Book excerpt: A real-life thriller -- the true story of the unheralded American who brought the Barbary Pirates to their knees. In an attempt to stop the legendary Barbary Pirates of North Africa from hijacking American ships, William Eaton set out on a secret mission to overthrow the government of Tripoli. The operation was sanctioned by President Thomas Jefferson, who at the last moment grew wary of "intermeddling" in a foreign government and sent Eaton off without proper national support. Short on supplies, given very little money and only a few men, Eaton and his mission seemed doomed from the start. He triumphed against all odds, recruited a band of European mercenaries in Alexandria, and led them on a march across the Libyan Desert. Once in Tripoli, the ragtag army defeated the local troops and successfully captured Derne, laying the groundwork for the demise of the Barbary Pirates. Now, Richard Zacks brings this important story of America's first overseas covert op to life.

Download or read book Only God Knows Why written by R.C. Parsons and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Glancing ‘round the kitchen, I decided to make the most of my unexpected holiday. Instead of dressing for work in my drab olive-green Get Go outfit, I walked into the bedroom and grabbed a pair of faded old blue jeans and a white summer tank. I steered my butt into the bathroom and stood silently, questioning my appearance in the mirror. Lord. Living like this is really aging me. I’m forty-six years old, and all this shit’s making me look like sixty. Grabbing my makeup bag, I did a quick Chinese slap-chop-suey on my face, finishing up with a lick of Latin lipstick. Ahhhh, not so bad with the cover-up. Gee, I seem to have dropped a few years. Why, I bet I could now pass for, let’s see? Forty-five? Fifty? Laughing as I slipped my boots on, I tossed my old leather jacket over my arm for later and decided to head down to the local watering hole. It was more than a tweak funny to me that the bar I was planning on kicking it in was the Get Together. It was an amusing coincidence considering the bullet I was dodging for the day was none other than the local Get Go. The bar had a long, sordid history on Kenilworth Ave. It was opened and closed by the local cops at least twice a year, a ripper bar when I’d begun shooting a stick at the tender age of eighteen. By the ripe age of twenty-four, I’d graduated up to serving beers and waiting tables, and it’d evolved into one of the roughest biker bars in Hamilton. Hells Angels, Red Devils, Outlaws, and the Chinese Tong all left their colours and turf wars outside to discuss business around the marble bar top. Once that was done, they’d slip down to the private “gentlemen’s” room to shake hands over a few rails of the Christmas product they all pumped out on the streets. Walking down the street now, kissing fifty, I found myself running there for shelter. Shelter from the storm . . . Shelter from work, from life, from a man I used to love and a house I used to call home.

So when Angela's brother Albert missed twice in a row, Mrs. Matelli is certain that something bad has happened to her son. Albert, widely believed by the family to be hooked up with the local mob, has always been scrupulous about Sunday dinner and now Mrs. Matelli wants to hire her daughter Angela to look into his disappearance. Against her better judgment, Angela - using her mother's key - breaks into Albert's apartment to find the dinner table set, an open bottle of wine, and a three-day old corpse in other room. The corpse, luckily, isn't Albert but Angela suspects someone is using the body to try and set her brother up. As she digs further into her brother's life she quickly discovers that his boss in the mob claims to nothing about Albert's troubles, the police are after him to explain the corpse in his apartment, and his partners in the Itty-Bitty Kitty toy factory are desperate for his return. Now it's up to Angela to uncover what each of these things has to do with the others - and who is trying so desperately to get to her brother - before it is too late.
Download or read book Jew Be Or Not Jew Be written by Peter J. Oszmann and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2000-12 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jew Be or Not Jew Be is an autobiographical novel, a compelling true story of an assimilated Hungarian middle class Jewish family. It documents aspects of life, escape and survival within the history of the Holocaust. Seen through the eyes of a young child it describes sometimes sad, sometimes poignant events and at other times hilariously comic moments of sheer defiance in the face of adversity. It is a moving testament not only to Man's inhumanity to Man, but also to the human will to survive. Rabbi Julia Neuberger commented in a letter to the author about his book: "I can't believe how long I've had your book-and here is at last my view on it. First, I much enjoyed it, if enjoyed is the right term.-I learned, laughed, and cried."
