Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wanderings Among the High Alps It has always appeared to me that ladies might see much more of the grander scenery of the High Alps than they usually do and it will be a pleasure to me, if I have succeeded in showing, by the instances recorded in the following pages, how much it is really practicable, with due care and suficient precautions, for one of the gentler sex to undertake. The expedition which forms the subject of Chapter II is as feasible for any other lady, as for the lady who actually performed it - who is a fair, but by no means a particularly good, walker. Excerpt: ...we met the lengthening shadows of the setting sun, cast upon us from the Gornergrat and the Hochthaligrat; then, at last, we pulled off our spectacles, and had the pleasure of an uninterrupted view of the beautiful scenes around us. Still, not a cloud was visible, in the whole expanse of the blue and transparent sky. We descended very rapidly, till we came to a zig-zag path above the valley of St. Nicholas, when I reminded the cure of the chase he had led us, last year, in descending upon Tasch, and challenging him to another race, started off full pelt down the steep mountain side, through a thick wood of larch and fir, with the whole train at my heels. We gave Cachat another warming, at which the cure again made himself merry; and, after some hairbreadth escapes of severe falls, over stumps of trees and holes and blocks of stone, we all found ourselves in tht valley in an incredibly short space of time. We cam down many hundreds of feet, in almost as little time as ii has taken to record it. We had still a pleasant stroll o a quarter of an hour over the meadows, and reachec Zermatt comfortably at a little before seven, haviri occupied nine hours in the descent. No better illustration can be given of the extent to which the difficulties and dangers of an Alpine pass depend upon the state of the snow and the weather, than was afforded by our passages of the Allelein glacier and of the Col Iinseng. The risks of the approach to the Allelein glacier, which, in 1852, appeared formidable even to experienced guides, had all but vanished in 1853; the dangers often arising from hidden crevasses had no existence; the serious fatigue of traversing the broad wastes of glacier, two or three feet deep in fresh or sodden snow, was reduced to that which...

Download or read book 100 Hut Walks in the Alps written by Kev Reynolds and published by Cicerone Press Limited. This book was released on 2014-05-06 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This popular guidebook by expert Kev Reynolds describes 100 day walks focusing on the mountain huts of the Alps. With walks in France, Switzerland, Italy, Austria and Slovenia, there are routes to suit every taste - from gentle and undemanding to long and tough, as well as all varieties of difficulty in between. What they have in common is a visit to a hut, each with its own character. Some walks are perfect for lunch at a hut before a return to the valley base, others involve an overnight stay at a hut. In a few cases, a short hut-to-hut tour is suggested. The routes are grouped by country and by specific Alpine district. Most of the routes avoid any climbing of a technical nature, beyond the odd scramble aided by a fixed rope. Notes on hut etiquette, what to take and an English-French-German-Italian glossary are also included to help trekkers get the most out of their time in the Alps.

Book Schlepping Through the Alps

Download or read book Schlepping Through the Alps written by Sam Apple and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2009-01-16 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hans Breuer, Austria’s only wandering shepherd, is also a Yiddish folksinger. He walks the Alps, shepherd’s stick in hand, singing lullabies to his 625 sheep. Sometimes he even gives concerts in historically anti-Semitic towns, showing slides of the flock as he belts out Yiddish ditties. When New York-based writer Sam Apple hears about this one-of-a-kind eccentric, he flies overseas and signs on as a shepherd’s apprentice. For thoroughly urban, slightly neurotic Sam, stumbling along in borrowed boots and burdened with a lot more baggage than his backpack, the task is far from a walk in Central Park. Demonstrating no immediate natural talent for shepherding, he tries to earn the respect of Breuer’s sheep, while keeping a safe distance from the shepherd’s fierce herding dogs. As this strange and hilarious adventure unfolds, the unlikely duo of Sam and Hans meander through a paradise of woods and high meadows toward awkward encounters with Austrians of many stripes. Apple is determined to find out if there are really as many anti-Semites in Austria as he fears and to understand how Hans, who grew up fighting the lingering Nazism in Vienna, became a wandering shepherd. What Apple discovers turns out to be far more fascinating than he had imagined. With this odd and wonderful book, Sam Apple joins the august tradition of Tony Horwitz and Bill Bryson. Schlepping Through the Alps is as funny as it is moving.

Download or read book Killing Dragons written by Fergus Fleming and published by Open Road + Grove/Atlantic. This book was released on 2007-12-01 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A “dramatic and masterful” account of early alpine explorers and the challenges they faced to scale the summits (Anthony Brandt, National Geographic Adventure). In a riveting narrative of daredevils and eccentrics, Fergus Fleming gives us the breathtaking story of some of history’s greatest explorers as they conquer the soaring peaks of the Alps. Fleming recounts the incredible exploits of the men whose centuries-old fear of the mountain range turned quickly to curiosity, then to obsession, as they explored Europe’s frozen wilderness. In the late eighteenth century, French and Swiss scientists became interested in the Alps as a research destination, but in the 1850s the focus changed: the icy mountains now offered an all-out competition for British climbers who wanted to conquer ever higher and more impossible heights, and explorers fought each other on the peaks and in the press, entertaining a vast public smitten with their bravery, delighted by their personal animosities, and horrified by the disasters that befell them. “Fleming attacks his theme with verve, mining entertainment from eccentric Alpinists, sensational ascents and grisly accidents.” —Food and Travel Magazine
