Book Signalman Jones

Download or read book Signalman Jones written by Tim Parker and published by Sheridan House. This book was released on 2010-11-25 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1939, young English naval signalman Geoffrey Holder-Jones began his career by surviving a German mine attack in the Thames estuary. World War II took him as naval officer to Iceland, the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen, and the United States. Commissioned as a naval officer and given command of his own ship, Jones then patrolled the waters off Canada and Newfoundland before returning to Britain in 1944. This true story, written on the basis of personal conversations and a scrapbook entrusted to the author 60 years after the war, illuminates one of the great achievements of the war the beating of the German U-boat blockade of the American coast by squadrons of Allied ships that were little more than motley collections of armed trawlers and whalers. With a sense of humor and decency that sustained him through the ordeals of convoy duty in the Arctic Ocean, Signalman Jones has related his story to Tim Parker with vivid observations and an eye for the absurd.

Book From Dunkirk to D Day

Download or read book From Dunkirk to D Day written by Jeff Steel and published by Pen and Sword Military. This book was released on 2024-07-30 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bill Adlam’s hair-raising escape from Dunkirk, his dramatic commando raids and his storming the D-Day beaches reads like fiction. But it all happened. Bill escaped the Dunkirk disaster via a bayonet charge into Nazi machine guns. He was presented with the Military Medal ‘for gallantry under fire’ by King George VI. Later, Bill volunteered for commandos: he thrived on adrenaline. Number 4 Commando took him to a surgical strike in the north of Norway. The stated objective: to destroy oil installations. It was a feint. Ian Fleming of the Secret Intelligence Service had masterminded the raid. Its objective: to help break the Enigma Code. Number 4 Commando then sent him on a raid to Dieppe in August 1942 to spike naval guns to enable a landing by Canadian forces. Bill’s commanding officer was Lord Lovat: cousin to Ian Fleming and (allegedly) template for the fictional James Bond. Bill’s prowess as a commando saw him headhunted to a top secret location in the wilds of Scotland. Here he trained others in the dark arts of ‘butcher and bolt’. On the morning o 6 June 1944, D-Day, Bill passed over the sands of Normandy in minutes. The next two months saw him up against Hitler’s elite army and Waffen SS divisions. The reader will ask the same question that Bill asked: how would he ever come out alive?

Book Hollywood Gossip books 1 2 and 3 boxset

Download or read book Hollywood Gossip books 1 2 and 3 boxset written by Kristina Adams and published by Kristina Adams. This book was released on with total page 937 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: They’re rich, they’re famous, and they’re about to fall apart… From Kristina Adams, author of the bestselling What Happens in… series comes the first book in the prequel companion series Hollywood Gossip. Jump back in time to when Tate and Jack were in their late teens, trying to transition from child stars to megastars. Follow them on their journey as they become friends, enemies, and lovers alongside familiar faces from the What Happens in Hollywood Universe and new ones you’re going to love. Hollywood Gossip Jack I never had anything, growing up. I was a homeless orphan doing what I could to survive. One night, I got lucky DJing and a record label hired me. My first album took off, but I can’t seem to replicate its success. So instead, I drink. And I party. And I do whatever else I can to avoid my problems. Until she walked in. Tate’s like no one else I’ve ever met. She’s obsessed with her work. But that’s not why I’m drawn to her. She’s funny, she’s sexy, and she’s one of the smartest people I’ve ever met. And I think she hates me. I mean, I don’t blame her. We couldn’t be more different. But what if…she didn’t hate me? Could our workplace collaboration turn into something more, or am I living in a romantic fantasy? Tate What’s it really like to grow up rich and famous? Pressure. So much pressure. Unbelievable, inescapable pressure. My whole life has been about building my brand as an actor and singer. Reaching the top of the Hollywood ladder. I will not let anyone screw it up. Not even Jack. He’s talented, sure, but his work ethic is practically non-existent. I have no time for people like him. Yet I’m weirdly drawn to him and I can’t work out why. He’s so different to anyone else I’ve ever met, so completely outside of my celebrity bubble. It’s refreshing. But it’s also dangerous. He could completely ruin everything I’ve spent my whole life building. Am I about to screw up my whole life for one guy? For one chance at love? Hollywood Parents Tate My parents are divorcing after 30 years of marriage. Oh, and I just accidentally found out I’m adopted. Cue identity crisis. With parents who won’t stop arguing, an ex-boyfriend I can’t stop thinking about, a sexy Texan model I’ve treated terribly, and a career on the rocks, it’s no understatement to say that my chipper demeanour is under threat. But I can totally handle it. Can’t I?! Jack Life isn’t nearly as fun as I wait to be. I think my best friend might be turning into my best frenemies. But how can I be sure? It’s hard to work out when I’m also battling a gruelling touring schedule and might lose my house. All things considered, I think I’m handling everything pretty well. Aren’t I? Hollywood Drama Tate I’m so sick of everyone seeing me as—and treating me like—a child star. I’m in my twenties! I’m not a child anymore. So I’m leaving. My management company. My record label. And the country. It’s time for a fresh start. If only the rest of the world agreed… Jack I’ve officially made it as a DJ—I’m doing a residency in Ibiza! It doesn’t get much better than spending the summer surrounded by music, sunshine, and parties. But can I resist the never-ending supply of drink and drugs in the clubbing capital of Europe? And what does spending the summer away from Tate mean for our relationship? If you’re looking for a serial will they/won’t they romantic drama about love, hate, and the pressures of fame, you won’t find one that’s more of a rollercoaster read than this. For fans of Marian Keyes or Paige Toon, this is the first book in an on/off love story featuring strong language, detailed descriptions of mental health conditions, and found family.

