Download or read book Radical Play written by Rob Goldberg and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2023-07-28 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Radical Play Rob Goldberg recovers a little-known history of American children’s culture in the 1960s and 1970s by showing how dolls, guns, action figures, and other toys galvanized and symbolized new visions of social, racial, and gender justice. From a nationwide movement to oppose the sale of war toys during the Vietnam War to the founding of the company Shindana Toys by Black Power movement activists and the efforts of feminist groups to promote and produce nonsexist and racially diverse toys, Goldberg returns readers to a defining moment in the history of childhood when politics, parenting, and purchasing converged. Goldberg traces not only how movement activists brought their progressive politics to the playroom by enlisting toys in the era’s culture wars but also how the children’s culture industry navigated the explosive politics and turmoil of the time in creative and socially conscious ways. Outlining how toys shaped and were shaped by radical visions, Goldberg locates the moment Americans first came to understand the world of toys—from Barbie to G.I. Joe—as much more than child’s play.

Book Toys Consumption and Middle class Childhood in Imperial Germany 1871 1918

Download or read book Toys Consumption and Middle class Childhood in Imperial Germany 1871 1918 written by Bryan Ganaway and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on a variety of techniques from history, anthropology and literary criticism the author argues toy consumption helped adults negotiate the transmission of middle-class values regarding modernity, technology, gender roles and nationalism to their children. Practices of consumption permitted self-fashioning from above and below; women used their control over childhood to insert themselves into political debates about the future shape of the nation at a time when they lacked the vote. Although the project to build a middle-class utopia via shopping never succeeded, millions of Germans happily bought toys at Christmas and birthdays showing their faith in the ability of modern society to make the world a better place. To understand why ordinary consumers made these choices, the book draws on a variety of sources including periodicals, trade journals, advertisements, pedagogical literature, memoirs, and toys.

Book excerpt: "WAR-TOYS is a work-in-progress photo essay that seeks to explore war from the perspective of children living in its day-to-day reality. Because cognitive ability is often ahead of language development, children typically share their experiences and cope with associated feelings through indirect methods of communication, such as art and play. As a result, their personal accounts of war often go unseen, even when studying its affects. Through WAR-TOYS, I use a collaborative process to unlock and articulate children's experiences, turning the language of play into serious dialog. In practice, boys and girls who been affected by conflict become art directors for my photographs of locally found toys, placed and posed in actual locations to recreate shared fears and witness events. Employing principles of expressive art therapy, my process begins with observation and guided interaction with children under the care of humanitarian organizations operating in areas of active conflict. Specialized therapists and local caregivers conduct art-based interviews on my behalf, inviting children to draw pictures about their lives and experiences. The resulting illustrations serve as the beginning of longer conversations and the basis for photographic exploration. Toy-surrogates are photographed in accordance to the children's descriptions, integrated through forced perspective into the actual locations where described events occurred. Commentary is given on socioeconomic conditions through the use of locally acquired toys and toy-objects, seen against the conditions in which these children live. The resulting photographs provide an interpretive document of witnessed events and context for the children's accounts"--Artist's statement.

Book excerpt: The brutal "execution" of the patriot woman of Faenza, Diamante, in violation of the laws of sanctuary, creates a division between Cesare Borgia and his sinister condottieri. Maestro Leonardo da Vinci, quietly attempting to reconcile his new profession as engineer to Cesare Borgia, with his philosophy of non violence is caught between the factions. When a sentry is strangled by a "man with strong hands," and two of the condottieri are murdered with Leonardo's own "toys of war", a wedge is driven between the artist/engineer and his patron, an alienation that could prove fatal to Leonardo. Placed under guard by Cesare, the maestro manages to send word of his plight to Niccolo of Pavia, now a Bergamini courtier. Niccolo, enlists the services of the traveling commedia dell'arte players known as I Comici Buffoni, and together they gather the information and evidence that could prove Leonardo's innocence and expose the plot behind the murders. What they learn brings Leonardo and Niccolo to the little Adriatic port of Sinigaglia, where a trap is sprung, a trap that Paolo Giovio called "il bellissimo inganno"—the "magnificent deceit." Here, too, Leonardo comes to realize that the real "toys of war" are not the battle weapons he designs for Cesare, but something much more repugnant and horrifying!

Book Toy Wars

  • Pages : 456 pages

Download or read book Toy Wars written by G. Wayne Miller and published by Crown Business. This book was released on 2012-11-21 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the real toy story, an unprecedented behind-the-scenes journey through a world of influence, fantasy, and multimillion-dollar Hollywood deals, a world where the whims of children make millionaires and topple titans. This is also the story of an unusual man. Alan Hassenfeld, the chief executive officer of Hasbro, never intended to run a Fortune 500 company. A free spirit who dreamed of being a writer and exploring Asia, he was content to remain in the shadow of his older brother Stephen, a marketing genius who transformed a family firm established by immigrant Jews into powerhouse and Wall Street darling. Then tragedy struck. Stephen, and intensely private man, died of AIDS, a disease he had not acknowledged he had, even to his family. Alan Hassenfeld was named CEO, just as Hasbro was facing a daunting onslaught of challenges. Toy Wars is about Alan's struggle to balance the demands of the bottom line with his ideals about the kind of toys children deserve, as well as the ethical obligations of management. Wayne Miller, an award-winning journalist and novelist, was granted unprecedented access to Hasbro, the maker of G.I. Joe, Star Wars toys, Mr. Potato Head, Batman, Monopoly, Scrabble, Trivial Pursuit, and countless other favorites. For five years, he sat in on design sessions, marketing meetings, and focus groups, and interviewed employees in every part of the company. He witnessed a major corporate restructuring; crucial deal with Dreamworks SKG; a hostile takeover bid by archrival Mattel; the collapse of a $45 million virtual reality game; and the company makeover of G.I. Joe, Hasbro's flagship product and one of the most popular toys of all time. Toy Wars is filled with many colorful characters, including: Hollywood moguls Steven Spielberg and George Lucas, whose kid-friendly movies can translate into licensing gold for toymakers Mighty Morphin Power Rangers creator Haim Saban, who tapped into a popular Japanese TV series and made it a worldwide television and merchandising phenomenon Mattel CEO Jill Barad, the second-highest-paid woman in corporate America, who promotes and defends Barbie with the zeal of a religious crusader Hasbro executive Al Verrecchia, the loyal second in command who did not let friendship or tradition stand in the way of a dramatic restructuring Larry Bernstein, arguably the best toy salesman ever, a riotous raconteur whose divisional presidency crumbled when he was unable to meet Hasbro's profit goals Rich in family drama and written with sly wit, Toy Wars is a deeply compelling business story, a fascinating tour through a billion-dollar industry that exerts tremendous influence on the lives of children everywhere.

Download or read book Anticipating Total War written by Manfred F. Boemeke and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1999-03-28 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in Anticipating Total War explore the discourse on war in Germany and the United States between 1871 and 1914. The concept of "total war" provides the analytical focus. The essays reveal vigorous discussions of warfare in several forums among soldiers, statesmen, women's groups, and educators on both sides of the Atlantic. Predictions of long, cataclysmic wars were not uncommon in these discussions, while the involvement of German and American soldiers in colonial warfare suggested that future combat would not spare civilians. Despite these "anticipations of total war," virtually no one realized the practical implications in planning for war in the early twentieth century.
