Welsh Affairs Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2014 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report calls on VisitBritain and Visit Wales to jointly develop, by February 2015, a coherent strategy for promoting Wales as a first choice destination for international visitors to the UK. While the current number of international tourists to Wales remains below pre-2006 levels, there is substantial potential for growth in Wales' tourism market. Wales has some of the most spectacular landscape in Britain and Europe, a unique culture, language and history, dynamic cities, and offers a range of activities and a high quality of life. Wales' potential as a tourist destination is being undersold and there is concern that Wales still has a low profile overseas compared to other parts of the UK The tourism bodies Wales need to grasp this opportunity and maximise Wales' potential as a destination. UKTI should be mandated to begin to address the great disparities in wealth and investment across the UK, and the Committee calls for a dedicated Welsh trade promotion agency, to drive inward investment into Wales. Wales has masses of unfulfilled potential for increasing tourism. The responsible agencies in Cardiff and London and the respective Ministers need to work together more to maximise opportunities

Book In the Shadow of the Pulpit

Download or read book In the Shadow of the Pulpit written by M. Wynn Thomas and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2009-10-15 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ranging from the nineteenth-century to the present, this book explores several central aspects of the ways in which the English-language poetry and fiction of Wales has responded to what was, for a crucial period of a century or so, the dominant culture of Wales: the culture of Welsh Nonconformity. In the introduction, the author reflects on why no sustained attempt has hitherto been made to investigate one of the formative cultural influences on modern 'Anglo-Welsh' literature, the Nonconformist inheritance. The importance of addressing this strange and significant cultural deficit is then explained, and a preliminary attempt made to capture something of the spirit of Welsh Nonconformity. The succeeding chapters address and seek to answer such questions as: What exactly did the Welsh chapels believe and do? Why have the English-language writers of Wales, from Caradoc Evans and Dylan Thomas to R.S. Thomas and the authors of today, been so fascinated by them? How accurate are the impressions we've been given of chapel life and chapel people in the English-language poetry and fiction of Wales? The answers offered may alter our views both of the Welsh Nonconformist past and of Welsh writing in English. One of the ideas advanced is that many of Wales' most important writers went to war with the preachers in their texts, and that their work is therefore the site of cultural struggle. Theirs was a war in words waged to determine who would have the last word on modern Welsh experience.

Book excerpt: "What Wales is doing today, the world will do tomorrow.”—Nikhil Seth, UN Assistant Secretary General The story of how one small nation responded to global climate issues by radically rethinking public policy for future generations In #futuregen, Jane Davidson explains how, as Minister for Environment, Sustainability and Housing in Wales, she proposed the Well-being of Future Generations (Wales) Act 2015—the first piece of legislation on Earth to place regenerative and sustainable practice at the heart of government. Unparalleled in its scope and vision, the Act connects environmental and social health and looks to solve complex issues such as poverty, education and unemployment. Davidson reveals how and why such groundbreaking legislation was forged in Wales—once reliant on its coal, iron and steel industries—and explores how the shift from economic growth to sustainable growth is creating new opportunities for communities and governments all over the world. #futuregen is the inspiring story of a small, pioneering nation discovering prosperity through its vast natural beauty, renewable energy resources and resilient communities. It’s a living, breathing prototype for local and global leaders as proof of what is possible in the fight for a sustainable future.
