Book excerpt: Vivian Maylor can’t sleep. Maybe it’s because she just broke up with her boyfriend and moved to a new town, or it could be the stress of her new job at the hospital. But perhaps it’s because her dreams have started to bleed through into her waking hours. All of her life Vivian has rejected her mother’s insane ramblings about Dreamworlds for concrete science and fact, until an emergency room patient ranting about dragons spontaneously combusts before her eyes—forcing Viv to consider the idea that her visions of mythical beasts might be real. And when a chance encounter leads her to a man she knows only from her dreams, Vivian finds herself falling into a world that seems strange and familiar all at once—a world where the line between dream and reality is hard to determine, and hard to control…
Download or read book The Eloquent Blood written by Manon Hedenborg White and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-10-14 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the conventional dichotomy of chaste, pure Madonna and libidinous whore, the former has usually been viewed as the ideal form of femininity. However, there is a modern religious movement in which the negative stereotype of the harlot is inverted and exalted. The Eloquent Blood focuses on the changing construction of femininity and feminine sexuality in interpretations of the goddess Babalon. A central deity in Thelema, the religion founded by the notorious British occultist Aleister Crowley (1875-1947), Babalon is based on Crowley's favorable reinterpretation of the biblical Whore of Babylon, and is associated with liberated female sexuality and the spiritual ideal of passionate union with existence. Analyzing historical and contemporary written sources, qualitative interviews, and ethnographic fieldwork in the Anglo-American esoteric milieu, the study traces interpretations of Babalon from the works of Crowley and some of his key disciples--including the rocket scientist John "Jack" Whiteside Parsons, and the enigmatic British occultist Kenneth Grant--until the present. From the 1990s onwards, this study shows, female and LGBTQ esotericists have challenged historical interpretations of Babalon, drawing on feminist and queer thought and conceptualizing femininity in new ways. Tracing the trajectory of a particular gendered symbol from the fin-de-siècle until today, Manon Hedenborg White explores the changing role of women in Western esotericism, and shows how evolving constructions of gender have shaped the development of esotericism. Combining research on historical and contemporary Western esotericism with feminist and queer theory, the book sheds new light on the ways in which esoteric movements and systems of thought have developed over time in relation to political movements.

Eighteen-year-old Nate, on the other hand, is a wannabe archaeologist, expecting the school trip of a lifetime, but ending up the companion of Volnar, the Shadow Night Lord. Nate’s mission, preordained by the past, was to protect Volnar from the last and ultimate threat to the three worlds by the Dreamhaters, servants of the Vootarns. Primed only through his dreams, Nate is guided to Sublin by Ophellia, daughter of Lord Kustos and Lady Jasmine. To reach their final destination and deliver Volnar to the Tukarak, they must first defeat Ceedar of the Netha World. The bridge between all realities was created within the Vootan Empire, where few venture and even less return. During this assignment, Nate is joined by several warriors picked up during his adventures. Ultimately, however, it is his destiny that forces him to take the path laid out before him: to stop Ceedar returning Volnar to his former glory and re-igniting the definitive downfall of all of existence. Download or read book Dream Life Wake Life written by Gordon G. Globus and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1987-01-09 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Attempts to understand the human condition through dreaming reach back to antiquity, especially in such classical Indian philosophical texts as the Rg Veda and the Upanisads. In a more contemporary vein, Dream Life, Wake Life continues this investigation, as it views the dream as an open window on the waking human condition. The book discusses the major twentieth-century contributions to dream theory, beginning with Freud's 1900 psychoanalytical theory of dreaming and continuing through Jung's transpersonal and Boss's existential approaches. Recent phenomenological, cognitive, and biological developments are also considered. Dream Life, Wake Life addresses human creativity as illuminated by dreaming. While Freud held a "transformative" view of dreaming in which dream life is secondhand, formed by combining memory traces of diverse past waking experiences into novel compositions, Gordon G. Globus sees the process as creative, the fundamental creative action inherent in the human condition.
