This is an OCR edition with typos. Excerpt from book: THE GREAT MOTIVE. COLONIZATION. But another object had a still greater influence in enforcing and directing the accomplishment of my general purpose. The American scheme of African Colonization had been a subject familiar to me from my childhood; I was a devotedly confident believer in its utility, justice and feasibility; and in a small way, I was for some time a public promoter of it. In this connexion, I soon learned that the want of competent men to carry out the scheme in Africa as it was planned in America, and to give faithful accounts of its actual progress and difficulties there, had always been a great obstacle to its success, both there and here; and, from the mortality, this had at last become almost fatal to the enterprise. It naturally occurred to me then, that by a combination of this special object with my general one, I might achieve a double yet consistent purpose, in each part of which I should not only gratify my own tastes and desires, but advance the knowledge and good of mankind. This notion soon became my determinaiion; and as early as ihe year 1834, I was willing and anxious to engage in this emerprise, in any way in which I could be serviceable to the Colonization cause. The way and means soon suggested themselves. I was already a student of medicine as a science; yet for the practice of it as a profession or business, I felt a distaste almost amounting to abhorrence.? But the African scheme gave this pursuit a new value, and made it desirable that I should complete my medical course with due qualifications for actual practice, on the coast of West Africa. This was soon accomplished. This professional equipment not only armed me for the chief dangers which had at first altogether deter- ed me even from the thoughts of African adventure, but gave ano...

Book The African Roots of Marijuana

Download or read book The African Roots of Marijuana written by Chris S. Duvall and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-09 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After arriving from South Asia approximately a thousand years ago, cannabis quickly spread throughout the African continent. European accounts of cannabis in Africa—often fictionalized and reliant upon racial stereotypes—shaped widespread myths about the plant and were used to depict the continent as a cultural backwater and Africans as predisposed to drug use. These myths continue to influence contemporary thinking about cannabis. In The African Roots of Marijuana, Chris S. Duvall corrects common misconceptions while providing an authoritative history of cannabis as it flowed into, throughout, and out of Africa. Duvall shows how preexisting smoking cultures in Africa transformed the plant into a fast-acting and easily dosed drug and how it later became linked with global capitalism and the slave trade. People often used cannabis to cope with oppressive working conditions under colonialism, as a recreational drug, and in religious and political movements. This expansive look at Africa's importance to the development of human knowledge about marijuana will challenge everything readers thought they knew about one of the world's most ubiquitous plants.

Book excerpt: A pathbreaking history of how participants in the slave trade influenced the growth and dissemination of medical knowledge As the slave trade brought Europeans, Africans, and Americans into contact, diseases were traded along with human lives. Manuel Barcia examines the battle waged against disease, where traders fought against loss of profits while enslaved Africans fought for survival. Although efforts to control disease and stop epidemics from spreading brought little success, the medical knowledge generated by people on both sides of the conflict contributed to momentous change in the medical cultures of the Atlantic world.

Book The Foulahs of Central Africa and the African Slave Trade

Download or read book The Foulahs of Central Africa and the African Slave Trade written by William Brown Hodgson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Foulahs of Central Africa, and the African Slave Trade "with much interest; as, possibly, one of my "fields of enterprise. Every thing relating to "that subject, thenceforth, acquired a peculiar "value to my mind. All books of travels, maps, "scientific and medical works, that could give me "any new ideas of Africa, were carefully sought "and read, and faithfully studied." Such is the view of Atlantic and Central Africa, presented by this extract, from the first part of a remarkable book which is now being published here, entitled, "Wanderings on the Seas and Shores of Africa," by Dr. D. Francis Bacon. Such, too, is the sentiment of the philosophic Heeren, who says that "geheimnissvoll dunkel," - mysterious darkness, has ever, from the earliest ages, opposed the curiosity of man, to investigate the condition of this continent. The ethnographic portion of Dr. Bacon's work will be contained in the future numbers of his serial. Meanwhile, I propose, by anticipation, to submit to the National Institute, some remarks upon that widely spread people of Soudan, or Central Africa, called Foulahs or Fellatahs. Throughout the whole extent of Nigritia or Negro-land, the Foulahs undoubtedly occupy preeminence. They are found spread over a vast geographic region of 28 to 30 degrees in longitude, 1500 miles - and of 7 to 10 in latitude, or 500 miles.