Book The Language of Mothers

Download or read book The Language of Mothers written by Rain Wright and published by Running Wild, LLC. This book was released on 2025-02-12 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Language of Mothers is a hybrid memoir grounded in the power of prose and poetry. It is an imaginative tapestry of women' s storytelling that punctures narrative craft to illuminate the inheritance of domestic trauma and the voicing of familial stories that are healing spaces that carry through time. The Language of Mothers is about two mothers caught in abusive relationships, impoverished with children, with few avenues of escape. These stories shed light on the culture of American motherhood as a failure for women, perpetuating a system of patriarchal ideals that only values the nuclear family as whole spaces of abundance, love, and worth. At nineteen, Rain Wright' s mother left Dronfield, England, traveling through Europe before landing in New York in the turbulent 1960s. Swept up in the changing societal wave, Elizabeth, her mother travels to California, where she meets her future abuser, Rain' s father. This memoir is the story of Elizabeth' s courageous escape with three young children, and it is the story of Rain' s escape decades later. The Language of Mothers navigates the inheritance of trauma, finding that storytelling and art, for both women, become the impetus for healing. Elizabeth packs her children' s belongings in black plastic bags and hides them in the brush along Elk Ridge Road, in California, making her daring escape with the help of friends and an ex-lover. She flies with her children across an ocean to the safety of Hawai?i, where she finds art, lomi lomi, music, and security. After Elizabeth' s passing from breast cancer in 1996, her stories, inherited from years of car rides around Hawai?i Island, are the language of mythmaking. The Language of Mothers is an intimate look at why women stay too long in abusive relationships and an act of defiance and regenerative love. Rain' s story is a tapestry of early childhood trauma as witness to her mother' s abuse, domestic terror at the hands of her children' s father, and her own escape narrative. The Language of Mothers deeply sees the aftereffects of domestic abuse, including her eldest daughter' s suicide attempts, her middle daughter' s strive for perfection, and her youngest daughter' s need for control through anorexia. Women' s stories can heal. Rain interweaves traumatic parts of her past but recounts acts of love, telling her daughters stories and becoming their storyteller.

Book The Road to Ruins

Download or read book The Road to Ruins written by Ian Graham and published by UNM Press. This book was released on 2011-03-16 with total page 812 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For anyone who ever wanted to be an archaeologist, Ian Graham could be a hero. This lively memoir chronicles Graham's career as the "last explorer" and a fierce advocate for the protection and preservation of Maya sites and monuments across Mexico, Guatemala, and Belize. It is also full of adventure and high society, for the self-deprecating Graham traveled to remote lands such as Afghanistan in wonderful company. He tells entertaining stories about his encounters with a host of notables beginning with Rudyard Kipling, a family friend from Graham's childhood.Born in 1923 into an aristocratic family descended from Oliver Cromwell, Ian Graham was educated at Winchester, Cambridge, and Trinity College, Dublin. His career in Mesoamerican archaeology can be said to have begun in 1959 when he turned south in his Rolls Royce and began traveling through the Maya lowlands photographing ruins. He has worked as an artist, cartographer, and photographer, and has mapped and documented inscriptions at hundreds of Maya sites, persevering under rugged field conditions. Graham is best known as the founding director of the Corpus of Maya Hieroglyphic Inscriptions Program at the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology, Harvard University. He was awarded a MacArthur Foundation "genius grant" in 1981, and he remained the Maya Corpus program director until his retirement in 2004. Graham's careful recordings of Maya inscriptions are often credited with making the deciphering of Maya hieroglyphics possible. But it is the romance of his work and the graceful conversational style of his writing that make this autobiography must reading not just for Mayanists but for anyone with a taste for the adventure of archaeology.
