Book excerpt: Perfect for enthusiasts of women's stories, postwar photo-journalism and art. This compelling narrative encompasses a mother's- and her daughter's-first-person accounts of struggle: the American wife finding her place in the rubble of battle-torn Germany, and the daughter relaying her version of the same story. Virginia Fontaine was brought up with all the moral fortitude of her Midwest German immigrant parents but also went against the norms by marrying an artist and agreeing to live in Germany in 1946. There, Virginia fought for her status as a problem solver, photographer, art curator, and correspondent of her experiences amid her ever-changing constellation of artists and friends who survived the war. Working with the military wasn't always easy either. In this part personal history, part art survey, readers are given a front-row seat to Virginia's artistic pursuits and cultivations as well as her resilience amid the challenges and times of postwar Europe.

Book Wanderings Before the War Classic Reprint

Download or read book Wanderings Before the War Classic Reprint written by W. R. Stather Hunt and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wanderings Before the War The material for this account was collected during the early months of 1908, and was arranged in the few spare moments of the next two and a half years. The book as it stands represents that material without any alteration or enlargement suggested by subsequent events; for example, in the chapters dealing with Serbia and the Provinces I was scrupulously careful to confine myself to the results of my own observation and to avoid any suggestion of the great change caused by the Annexation or of the increased harshness of the Austrian rule. The book was finished in June, 1911, but owing to the onset of a very long and severe illness, I took no steps toward? having it published for some considerable time. On reading it through after the lapse of four years, I find that any attempt at revision would need more time and labour than my health permits, and therefore mistakes remain which I would have wished to correct. For one of these I feel bound to apologise. Throughout I looked upon the Germans, as distinct from the Prussians, as a friendly nation. At the time of writing I believed that when the war came there would be no virulence on either side, except on the part of the Prussians. I am ashamed of the mistake, as I ought to have formed a better idea of the influence of Treitschke on all classes of the German Empire. Book Camp and Studio Classic Reprint

Download or read book Camp and Studio Classic Reprint written by Irving Montagu and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Camp and Studio These rambling reminiscences pretend to nothing more than they are. Those who would have military detail or political point will find it elsewhere. Camp and Studio may be read as a distinct work, or in the light of a sequel to Wanderings of a War Artist, the early experiences introduced into that book being balanced by the later ones to be found in the present volume. Having trodden the war-path together, I would ask those who are sufficiently in accord with me to join me in Bohemia, that I may afford them a glimpse behind the shifting scenes of artistic life, thus conveying to them some idea of my doings at home as well as abroad. May I also be permitted to say to those who are inclined to suppose any of these experiences extravagant, that not only must the circumstances be taken into consideration but, since fact is often so much stranger than fiction, that it has never been necessary to go beyond its limits. Book excerpt: When Brigadier James Phelan returns from Afghanistan with the body of a young soldier killed under his command, he is traumatised by the tragedy. An encounter with young Sydney tattoo artist Kira leaves him with a permanent tribute to the soldier, but it is a meeting that will change the course of his life. What he isn't expecting is a campaign of retribution from the soldiers who blame him for the ambush and threaten his career. With his marriage also on the brink, his life spirals out of control. Years later, Phelan is surprised when Kira re-enters his life seeking refuge from her own troubles and with a young son in tow. She finds a way to help him make peace with his past, but she is still on the run from her own. The War Artist is a timely and compelling novel about the legacy of war, the power of art and the possibility of redemption.

Book excerpt: During the Vietnam War Bao Ninh served with the Glorious 27th Youth Brigade. Of the five hundred men who went to war with the brigade in 1969, he is one of only ten who survived. The Sorrow of War is his autobiographical novel. Kien works in a unit that recovers soldiers' corpses. Revisiting the sites of battles raises emotional ghosts for him and the memory of war scenes are juxtaposed with dreams and remembrances of his childhood sweetheart. The Sorrow of War burns the tragedy of war in our minds.
