Book Supplying War

  • Author : Martin van Creveld
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 1977
  • ISBN : 9780521297936
  • Pages : 304 pages

Download or read book Supplying War written by Martin van Creveld and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1977 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why did Napoleon succeed in 1805 but fail in 1812? Were the railways vital to Prussia's victory over France in 1870? Was the famous Schlieffen Plan militarily sound? Could the European half of World War II have been ended in 1944? These are only a few of the questions that form the subject-matter of this meticulously researched, lively book. Drawing on a very wide range of unpublished and previously unexploited sources, Martin van Creveld examines the 'nuts and bolts' of war: namely, those formidable problems of movement and supply, transportation and administration, so often mentioned - but rarely explored - by the vast majority of books on military history. In doing so he casts his net far and wide, from Gustavus Adolphus to Rommel, from Marlborough to Patton, subjecting the operations of each to a thorough analysis from a fresh and unusual point of view. The result is a fascinating book that has something new to say about virtually every one of the most important campaigns waged in Europe during the last two centuries.

Book excerpt: Neil Fox has made a fortune off the "head we win/tails you lose" venture capital deals negotiated by his brother, costing him almost everything but money. His ex-wife and daughter spurn him, and he lost his young son years ago. He now lives a carefully plotted life, working as a lawyer at a small investment-banking firm and spending nights at home with a drink. When the affable Bud Younger moves in next door--on a parcel that Neil had sold off--Neil takes an almost instant dislike to him. Bud is nearly everything Neil is not--a gregarious, energetic striver loved by his intact family. When Bud asks Neil to fund a new business venture, he reluctantly accepts, setting in motion events that hurtle to a startling and haunting conclusion. The Arriviste delves into the psyche of avarice and envy, presenting a portrait of a man both ordinary and monstrous.

Book The Robbers and Wallenstein

Download or read book The Robbers and Wallenstein written by F. Lamport and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 1979-11-22 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Friedrich Schiller (1759-1805) was one of the most influential of all playwrights, the author of deeply moving dramas that explored human fears, desires and ideals. Written at the age of twenty-one, The Robbers was his first play. A passionate consideration of liberty, fraternity and deep betrayal, it quickly established his fame throughout Germany and wider Europe. Wallenstein, produced nineteen years later, is regarded as Schiller's masterpiece: a deeply moving exploration of a flawed general's struggle to bring the Thirty Years War to an end against the will of his Emperor. Depicting the deep corruption caused by constant fighting between Protestants and Catholics, it is at once a meditation on the unbounded possible strength of humanity, and a tragic recognition of what can happen when men allow themselves to be weak.

Book Mount Shasta Sightings

Download or read book Mount Shasta Sightings written by Brian David Wallenstein and published by Universal Template. This book was released on 2012-12 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mount Shasta is number 13 out of 300 for UFO sighting Hot Spots. There must be some logical explanation. This book explores the history, background, reviews and reported sightings to MUFON, Project Blue-Book, Nicap and inviting the community to disclose long standing secrets to the author, which they did, that further confirms the existence of UFO activity in Mt. Shasta and the immediate surrounding areas. We found blacked-out, classified sightings, were able to get current testimony and findings to some of the most shocking events never disclosed until now. This book synthesizes the local phenomena to the larger pattern existing on our planet that can only arrive at the startling conclusion, that we are not alone and that the seeming agenda of these mysterious friends, is one of helping planet earth's children remember their origins and find a deeper connection to our galactic home and free our species from the monkey grip of fear and oppression imposed by our own hands. Unfortunately this data does little good if there are systems in place to stop the dissemination of this beneficial information by those who for their own reasons, desire to keep our race in the dark. Along with never revealed sightings involving local police officers, forest service employees and people from all walks of life, some of these sightings were deliberately blacked out for their indisputable credibility of which, the truth was revealed. Some of the secret reasons of non-disclosure are examined in the book, from already found artifacts of our parent off-world race, their long standing presence here and on the moon, is kept from us deliberately by the secret space program, and that is only skimming the surface. It is high time as shareholders of this planet, we be informed to the company agenda, all of it! This book at least, can help take you part way there. One of our Presidents also has allegedly visited Mars several times and was educated up here in Siskiyou County by DARPA's Mars Visitation Program trainers. The class and times had been confirmed by the Author. This volume has been decades in the making and offers an incredible informative chronology based on fact and observations of thousands. It is a must read for any curious origin seeking person, who knows that the universe is far too large and full of life to limit the neighborhood to just this planet. It is packed with over 600 pages of relevant information bound to inform you.

Book Textual Transformations

Download or read book Textual Transformations written by Tessa Whitehouse and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-12-12 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early modern books were not stable or settled outputs of the press but dynamic shape-changers, subject to reworking, re-presentation, revision, and reinterpretation. Their history is often the history of multiple, sometimes competing, agencies as their texts were re-packaged, redirected, and transformed in ways that their original authors might hardly recognize. Processes of editing, revision, redaction, selection, abridgement, glossing, disputation, translation, and posthumous publication resulted in a textual elasticity and mobility that could dissolve distinctions between text and paratexts, textuality and intertextuality, manuscript and print, author and reader or editor, such that title and author's name are no longer sufficient pointers to a book's identity or contents. This collection brings together original essays by an international team of eminent scholars in the field of book history that explore these various kinds of textual inconstancy and variability. The essays are alive to the impact of commercial and technological aspects of book production and distribution (discussing, for example, the career of the pre-eminent bookseller John Nourse, the market appeal of abridgements, and the financial incentives to posthumous publication), but their interest is also in the many additional forms of agency that shaped texts and their meanings as books were repurposed to articulate, and respond to, a variety of cultural and individual needs. They engage with early modern religious, political, philosophical, and scholarly trends and debates as they discuss a wide range of genres and kinds of publication including fictional and non-fictional prose, verse miscellanies, abridgements, sermons, religious controversy, and of authors including Lucy Hutchinson, Richard Baxter, John Dryden, Thomas Burnet, John Tillotson, Henry Maundrell, Jonathan Swift, Samuel Richardson, John Wesley, and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. The result is a richly diverse collection that demonstrates the embeddedness of the book trade in the cultural dynamics of early modernity.
