortal classics Robert Falconer and At the Back of the North Wind, the Victorian author and theologian George MacDonald inspired some of the greatest writers of the 19th and 20th centuries. Most notably, C.S. Lewis credits MacDonald’s books with inspiring his works of fantasy fiction as well as putting him on the path to Christianity. In this major biographical work, MacDonald scholar Michael Phillips examines how the events of the author’s life contributed to his work and legacy. Referring to this volume as a “bibliographic biography,” Phillips brings his expertise to bear on the complete corpus of MacDonald’s fiction, pointing out each book’s essential themes, and offering insights into how each title can be most perceptively be read.

Book George MacDonald

Download or read book George MacDonald written by Rolland Hein and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2014-11-10 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: C. S. Lewis once remarked that his debt to George MacDonald's writings was "almost as great as one man can owe to another . . . I know hardly any other writer who seems to be closer, or more continually close, to the Spirit of Christ Himself." Born in Scotland in 1824, MacDonald was educated at King's College in Aberdeen and Highbury Seminary in London. As a Christian minister, he indulged early his fondness--and skill--in the writing of poetry, then fantasy and fiction, as well as sermons. Quickly becoming known for his literary skills, he became a popular writer and lecturer, counting among his friends and fans Lady Byron, Alfred Lord Tennyson, Mark Twain, John Ruskin, Matthew Arnold, and Lewis Carroll (who only published Alice's Adventures in Wonderland at the urging of the MacDonald family). At the time of his death in 1905, he left behind a large volume of work that has had a profound influence on many writers, including G. K. Chesterton, C. S. Lewis, J. R. R. Tolkien, Madeleine L'Engle, and Frederick Buechner. This seminal biography is based upon a careful researching of thousands of letters written to and by MacDonald as well as personal papers and documents collected in museums and libraries in America and Europe. A noted MacDonald scholar, Rolland Hein spent over a decade reading and researching these documents with a view to exploring those aspects of the life and experiences of this great author and saint that have so profoundly influenced many of the seminal authors of the twentieth century.
